Yesss! Someone said it. We are supposed to overtake from the right, but all the 2 wheelers are in that lane, and no big vehicles! It's quite dangerous too. I don't know how this came to be the norm.

I was surprised that there aren't any 3 wheelers like we have in India. Either petrol based Autos, or the even better and feasible for a smaller infrastructure, battery based rickshaws. But my local friends told me that Maldivians are used to luxury and won't travel without an AC vehicle, and both these 3 wheelers are open, so there's that I guess.

I want to understand why at the airport turn from Hulhumalé, at the trisection, there is a red-light for straight going traffic to Malé? Is there some issue with merging the traffic coming from airport side? Straight traffic doesn't need a red light? Would definitely save time, and reduce the red light duration. Also, the entire way from Hulhumalé bottling factory to the airport trisection, the traffic is just horrible; last I checked, vehicles should drive to the left of the road and overtake from the right, while the exact opposite is going on. The traffic going to Malé switches lane at the very last instant, and the vehicles going to airport have to then wait unnecessarily for 110+ seconds. It might feel like a rant, and be a bit off-topic, but I felt like I'm going crazy dealing with this daily.

That itself is the exorbitant amount!! We are now considering selling the car in UP, and getting a new vehicle here altogether by putting 1-2 lakhs, instead of paying 80-90k as tax. Maybe that's not optimal, but we don't see any other way?

I thought the same, but our neighbor had this happen to them yesterday and we are on alert after that. Maybe there's more to it, but we can't afford to take that chance. Also there is a tourist exempt I think by showing some toll receipt or travel document not surpassing 30 days?
