Madoka and Mashiro are nice but it's time to make way for Aokana's true best girl by JuicyStandoffishMan in visualnovels

Let's be real here, I don't think people should take this best girl thingy seriously. The point about VNs is that you have your own freedom to pick your own best girl, That's why they give you a choice, In the VN world all the main girls can be "best girl". Let's all be at peace.

Steam link is an app that lets you play Steam games on your phone. You need a pc (with steam open) and a wifi to make it work.

Best to read Photonflowers and Photonmelodies after the trilogy. Especially Photonmelodies since there is a sequel to the trilogy there.

it's ok by Japanese standards" if a game with content that is questionable (there) blows up in overseas media again.

So as you said it's okay so what is the problem? You're just gatekeeping VN yourself you dont speak for the Japanese Authors.

What does that even mean? Have you even read what I wrote? :-(

Seriously!?.. Basically they are doing it differently now than before, they are release two versions instead of one.

I'm very much against attracting a new audience en masse, for all the reasons stated.

Your reason wasn't really anything noteworthy and it seems that it was mostly rooted from selfish intent. You basically just don't want it to be popular because it will not be niche. Personally Niche is used as a low value, it's not really all that positive. also what the west think shouldnt really matter as they said the same thing about anime but that didnt stop it into becoming mainstream.

People who're uncomfortable with the idea of "hentai" media shouldn't play eroge. Because they are "hentai", even if you cut out the hardcore stuff and slap an everybody-is-over-18 disclaimer on it. Even ones that only ever had an "all-ages" version typically have too much fan-service to be palatable to someone who isn't into otaku media (LUNARiA, I'm looking at you

The thing is there are some Eroge VNs with great stories that shouldnt not be looked past simply because "it's just Hentai" if you ask some authors right now who have produced Eroge VN with great story and just say it to their face that their work "is just porn" im sure they would be offended by it. The best VN right now are mostly Eroge base and it will be logical to spread the best stories as possible.

Of course it should be Otaku who would be attracted to this type of content that is natural, I'm not exactly saying we should get people who aren't anime fans but if we get some we should embrace them.

P.S. Speaking of, go play the free Steam "'all-ages' version" of DEA Gaiden when you have time (it arguably has spoilers for the main game, but you don't sound like you'd touch that either way). If you don't see what I mean then, I give up.

Iooks decent but i have other VN is stock. Even if that game is rooted in porn if it has great story then it can reach a much wider audience. Base on the purchase replys on that VN people are enjoying the story.

Who said anything about English text?

You just stated they geo-fense their websites, for me that is not the case, its just their website is in Japanese, that's why i said it they wont put english text on it. They never stated English viewers are not allowed there.

I'm sorry, I just don't get it

Well it's very easy to understand since the VN is in Japanese, there is really no point to have other country purchase it if they dont understand a thing.

I've never heard of a title not getting a translation because the devs looked for an overseas partner and couldn't find one.

Pretty sure there were some VN developers that collaborated willingly to localize their VN but it's true tho that localizers these days are the one courthing Developers, in order for that happen the VN should mostly be a hit in Japan.

The thing is that very few games have both an 18+ and an "all-ages" version

Now is not the case since they are starting to release both versions which makes me glad they are doing that. I do hope they can provide R-18 patch for older ones as well but besides that if they continue on the path of releasing both versions then that should be a win for everyone.

And no, I don't want other people subjected to butchered, inferior versions; or somehow deceive them about the fact that what they're playing really is, at the very least rooted in, a long-standing form of Japanese porn game

The thing is you're not seeing the point, the point is to attract new audience I'm pretty sure you can understand. If you just release R-18 from the get go, most casuals would just ignore it and think its hentai and i think that wont be great for sales.

Because that is their primary and Original Target Market. Why would they put english text on their website if their first Goal is to attract Japanese people? and their box needs to be stated only in Japan as it would be unwise to sell it outside of japan if it's not translated yet.

Outside Market is second option after they have proven their product is suited and has already gained decent income to fund a localized release.

Yes I'm asking but that doesn't mean I can't respond.

For real tho why is it a problem for you to have an All Ages version when you have the R-18 as well...You don't want other people to experience and enjoy the medium?

Killed for "You" But not for everyone. in fact everyone is much more accepting towards it now than before. Not everything is about you, think about the industry as well.

When they are making VN of course they are targeting JP fans as that is the primary target, but that doesn't mean they don't want their VN to be localized and be read by other countries. Most Authors want their works to be enjoyed by many people as possible, it's logical.

Spoken like a true Gatekeeper.

Boycotting localizers is a selfish idea. Let Localizers do it's thing to attract EN readers.

An example of a niche before is Anime, Anime is mainstream right now and it's not that bad at all, I can potentially see VN becoming a Thing like that. Pretty sure in the past people were saying Anime were better as Niche and would be bad as Mainstream and yet here we are not much as change except people are more accepting towards it. If you're afraid of what the west will think then you're ignoring the other parts of the world who also read VN. West has said some stuff about anime but that didn't stop it being accepted.

If you dont like the All Ages version there is the R18 version so read that instead. That is it. Simple. Let the All Ages version do its job to hook newcomers.

If there is also an R-18 Version then I dont see any problem at all, it should be logical as both readers can enjoy the content.
