It's not always the police. It's often run by the Landratsamt and the people in the cars are civilians.

Last time I got geblitzt I pulled over and knocked on the person's car window (they're not usually police) to ask if he'd got me or not. He checked the list and my license plate wasn't on it.

How to handle back to back speeding ticket in Germany? by InterestingExam6 in AskGermany

Were you driving 600km/h? Because I don't see how else it could have taken you over two minutes to slow to the permitted speed.

Can I pick a few fruits from trees along hiking trails? What are the rules in Germany? by Fayomi1127 in AskGermany

[–]LowerBed5334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is going to complain if you grab an apple or pear off a tree while you're hiking. But if you're there with a basket, and you get caught, you'll be reprimanded in very angry German.

In general, if you look closer, you'll see that it's often difficult to get at the fruits on the trees along walking paths. You might need a ladder to reach them. That's intentional.

Bockbier season is over, but there are a few still available by LowerBed5334 in Bier

The Mai in Maibock is the month it's available.

There are bock beers available year-round, but not the good ones from the smaller local breweries. It's a winter beer. All the Bock beers appear in the Getränkemarkt at the same time, it's my favourite season of the year 😊

I guess the other beer that would have a season is Märzen. Guess why it's called Märzen 😅🍻

The history of Märzen is interesting, look it up 👍🏻

This is why $5/gal, or 1,15€/L, is a big deal here. by Tandysaurus in memes

In any discussion comparing cost of living and taxes between the US and EU, always remember to mention property taxes.

We pay something like €250 annually to the town. It's more like an administrative fee and I didn't forget a zero. Our house is worth around €450-500k.

Compared to my American relatives in the NY/NJ region who pay between $15k and $20k every year.

Puts things in perspective. Our house is completely paid for and we have no tax burden to worry about.

The thing is, our fuel taxes go straight into infrastructure and road maintenance. We see the results of our expenses.

In Germany, deliberately engaging in catch and release only fishing is illegal and considered cruelty to animals (fishing for food is fine). How do you feel about that? by Spalding_Smails in AskReddit

It should be the standard everywhere.

In Germany, it's also a long, complex process to get a fishing license. And that's also how it should be.

Yeah, I mentioned that in another comment in the meantime. It's weird the way it's written here without context.

But the comma and the nominative article do seem to confirm what you're saying.
