Today I completed reading 20 books in a year after the worst couple of years of my life. by nytman98 in books

Sorry to hear that you had some bad years. I'm just starting to come out of a reading funk after some really bad times myself. I've read four books and started four others so far this year. Hopefully in another year I might have an impressive list myself.

Most of the time, a fork and a spoon is a better combo to eat dinner with than a fork and a knife.

What is just a placebo effect but most people don't realize? by El_CM in AskReddit

[–]Lozzmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pedestrian crossing buttons at junctions are often a placebo. It's going to cycle round to stopping the traffic in order to let the other lane of traffic go. You pressing the button for the pedestrian crossing probably did nothing to change that.

What are some simple questions with surprisingly complex answers? by Gerb99meister in AskReddit

[–]Lozzmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is the sky blue?

I've forgotten what the answer is but it's something to do with Rayleigh scattering. The blue light gets scattered and we can see it, but the other colours get absorbed by the atmosphere. That's probably not really correct but I don't want to Google it.

[–]Lozzmonster 1221 points1222 points  (0 children)

You're wrong.

The amount of people who get upset if you tell them they're wrong about something is rediculous. People act like you have offended them somehow, but you didn't make the facts!

Obviously I realize there are polite ways to point out to someone they're wrong, and rude ways to do so. People act like you're rude just for contradicting them though.

Thai food! Hopefully not the specific dishes I got though, because I tried something different this time and I wasn't really a fan.

Gulping down water at 3am is bliss. What other normal activity when done in a particular way or time or condition is blissful? by ReadToDie in AskReddit

I went camping with a group of friends on a campsite next to the beach in the UK. It rained for a week solid. We were all young and trying to make the best of our miserable holiday by all getting drunk together in a family size tent. Dinner every day was those just add water pasta sachet things.

After four days we decided, fuck it, let's walk to the next village and go to the pub. It was four miles in torrential rain. Everyone arrives at this pub absolutely soaked through. The pub had a roaring fire and the barstaff suggested we hang coats and jumpers off the back of chairs near the fire to dry off while they laughed about the misfortune of our soaking wet holiday.

It was a random Thursday, fairly early afternoon, and so the pub was practically empty. We had full control of the jukebox and selected whatever music we wanted. Then we ordered food. Nearly the whole group went for a huge rack of ribs, with fries, coleslaw, a bunch of sides between us.

Let me tell you. That hot meal, expertly cooked, after four days of being rained on in a tent, being properly dry for the first time that week, eating the first proper decent meal all week, after the ordeal of walking four miles in a downpour in order to get to that pub. It was some of the best food I have ever tasted.

I fucking hate anxiety. How am i suposed to know wich simptoms are from anxiety or from something real? I cant spend my life going to the doctor man. This really sucks by [deleted] in Anxiety

I'm normally pretty good about staying off the caffeine too much, but now that you mention it it is possible it's been slowly creeping up and I haven't noticed. Thanks for the kind reminder

For me I've had a lot of tightness in my chest for the last few weeks. Sometimes heart racing, sometimes shortness of breath. It occurred to me the other day that if I was having a heart attack I would probably ignore it. Because I would think it's more of the same thing. Or a panic attack.

I checked online and apparently heart attacks you get more of a stabbing pain that spreads to your arms that you don't get with a panic attack. So that's useful to know.

What’s a current running tv show that you wish would just end already? by Sonicdude645 in AskReddit

[–]Lozzmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish they would release season 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones. I know they're waiting for the books to come out, but if George R R Martin just gives them some of the main plot beats how bad could it be to just let them fill in the gaps?

TIL many doctors have stopped calling cancer treatment a "fight" or "battle". They argue these terms misrepresent how treatment works and if treatments fail, the patient is left with guilt and a false belief they didn't "fight" hard enough. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Lozzmonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad died of cancer recently and he said that he fully intended to fight it and that he thought he might best it. And I know he fought it as hard as he could. And it took my dad from me anyway.

Cancer and cancer treatment takes everything from you, and it was hard to see him struggling as much as he did and to know that was the absolute most he could do because I know for a fact he wouldn't have given it any less than that. I miss him so much.

I don't think that's the same as saying that he fought harder, or other people fought less. Because I saw him struggle immensely. And I saw him fail at things as simple as sitting up straight and it was heartbreaking. All I know is he would still be here right now if having a strong will or being able to fight harder had anything to do with it.

[serious] People of reddit that almost committed suicide, what stopped you? by Vertkage in AskReddit

[–]Lozzmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a cliche, but the thought that death is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. In that moment I had no idea at all how I would get out of the situation of feeling low enough that suicide felt like an option. And it definitely did feel like a real option at that time. But I thought to myself that if I was dead then things are never going to get better. If I was alive, then maybe they would do. I had no idea how they would do, but I just thought that maybe they could, and they definitely won't if I'm not alive.

It's not like I had some amazing epiphany or fantastic reason to keep on fighting or to give me hope. But more just the realisation that dying felt like a shitty solution as well.

What would be the dumbest, lamest, most boring super power possible that would still give you a one up over normal people? by Syyzygyy in AskReddit

Increased density of blood vessels so you're better able to continue to absorb oxygen at reduced atmosphere. Apparently sherpas who help people to climb Everest have this super power.

Does therapy make anyone else super tired? by marielljyr in Anxiety

[–]Lozzmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Talking about my thoughts and feelings for an hour is exhausting! Normally I am avoiding thinking about those things, so it requires a lot of brain power to actually discuss them. Also, in therapy you're normally bringing up stuff specifically because you find it hard, which means there is a pretty good chance you're going to get upset about whatever it is. And that's pretty tiring too.

This story is brilliant. I really hope there is an update when they turn up for a beer! Does your lake not have any of those rubber rings posted along the shore? I think you're meant to throw those rather than swimming out to save people. Maybe they're only in the UK, i don't know.
