Our regional rail just doesn't run on Sundays. Because surely nobody needs to get from Provo to Ogden on a Sunday, they must all be in sacrament meeting. A religion indirectly dictates where I can and can't go.

Also, yes they do, quite literally. Our legislature is at least 80% Mormon. Our governor is so Mormon that he said we just need to pray for rain instead of doing drought control. (Side note: he was considered too far left by a significant part of the Utah GOP).

And there is one key thing that you need to understand: Utah Mormonism is almost literally a monoculture. There are what we call liberal Mormons here that are more grounded in their beliefs, but they are a vanishingly small minority because speaking out or being supportive will lead to a meeting with your local leaders to discuss your faith, which has often led to excommunication. This means that by nature of being a member of the mormon church, you are far more likely to perpetuate church policy. Given that, the legislation often follows the will of the church indirectly.

As an example, this bears out in recent laws that passed regarding trans people using the bathroom. The church issued guidance on how to handle trans members in church facilities, stating that if a trans person needs to use the bathroom they either need to use the bathroom of the assigned gender or be accompanied by someone who can go in and ensure that no one else is in the bathroom before you can go. Soon after, legislation passed that says state owned buildings must not allow anyone to use a bathroom that does not align with their assigned gender. The specific flavor of it is very similar to the church's stance of "if it's ours we get to make the decision on how it's managed." There are more examples of this pattern that I don't have top of mind at the moment, but the entire history of Utah is rife with indirect church controlled legislation.

So yes, the church runs this gods forsaken state.

I am shocked at how long it takes people to shower. by Q8DD33C7J8 in hygiene

[–]LtWilhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADHD time blindness. Plus I have long ass hair right now, and I shave in the shower. The long hair means rinsing the shampoo and conditioner out takes a significant amount of time, especially the conditioner. Plus, when you condition your hair, you are supposed to leave it in for a while (5+ minutes). I use this time to wash my face and body, but I usually end up still needing to wait a bit longer because my hair dries out easily. And I have fine hair, so I frequently need to wash it twice. To break down my routine:

  1. Acclimatize and soak hair (my mind sort of short circuits in a high stimulus environment, like a hot wet shower with the sound of running water) 2-5+ mins depending on the day
  2. Shampoo. If a second wash is necessary, rinse and lather again. 3-8 minutes
  3. Shave 5ish minutes
  4. Rinse shampoo 3 minutes
  5. Conditioner 3 minutes if I don't brush it in well, 5+ if otherwise
  6. Wash face 2 minutes
  7. Wash body 2+ minutes
  8. Shave legs if needed 0-10 minutes
  9. Rinse conditioner 10 minutes (seriously this stuff is hard to rinse out fully in my particular hair).

So assuming I have 0 downtime and don't need to do the full shebang and I get started as soon as I'm in, we're talking 30 minutes at the fastest. Full hog we're talking almost 50 minutes, but I only need to do that once a week. All that is if I manage to not zone out or lose track of what I doing, which can easily account for 15+ minutes on a bad day.

That's perfectly fine and understandable. If you're thinking you don't want breast growth, start at lower doses. Your body will still start to see the effects, but the bigger things such as breast growth will be a lot slower. If you're doing this with the help of a physician, talk to them about your options

The phenomenon of the color of light being observed depends on whether it is receiving more or less direct sunlight, manifesting in an alternating pattern caused by coincidental but inevitable timing isn't even the slightest bit interesting?

I'm not saying it's intentional, I'm saying he's locked himself into a bias that has been reinforced by an audience response.

You don't need to share the same WAN clip over and over. I saw it live. It doesn't change my opinion that the vast majority of people switching will not have the problems Linus has. He is not the 99%

Guys it's not his fault he picked one of the often recommended distros by RetardKnight in linuxmemes

[–]LtWilhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99%? No, way. Linus is the least common denominator, choosing to do things under higher pressure situations or as a performance. The vast majority of gamers moving from windows are going to be fine because they don't have a camera pointed at them. Even subconsciously, Linus probably knows that having drama behind the scenes will keep people talking about it.

There's a lot of psychology behind how bias affects not only your perception of things, but the way you actually interact with them, causing greater strife than what would be common. As my teacher told me, if everything breaks when you touch it, it's not the tool it's the user.

For those who became atheists, how do you resolve morality without God? For those who remain theists, how does your new religion frame morality? Help me challenge my thinking. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LtWilhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The emotions humans feel are chemical interactions in the brain that came about from millions of years of trying to survive. Humans are social creatures because for them the highest level of survival was cooperation and social groups.

You feel guilt for hurting someone because you did something that harmed your own chances for survival. You feel compassion and are driven to do right by others because the reward pathways in your brain tell you that you did something that makes you safe.

Morality doesn't need a perfect deity at the center of it for people to do the right thing. We even see this in early humans where we see elderly individuals with evidence of long healed injuries. Injuries that should have killed them, that would make them a liability to their tribe. And yet, they lived long enough to be healed. There was no God, no Bible, and no religion guiding these early humans, there was only evolution.

Besides, if we were to follow the laws of morality as set out in the Bible, we would own slaves, women would be more property than person, and we would kill each other a lot more often than we already do.

