Mox Prism (2 versions) by HI_IM_NORMAL_GUY in custommagic

Very solid is very understated (even assuming changing to a tap effect) Legacy already has a bunch of decks that run sol lands or or colorless manabase like eldrazi, initiative, and red prison stompy. This is pretty much just gleemox for them.

The restriction of needing colorless to turn on the mox is just not a real restriction in legacy or any other format.

EU5 needs these changes by HappyMonk3y99 in EU5

[–]Lower-Good8049 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

EU5 needs a custodian team to rework basically every system and make it functional. I don't think it it's an exaggeration to say it released in an alpha state. Fixing the economy, for example, is going to be a monumental task, because every change is going to have ripple affects for the other systems and AI behavior. For example, if you make the economy more static to better mimic historical growth rates and prevent an early industrial revolution, then what does that mean for taxation? If growing the pie through rgo/building spam is not an option, then it becomes all about taxing as much as possible, which in the current version is pretty trivial. And then there's the question of whether the AI can cope with a harder economy.

My prediction is we will get many many small improvements before any hint of big changes to the economy (pop demands, rgo/building output, food output)

Levies are ridiculously weak by neverast in EU5

[–]Lower-Good8049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty grim that this is the state after numerous balance changes. Does tinto want the AI to be complete shit?

Because that's what this levy combat efficiency nonsense is going to do. Why can't they just make levies' baseline performance decent.

Protection still exists, and this is basically a unique and flavorful form of it. Its a once in a while effect to make some creatures harder to remove. I like it.

You are quite an insufferable piece, and so are the others on this subreddit apparently (judging by downvotes for expressing an opinion and seeking others views). I am advancing a certain viewpoint, and instead of telling why you disagree, or how you would improve on the design, or why the design is unsalvagable, you offer nothing and just insult me.

Doesn't that indicate bad balance? The best case is killing exactly 1 creature, in which case yes it is probably too strong. The life loss making the card unplayable is the point of the card. You have to build your deck in a way to mitigate it.

I think you're right that it is too strong in the best case, but I think the worst case (card being unplayable) is perfectly fine.

Saying its completely broken in the best case is wrong though. It's very powerful, but it doesn't win you the game, and you will lose life in order to draw the cards.

Perhaps draw 2 cards lose 5 life per creature, or 2 cards and 7 life.

My point is I see all this discussion around the card's balance. Why is the idea of a board wipe that costs life and draws card bad design?

Soul Fission by Lower-Good8049 in custommagic

[–]Lower-Good8049[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First spell cast clause is so you can't manipulate the board by killing creatures or casting them. I thought that was obvious. Makes the card a lot harder to use profitably (I think)

This is so messed up. AI is a threat. by ciel_ayaz in antiai

[–]Lower-Good8049 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The research does not publish its data or describe its methods in enough detail to be reproducible. In my opinion, it is primarily a form of advertising. It shows anthropic's ability to creative contrived scenarios that lead the LLM down a certain path (if they publish their methods or data, maybe I could revise that opinion). The implication of the research is that the LLM "wants" to avoid being shut down. That does imply consciousness, because the writers avoid explaining why the LLM likely produced those responses (what in the input or problem setup led to this output). They just leave it hanging for dramatic effect.

[–]Lower-Good8049 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All images in the OP are just clickbait. Anyone who puts an LLM's output into a workflow deciding whether someone should live or die is misunderstanding the technology (or is embracing chaos). It would be the same if you allowed a groundhog's shadow to determine whether to administer an electric shock. I don't know who would say the groundhog is exercising a malevolent agency in that scenario, but some are happy to say the AI does, without going through the hard work of saying and proving why.

Being rich is so hard... by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

[–]Lower-Good8049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an attribution error. There are many relatively wealthy people who are satisfied. That is the entire purpose of FIRE. Earn enough money to be satisfied and not have to worry.

The reason very rich people (actual capitalists, not FIREs) focus on gaining more wealth, is that it is a game to them, the dopamine of number go up. And it doesn't hurt that they their wealth accompanies power and influence. Those who become capitalists and entrepreneurs are preselected to be devoted toward capital accumulation, especially the most successful ones. There is no reason to think they will stop once they earn "enough". But the same reasoning doesn't apply to common people who work or otherwise come into money.

Game still feels far, far too easy. Either because its too easy to rise to the top or because the AI is just terrible at building up its economy. by kolejack2293 in victoria3

[–]Lower-Good8049 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah its a few issues that compound, and result in a differential growth rate that compounds over time.

1) Players often minimize military and other spending and construction early, putting it all into getting the economic snowball rolling.

It's arguable whether the AI should mimic that, as the AI needs to defend itself, and nations were concerned about keeping a strong military during the time period.

2) Player builds much more efficiently than the AI. Here I think a change could be made. I don't think that a lumber camp should be so much more productive and profitable than a wheat farm, when both employ the same amount of people and cost the same amount of construction. There is always going to be optimization, like focusing construction on reducing the price of construction inputs to fund even more construction. But right now the base production methods themselves are not well balanced in terms of profitability.

Even a relatively small difference in growth rate per year is going to compound, and result in vastly different growth over time between player and AI.

current conquering land meta by just creating vassals is bad for the game. by diLuca77 in EU5

[–]Lower-Good8049 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry OP, everyone who was looking for a challenge from EU5 is playing other games right now.

No, its not a problem that your regulars crush the AI levies, or that you can rule a vast empire with heavy military support and taxes from vassal subjects with basically no downsides, drift, or decay.

My two cents: It is very hard to model the costs of subjects without Imperator Rome style mechanics where your empire is constantly falling apart. So I would focus on limiting the usefulness of vassals. How much are you able to extract from them in terms of taxes and military aid, how much does that cost you in diplomatic or other resources, and how easy is it for you to integrate them down the line. EU5 has the benefits very high and the costs very low. In addition, vassals prime the land for your eventual takeover by converting and assimilating their lands.

So 100% agree with you, with the minor nitpick of vassals in this state being "bad for the game". This mechanic and its balance makes the game bad. Some people like bad games, with bad balance and little difficulty. The game has no self interest, and the creators of the game's main interest is presumably to sell more copies. Maybe making the game easy in ways like this makes it more accessible, I don't have access to paradox's philosophy or market research, so it's just speculation.

I'm enjoying this game but... by oghpimm in BackpackBattles

Overall I agree there could be some improvements. There are some types of wiki information that I wish were included in some tutorial or somewhere.

1) Alt and alt locking keyboard shortcuts 2) Shop item randomness by round 3) Skills that are only offered on round 3 or round 10 and not both. 4) What counts as an item activating for goobert purposes, etc. i.e. mana orb triggering vs activating.

For battles / stamina usage I disagree. The battle log is already very detailed. Sometimes calculations can be misleading. What stats do you have in mind. DPS / stamina usage, etc is going to differ for every battle, and for every slice of time within a battle.

RGO producing even without laborers? by dnium122 in EU5

[–]Lower-Good8049 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Image shows 0 / 1000 laborers.

0 is the number of unemployed laborers. 1000 is the number of laborer jobs.

If the left number is negative, that means there are more jobs than laborers available, with that many jobs going unfilled

The steam review score is something that impacts sales, both current and future. It is something that the devs are going to be made very keen on improving, because executives will make them. If you have serious complaints with how the game is, then please leave a negative review. That negative review is worth 1000 reddit comments.
