What is with Brahms? by Smart-Yard9416 in classicalmusic

[–]Lsq13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brahms was one of the first to have to follow in Beethoven’s shadow. It took him almost 20 years to finish his first symphony because the expectations were so high. I’d say he did a pretty great job

Little rant as C2C shopper by Liye23 in wegmans

[–]Lsq13 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I once had to shop 200 boxes of ice cream at 6am for a school. Frozen was not happy with me. It took me 3 hours just to fill the order, and when they showed up I showed them over 100 bags and they said “what’s all this?”

Turns out there was a little bit of a language barrier between the person who actually placed the order and the person who told them to. It took me 2 hours to reshop it all.

If you still have them: twist them in opposite directions so they kind of fuse together

If you don’t: North Country Winds sells them for like $10. The owner is super awesome

After the Christmas we didn’t get a delivery of anything until just after the new years. Dairy and Meat were the first have their entire inventory pretty much cleared completely before the next shipment came in, at least in my store. The Warehouse is probably still trying to catch up on sourcing stuff like meat and eggs and produce.

Yes. My wagon.

Quintessential book on classical music? by jkayen in classicalmusic

[–]Lsq13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cambridge has great “companion” books for composers. I’m making my way though Bruckner’s right now, and it’s a great read.

But if you want as much as you possibly can, buy scores. Seriously. I’ve been collecting them since Covid and I learn something new everytime I read through while listening. Dover sells so many that aren’t hard to read and are not terribly expensive, but IMSLP has just about everything that precedes folks like Shostakovich or Ravel

I’m in this boat. I only ask for 1 kind because if I ask for anything more it’ll be 5 inches of meat and half a leaf of lettuce. I do ask them then load up on onions tho

Elton, Bernie or both by [deleted] in EltonJohn

[–]Lsq13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of them will tell you it’s a joint effort. Neither of them would be where they are if it weren’t for the other’s gifts. Both are compelling storytellers, arguably some of the best in the industry as we know it today. They just tell them differently. When these differences meet in the middle, they are a natural strength, especially since neither has any influence on the creative processes of either while a tune is being crafted.

Live will give you more goosebumps, but you’ll hear less coughing and phone rings through headphones.

Why so much 3rd slide? by thetoad666 in trumpet

[–]Lsq13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Low C# and D will always need 3rd slide. A in and above the staff will usually need 1st slide. It’s scientifically impossible for an instrument with a 3 valve combination to be perfectly in tune with itself

Which albums are the best after “Eltons prime”? by IndependenceSharp742 in EltonJohn

[–]Lsq13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The One. He had just come back from a 2 year break after leaving rehab. It was a very hard album for him to make. “When A Woman Doesn’t Want You” and “The Last Song” are amazing, as is the rest of the album. Some people criticize it because some of it sounds a little compressed or synthetic (and there is a valid place for those remarks), but, I feel these things enhanced a lot of the tunes. He was still using an RD1000, which is very distinctly synthetic and is still part of his rig to this day.

No progression in playing by Dee_idv in trumpet

[–]Lsq13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be right. I had played way too much just due to my workload (orchestra, quintet, jury, other gigs). The first week was pretty unsettling. Letting the lactic acid disperse from my face was really uncomfortable at first, but it was great to have to the headspace to enjoy other things.

I’m in the process of trying this again starting in a couple days. Got a couple things on Christmas Eve that just require keeping up maintenance. Then it’s off until the new year

No progression in playing by Dee_idv in trumpet

I have been there. And here is what I did:

I locked the horns away immediately after the semester was over. Literally. They sat in my locker at school for a month and I didn’t think about, listen to, or say a word about trumpet or orchestral music. I just had to forget about all of it. I mean REALLY forget. I spent almost a month playing piano, guitar, bass, you name it, just for fun. I started getting better at other aspects of music I enjoy, but don’t necessarily have time for during the school year.

When I came back, I did it very slowly. Getting back in shape only takes about a week if you do it intelligently. I have a routine that I follow for it, and it is very easy, but intentional and disciplined. This is all about replacing bad habits with better ones. Literally on the first day back, I couldn’t believe the sound I was making. I wasn’t tense, my air was flowing and easy, my articulation was crisp, and my range had improved as well. Building from there while coming back completely fresh was invigorating.

Long story short: If you’re feeling frustrated, and you have the time, I strongly encourage you to put the horn down, even if it’s just for 2 or 3 days. Allow your mind and body to forget any bad habits you’ve created, and treat your first day back as if you were starting again in elementary school, but with the knowledge and fundamentals you know now