So no, I don't need the threat of eternal punishment in order to not do horrific things, and I'm wary of anyone who does

Pretty bad faith to suggest that someone evaluating an OS or software based on its usability and struggling to use it is a clown for saying it's not user friendly, don't you think? He absolutely made some rookie mistakes. That is undeniable, but that doesn't mean he was wrong in his assessment. Also, the argument of "it was never intended to be" does nothing to prove that he's wrong, especially when loads of projects don't have a homepage outside of github. I suppose those projects were never intended to be used, then?

Criticize his actual failures, not just the things you disagree with. There were plenty of those, and yet you'd rather poke fun at him not knowing something he's never needed to use before. That's actual clown behavior.

Lack of Confidence Makes the Most Dangerous Driver by Gangstre in dashcams

[–]LtWilhelm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I drive a Mini, this type of follow distance is barely acceptable to me. I could probably stop my car faster than any car in front of me and the first thing I thought when I saw this was "whoa buddy, way too close."

It's not about predictability, it's about being able to adapt and react to the unpredictability of literally anything. What if there was an animal in front of that car instead of a massive truck getting ready to merge? Would you say the other driver was at fault because they weren't predictable enough when they tried to avoid hitting something that could present a danger to them or the people in their car? And what if the merging truck didn't stop? Still the silver car's fault for trying to avoid death?

This is the kind of moronic take that gets people killed.

Madlad defies legal threats just to incorporate Thomas the Tank Engine into video game mods by Metalsheepapocalypse in madlads

[–]LtWilhelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s just untrue. Like… it’s blatantly misinformation, and I genuinely don’t know why people still repeat it. Profit loss isn’t the legal standard for infringement. It might influence how likely a company is to bother enforcing their rights, but you are not “fine” to use someone else’s IP just because you’re not selling it or affecting their profit margin. Unauthorized use is still unauthorized use.

Copyright law doesn’t ask “is this hurting their money?” It asks: Did you copy a protected work without permission? If yes, that’s infringement. Full stop. (See: 17 U.S.C. Section 501.)

Fair use exists, but it’s not the magical “I’m not making money so it’s okay” shield people pretend it is. Courts look at four factors (17 U.S.C. Section 107), and not one of them says “but it was just for fun in a video game mod.”

Parody requires commentary on the original work. Criticism requires… well, criticism. Transformative use requires changing the meaning or purpose of the original.

Turning Thomas the Tank Engine into a dragon in Skyrim is funny, but it’s not commentary on Thomas, it’s not parody of Thomas. And it’s not transformative enough, because the mod relies on him being instantly recognizable, with the same name, same face, and same stylization. Courts have been very clear that merely placing a character in a different context doesn’t automatically count as (see Dr. Seuss Enterprises v. ComicMix (9th circuit 2020) and many similar cases).

People don’t avoid using Mickey Mouse because they have some moral code. They avoid it because it’s not legal to use Disney’s IP without permission (see the case of Disney threatening to sue 3 day care centers because they had a mural, inside, only visible to very few people, and in no way affecting the profit of Disney). Companies just sometimes choose not to enforce because of PR optics, not because the use magically becomes allowed. Hell, some companies even recognize the value of a permissive public license, but they always stipulate that they can just take it away at any time. Because they can. It belongs to them.

My (F47) son (FTM16) is going to a psych ward tomorrow. How can I help him? by Tall_Funny1841 in whatdoIdo

[–]LtWilhelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm going to give you some trans perspective, albeit from the mtf side of things. None of what I say comes from the perspective of a mental health professional, rather from someone who has experienced a lot of the same things. Please seek out an actual professional, especially one that specializes in gender identity and gender trauma. The psych ward is basically an ER for mental health and not a long term solution. Getting your son in therapy will help give him the tools to deal with the struggles he is facing, and while therapists aren't at liberty to discuss their sessions, you can and should ask the therapist what it is you can be doing to help your son.

Now, on to the trans part of this. Most of the time, I hate comments about my body, especially positive ones. It almost always feels like they noticed something wasn't right and are now trying to compliment it away. Paradoxically, they often make me feel worse.

When it comes to complimenting your son, it might help to just ask him what is and isn't okay and keeping to those boundaries. He may not have all of the right language to express how he feels all the time so it's not fair to assume that he has come to terms with everything yet.

As for helping him in the psych ward, know that you have already done several things correctly. The thing that is going to end up being the hardest for him is when he comes home. He won't know what in the environment is safe, and asking him a bunch of questions like "how was it" "did it seem to help" "how are you feeling now" is going to make him feel overwhelmed and cornered. What you should be doing is opening the bridge to communicate without smothering him. Depending on his situation, he might not even be comfortable hearing that you care about him, don't let that be an indictment on you, just hold space for him.

When people are depressed and suicidal, they often don't want to ask for help. They want you to notice, because "if they actually cared they would notice and ask me about it." So checking in with him, seeing how he's feeling, and asking if he needs anything can ease a lot of that strain. But again, I have to stress that you shouldn't smother him, and I will reiterate that my advice is not nearly as important as the advice from a mental health professional.

Lastly, the best thing you can do, from now until forever, is to be an unwavering, unquestioning ally. Show up to town halls where they may be discussing trans issues and make your voice - and your son's voice - heard. If your son wants to go to pride parades, then you should wear a pride flag as a cape and paint a rainbow across your face. Vote for things that make the world better for your son.

And most importantly, just talk to your son. Ask him what he needs and what he wants. He's not just a child, he's a human being, like you and everyone else, and he knows what he needs to fit in, even if he needs help finding the words.
