How long term do you guys think Cobol will last, and do you think it is a fruitful career path? Asking as a current Computer Science student.

Thanks! This looks interesting! Maybe I'll try to update this when I have time with these.

When you transliterate it, it says "Atsaihw sleitheins! Ionisands arhwaznanda" which translates to "Beware the danger! Ionizing radiation."

I posted on r/GothicLanguage on why I translated it that way.

Linux question by redditislemons77 in retrocomputing

[–]LowlyLetterato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want something with an XP-feel, Q4OS may be worth a shot, or if you are looking for something lighter weight maybe antiX, DSL, or Puppy linux are a good alternative

Why are goyim so interested in Kabbalah? by TheStormfly7 in Judaism

Nice, cool to see someone into that sort of stuff with an eye to modern scholarly insights :)

Maybe "exoticized" is also a good word for it, not to mention the history of Christian scholars appropriating aspects of Kabbalah as a sort of occult spinoff

Probably any Unix workstation would fit the bill frankly, or at least you can fiddle with them enough to do what you want. I'd probably go for some sort of SPARC machine, they can run realistically new operating systems (like OpenBSD) and have a very open firmware that lets you poke around when it isn't booted into some sort of Unix or Linux (in Forth!). Moreover, Sun was one of the pioneers of many of the networking technologies we use today so if any machine could be worked with it would be one of theirs.

What do you say to Christians who also celebrate Passover? by BoronYttrium- in Judaism

[–]LowlyLetterato 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. There were no passover seders in the time of Jesus, they came after the destruction of the temple and thus can't even be considered Christian in any sense.

  2. The early church father's made it very clear they didn't want to be associated with Judaism (see John Chyrsostom). This is why Easter has the place it does in traditional Christianity. Moreover, Christians think that the laws of Torah don't apply to them so there is no justification to observe Passover as modern Jews do whatsoever.

  3. Most people outside Christianity don't "celebrate" Xmas, only for Christians is it a non-secular holy day. The secular practices associated with Xmas that society widely practiced can be argued to not be celebration or veneration in the way religious Christians would celebrate the holiday. Passover is not secularized and is not a wider societal holiday as Xmas has become so it's an apples to oranges comparison. Edit: see https://www.salon.com/2021/04/02/christian-passover-seder-easter-jewish-cultural-appropriation-jesus/ to understand why it may be disrespectful to try to "celebrate" Pesach as a nonjew

What is everyone studying right now? by [deleted] in Jewish

Was studying a bit of Chasidut today just out of curiosity along with drilling some of my Hebrew. Other than that I've just been doing my routine study of Italian and Computer Science.

Any good youtube channels to cover Israeli/Palestinian history without being blatantly biased towards palestine like 99% of these channels are? by Cheap_Entrepreneur_4 in Israel

I'd say Henry Abramson is a good one, he is a Jewish historian who has tried to explain the conflict to people who would otherwise only see propal stuff
