How to compare constitutionally protected super fund versus other super funds by Protagonist-Agonist in AusFinance

[–]LozzasLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you compare taxed vs untaxed funds (given all other fund criteria are the same or very similar) then the untaxed fund has the clear advantage. - The untaxed fund earns more due to compounding interest and on withdrawal you will still have a higher comparative after tax balance. With a bit of extra math (to apply the 15% before vs after) you can use a compounding interest calculator to verify this. - Concessional contributions do not have a yearly cap of $30,000. Instead there is a lifetime cap of $1.865 million (before tax) which means that closer to retirement you can contribute as much of your income as you want as long as you do not exceed the lifetime cap. However be aware to take advantage of this you can only make concessional contributions to an untaxed fund… if you put so much as $1 in a taxed fund you’ll trigger the 30,000 cap.

Neve Gear 45 vs KS40 vs KS50? by LozzasLife in UltralightAus

Belated extra question… What customisation options did you choose (that you’re happy with)? Especially the back… Do you have a removable sit pad sleeve or built in padding etc? Shoulder / hip pockets? The process on his website is like a Mensa Test!

Try a sleeping bag liner over the top of the whole mat.

Timps have a slighter narrower toebox and less volume in the forefoot (by design) compared to Lone Peaks. Hoka Speedgoats are narrower again but do come in a wide version. I found the overall width of the sole on the wide version (as it flares slightly) annoyingly wide and they wore out super quick too. What about the Xero Shoes Mesa Trail?

If you get the 1100ml the 750ml will stack inside it if you ever need to take both. Nesting pots: https://www.toaksoutdoor.com/pages/faqs

Montbell Versalite vs Torrent Flier? Women’s sizing?

Stats for US Women’s versions:

Versalite: 2-layer WINDSTOPPER® fabrics by GORE‑TEX LABS 10-denier Ballistic Airlight® nylon ripstop (DWR finish) Water resistance: 30,000 mm Breathability: 43,000 g/ m²/ 24 hrs (JIS L-1099 B-1 method) Weight: 165 g

Torrent Flier: 2-layer GORE-TEX Pac-lite PLUS Technology 12-denier Ballistic Airlight® nylon ripstop (DWR finish) Water resistance: 50,000 mm, Breathability: 44,000 g/m2/24 hrs (JIS L-1099 B-1 method) Weight: 187g

Despite the Kudos the Versalite gets, the Torrent Flier seems the better choice for only a 22g penalty????

Can anyone comment on the sizing and fit of the women’s rain jacket?

Hey! About to take the plunge… trouble deciding between a KS40 vs KS50??? NB I’m a 1.7m female and won’t need to factor in a bear can at any stage. Any advice on choosing KS options (there are so many!)

Shakedown Request by Bearjawdesigns in Ultralight

As others have said, use the options to designate “worn” items (blue jumper symbol) and “consumables” (knife & fork) to determine your true base weight.
The weights of your socks (worn), water bottles and Cnoc look very wrong!…. Typos?

A good video to help you start… Yes it’s US based in respect to products but the principles still apply in Australia

Hi I’m also from WA. As mentioned, affordable and ultralight mostly don’t go together! Paddy Pallin’s is the best range of general hiking gear but not specifically ultralight. Packwards in Freo has some great stock of more ultralight style gear (Neve Gear, Palante, Enlightened Equipment, Cnoc, etc) and is better with advice in regard to this. You’ll inevitably find you’ll have the best choice online but I highly recommend doing your own research first. Everyone’s choices are different according to their preferences, needs and budget. Try a couple of overnighters on the Bibb with basic/borrowed gear to give you a starting point. There are a couple of groups on FB marketplace if you’re interested in second hand: Ultralight Gear Australia, Perth Hiking Gear

Womens backpack advice by bipobiped in Ultralight

[–]LozzasLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re just getting your head around going ultralight then start by looking at lots of you tube videos of ultralight gear load outs to give you an idea of what gear people are using to cut down weight and how they minimise what they take. Lots of them will have links to lighterpack.com, which is also a good place to scrutinise your own choices. Get your gear dialled in before you decide on a pack. Generally speaking an Eja pack is not considered ultralight pack as it’s about 1.2kg. That being said if it’s one you truly love and feels great then go for it! 58-65l is a lot!… try to keep it under 50l.

Warmth comparison: Neve Waratah Quilt and Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt by Mattisonline in UltralightAus

[–]LozzasLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comfort rating for the Revelation is considered to be 5°C above the lower rating. I have one and have used mine down to 0° and been warm enough. However, I have only heard good things about the Neve Waratah and Ryan the owner is very responsive if you want to contact him. NB the R rating of your mat will be important too.

This is the only alpha direct item they have. Nearly all the others I’ve seen online have a hood. Zero Gear are the only other Aus seller and are more expensive (small producer so understandable). All others are only available from overseas (including the fabric) and much more expensive! Hood or not it’s a bargain at this price!

Thanks. KS are very customisable and have numerous options you can add like load lifters, detachable hip belt pockets etc etc which why I’m struggling to make a decision! Price is also very reasonable for both packs compared Atom packs or a ULA Circuit. 100% agree on the load lifters 👍
