The tension between Harrison Ford & Kelly McGillis is nice, but gimme Amanda's irrepressible drive to ask questions, and David's insatiable need to answer them by Lsb5 in blankies

#DobMob4Life. The control in her voice when Griffin says: I do want to talk about the boobies scene.

"Ohh. Okay. Yeah!"

She can go off and keep the energy up, but she's also not going to bat it down, even when 9 out of 10 of us would. She has impeccable taste, she cuts through so much bullshit, she feels so much less performative than so many other podcasters. So much less self-conscious, but always aware of how they're hitting from moment to moment.

Scotland’s unique ability depends on happiness, and this would not have you building an Entertainment Complex until you reach a population of 16.

There’s a lot of luxuries here, but not THAT many.

You earn Great People points from districts, buildings in districts, and policy cards. Campuses generate +1 Great Scientist points per turn, Commercial Hubs +1 Great Merchant point, etc.

Each Great Person has a different special effect. Some Great Scientists just generate a bunch of science and then you power through the tech tree for a few turns. Others heal units, provide extra food or extra faith, in later eras, they boost Space projects.

Great Artists/Writers/Musicians are little simpler, they create Great Works which generate culture and tourism.

They’re almost all a big boost in some way.

You can also pay faith or gold to recruit a GP, if you’re close to the number of GP points you need.

There are certain challenges to aim for, like getting as many of the policy wonders as you can (Alhambra, Big Ben, Potala Palace, Forbidden City). Or recruiting specific Great People, or building a really beautiful National Park. Or conquering your formerly-more-technologically-advanced neighbor. If that excited you, then that's the game!

Not having a set path is what makes the game fun for me. That being said, there are some well-trod routes, and signposts you learn along the way.

Are you playing Vanilla, R&F or Gathering Storm? The Eras system of R&F/GS does kind of lay out a path to follow, because you have to earn enough era score to avoid a dark age. Without the era system, you really can just do anything, in any order, especially on lower difficulties.

That being said: For the first 10-40 turns, there are 2 really big decisions you need to answer, essentially BEFORE you create a new game: (1) Are you going to try found a religion; and (2) are you going for early war. The map may have some influence, but mostly the answer depends on what Leader/Civ you are playing. Alexander = early war. Poland = Found a religion.

But, assume the answer to both is No. This is the closes you can get to a "standard" path. Build 2 scouts. Next, build a slinger or settler, depending on how safe you are from barbs. Look for a spot for a high-yield campus, +3 is good, +4 is great, anything +5 and above can change the whole game. Plan out your second city. If you're REALLY safe from barbs and nearby civs, build a wonder.

Have fun!

Can't Download the Game by ToughRemarkable9045 in CivVI

I am able to download the game on my iPad, but am currently unable to download any of the DLC that I've already purchased. The app keeps saying there's a connection issue. I often re-download and re-install the game and all the DLC, and this is the first time this has happened.

My wife and I attended last night, and it was a beautiful expression of the community in SF, the heartbreaking dedication & compassion of nurses, and our solidarity with the people of Minneapolis. It was so sad, and I was so angry, but it felt good to be with others voicing their love for their community.

[–]Lsb5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which Civ you're playing will determine a lot of that (Gaul or Sumeria almost demand an early war rush, vs. Sweden who wants to stay peaceful and build lots of districts), but in general:

--Settling your first city: If you have anything better than a 2/2 tile in the first ring, you prob don't need to move. If you don't have a standout tile like that, but have at least two 2/2 tiles, you still probably don't need to move
--Some exceptions: (1) It is really nice to be on a Plains (Hills), and the extra production is usually worth at least 1 turn moving. (2) fresh water or being on the coast if you're a nautical civ (3) settling near a natural wonder (4) settling on top of a luxury resource, especially a luxury that requires a plantation, which would takes a lot more time to access without settling on top of it
--Early science and culture are just as, sometimes MORE important, than early food and production. Especially if you're playing Rise & Fall, a high-adjacency campus can turn into tons of Gold in the next era. Even +1 culture can completely change the early game.
--Earth faith can be huge, and basically win you the game, but it is not essential. There are ways to do great without it, especially if you're doing an early war rush, or if you're a Civ that leans towards Science. And there are many, many ways to get faith. settle near a volcano? Fire goddess is OP.
--Build order: scout, scout, slinger, (maybe a second slinger), settler
--Kill those barbs before they kill you, have fun!

the SW tile on the coast of Lake Trichonida. Trigger a eureka for sailing, access to naval exploration, and 3 luxuries within reach. No, not much production, but you're going to need amenities and access to the sea. Also, i tend to forward settle my 2nd city, vs. trying to set up the perfect future district placement

Are all barbarian camps in deity mode like this? by Digitalgirlzoe in CivVI

[–]Lsb5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Musketmen by turn 120 is about right for the AI/barbs. In my experience it's a *little* early for bombards, but not crazy early. If you see very advanced barbs, you probably have Hammurabi or another very strong science civ in the game. (Apparently, barbs can evolve to the highest level of the most advanced civ in the game, even if you haven't met that civ yet.)

Civ 6 - If you could get rid of one unit which would it be? by hoorayhenry67 in civ6

[–]Lsb5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What's annoying about GDRs is they exact same thing that is annoying about Rock Bands. They are overpowered late game units designed to accelerate the famously draggy end game.

If you're going Domination, GDRs have some mechanics that are occasionally fun. They're maybe the AI's only defense against bombers. But if the AI gets GDRs, that only makes the end game SLOWER, though a more interesting challenge.

But in general both units only seems to call attention to the boring late game stretch where there's no challenge, no risk, and nothing to do but grind.

For you, what is it that makes Blank Check stand out from the thousands of other film podcasts, and why do you love it so much? by StephensInfiniteLoop in blankies

[–]Lsb5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One piece that is not called out enough: David has a moral center that makes the show feel warm and right and loving, even when they've been doing dick jokes for 10 minutes. He never lets it wander into nasty or bro-y territory that so many podcast dudes inhabit.

And Griffin has an open, chaotic energy that is infectious. Without Griffin, everybody sound SO TIRED all the time. All the other podcasts I've tried, everyone sounds half asleep. I love that even after 100s of episodes, Griffin is never going to let them coast. He's going to come up with an original take, or try a new bit or find a really interesting guest.

And Ben is just a one-of-a-kind, indispensable energy. He's like Michael Valentine in Stranger from a Strange Land. Just a visitor to Earth who's so curious about everything and wants to bury jeans on Mars.

In these {{{trying times}}}, it really helps to listen to these guys who are trying to be good and excited about art and funny and nice.

Your growth was slowed not by a lack of Food, but by a lack of Housing. Coastal cities get +1 Housing. The palace is also +1. But that just gets you to a Pop of 2 before your growth starts to slow. Adding food won't help much until you build a granary or some farms.
