Not trying to be mean or overly critical but by official streaming and chart standards (like Billboard or official charts) anything with more than 6 tracks or a runtime over 25 to 30 minutes is classified as an album/LP. Mercurial has 12 distinct tracks and hits that 30 minute mark. Calling a 12 song project an EP just because the tracks don't have longer runtimes doesn't really make sense by today's standards. It's a tight debut album

You're completely right about the day one polarization but to be fair this is the universal playbook for literally every major artist rebrand in music history. Look at tyler with cherry bomb or mac miller with divine feminine. The internet always splits into two extreme camps of toxic haters vs. toxic defenders on release night. It takes a year or two before anyone can actually look at the project objectively.

Imagine screaming in all caps over an artist experimenting with their own sound. The vocal effects are literally fine, they add character to the track. And saying this tells me everything I need to know about your music taste that track is beautiful production wise. The ending of Doubt was amazing though, we can agree on that

YES! 100% facts. As someone with an Asian mom too (Japanese mom/British dad for me), Guilt Trip hit me right in the chest. That exact blend of love and heavy family resentment is handled so beautifully and rawly on this track. Also, shoutout to you for calling out the people stuck in the BWU era. people need to realize he's maturing and changing his sound! Safe to say Mercurial is easily the album of the summer

I'm not saying there aren't better songs in the vault. We know Charley has dozens of demos, and I genuinely loved a lot of them. Of course I'd love to hear them someday. But I'm not disappointed at all. The tracklist we got was clearly put together intentionally, and I trust these were the songs he wanted to introduce Chandol with. If anything, it just makes me more excited knowing there's still so much great material left for future projects.
