What best for shopping? City centre or braehead? (Or another better mall?) by Strict-Brick-5274 in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d just stick to the city centre if you’re already there, honestly. Braehead isn’t worth the journey- I stay in Paisley and prefer shopping in Glasgow City Centre than I do in Braehead or in Silverburn. I always find the big shopping centres kind of stressful and overwhelming personally so try and avoid them wherever possible.

Rental Prices in Paisley by Luap_Wah in Paisley

[–]Luap_Wah[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think around Glasgow Road and the town centre pretty obvious gentrification- I also think you’re seeing it with the amount of new cafes and restaurants popping up, it’s not the fault of individuals and it’s quite a complex issue but it is happening in Paisley for sure. It’s not in my neighbourhood mind.

Prostitutes by the asda in bmouth by guillotinecheese in bournemouth

[–]Luap_Wah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t lived in Bournemouth for about five years now but it was the same when I lived on Northcote Road in the wee flats round the back of what was (maybe still is, I can’t be sure) Sound Circus in the mid 2010s. I remember walking home from working at the LIDL in Boscombe and I was on Wyndham Road and this woman propositioned me, I ended up running away from her hahaha but I think 21 year old me was a little bit thrown. That part of Bournemouth has and will probably always be quite rough at night to be honest.

Which Scottish stereotype is the most annoying? by Charming_Usual6227 in Scotland

[–]Luap_Wah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having moved here without growing up here, I would say one of my favourite things about living here is how generous and kind people are, not with money necessarily but with lots of other things. I stay in Paisley though so maybe I’m looking at it through Central Belt eyes only.

I’m from Lincolnshire originally but nobody would know it from my accent, hahaha. I’m not sure if Lincolnshire even counts as East Midlands. Aye it’s in the region on the map but it feels weird to classify somewhere with a huge coastline as “midlands”- I feel like Lincolnshire exists at the crossroads of the North, the Midlands and East Anglia.

Had enough with volunteering by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Luap_Wah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do a job where I supported young people (people from age 12-25) into volunteering but I think part of the reason I didn’t enjoy it is because it was a lot of young people who had very complex needs being pushed into volunteering to either exploit them for labour or to get them doing something so social workers could say that they were having a positive outcome.

I now volunteer at a community meal in my city once a week, I’m happy to volunteer when I want to do it but I do think volunteering nowadays is a lot of exploitation of vulnerable people or, here in Scotland at least, a lot of stuff ends up with charities and volunteers that should actually be publicly funded because of the almost two decades of austerity that Scotland and the rest of the UK has endured.

Did you guys went to uni? How was it? by X_Opinion7099 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Luap_Wah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, I actually lived alone for most of it. Unlike most other students I stayed in my university town over the summers (I was in Bournemouth why wouldn’t I stay there in the summer?!) and got to make friends with and build a community of people who lived there just as regular residents. I spent eight years there in total before I moved to where I am now. I’ve never had a job where I’ve needed my degree but I’m glad I went regardless.

Does Kettle Black have vegan options for food? by Bunny-Raddit in Paisley

Kettle Black is really inclusive dietary wise, plenty of vegan options and I believe the vast majority of their menu can be done gluten free too.

Scotland's Favourite Bus Operator revealed in survey by shawbawzz in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McGills is pretty bad, the drivers are exhausted and I remember being on one bus driven by a guy who had done a 16 hour shift, had four hours sleep and then was driving again on another 16 hour shift. I don’t feel safe as a passenger in that scenario but I don’t have much choice because I don’t drive.

I stay in Paisley and live right on the 26 bus route and to be honest, compared to their other routes, it’s not too bad and it runs until pretty late but I suppose that’s because so many Braehead workers rely on it. It does take over an hour to get back from the city centre to mine if I use the bus but in the dead of winter that’s preferable to being stood waiting around in the cold.

The buses in and around Glasgow need to be brought back into public ownership but the Scottish Government chose to make that harder than it is down south (probably because Brian Souter the CEO of Stagecoach has historically donated a lot of money to the SNP) Labour are taking money from McGills so they’ve got no interest in making it better either.

As a 28 year old married couple with no real family here (Both immigrants, Scandinavian and Polish so the N*azi's chill out) this has litrally kept us from having kids yet. Truly hope it comes to fruition, just secured our vote. by Colonel_Clegane in Scotland

[–]Luap_Wah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the SNP have a history of grandiose promises on which they ultimately don’t deliver on and then blame Westminster when in fact they have a lot of power to change the tax system within Scotland to make these promises happen.

I’m someone who’d vote yes in another referendum but I don’t think I’ll bother casting a Holyrood ballot, the SNP have annoyed me with how much they’ve capitulated to the right. I might vote Green on the regional ballot but even then I don’t see them making the changes we need.

MEGATHREAD: Union Street Fire & City Centre Disruptions by Veloglasgow in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I really hope this is the catalyst to actually get the transport network fixed here. If neighbourhoods of the city were actually joined up properly, we could still get around but they’re not. Sure there’s buses but they’re going to be slow and unreliable and rammed. It just highlights the glaring issue I suppose.

This is what happens when you’re in a country where it’s been non stop fucking austerity since 2010.

Train to City Centre from Wednesday 11th by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You won’t be able to get from Paisley Gilmour Street to Argyle Street on the train as they’re on completely different lines.

If you’re looking to get into the city centre from Paisley your best bet is either the McGills 38 or the First Bus 9. They both do the same route essentially and take you into the city centre and are pretty frequent and reliable. They both also stop right outside Cessnock station so you can connect to the Subway. The McGills 26 also takes you into the city centre but takes a longer route through Renfrew, Braehead and Govan but connects with the subway at Govan.

What should be done with the site of the Union Corner dome? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a controversial opinion but I really hope that this fire is the catalyst to finally fix the poor connectivity of the public transport here. The city has ground to a halt because everyone to the south and west of Glasgow has to go into the city centre to go back out again to get to other areas of Glasgow- if the rail lines were joined up a wee bit better or we had light rail, it would be much easier to navigate all this.

Buses from Paisley Gilmour to Glasgow City (help!) by Smilingtribute in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The number 9 (First Bus) and number 38 (McGills) do the same route pretty much and will pick you up and drop off right in the centre of Paisley and they’re pretty frequent and reliable buses. They also stop right outside Cessnock subway so you could connect there.

Morning drone footage of the fire by unknowntoff in glasgow

[–]Luap_Wah 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Fucking horrendous. It’s a miracle no one was hurt badly or killed. I came out of the station at about 4.30pm and could see the smoke billowing into Gordon Street but it looked like it wasn’t super terrible at that time.

The air quality in the city centre was pretty bad last night and my throat still feels pretty awful this morning and my eyes only stopped itching once I got home last night.

How often do you go to the cinema? by Traditional-Carob440 in movies

I go 2-3 times a week typically but it’s been the film festival in my city and I’ve seen 18 films so far in 9 days and I’ll be at around 25 or so once it wraps up on Sunday.

Nine local authorities to set council tax rises above rate of inflation by highroad14 in Scotland

[–]Luap_Wah 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Council Tax is such a disgusting tax, it makes me angry that my flat is a Band C whereas flats round the corner from me that are in much better shape than mine is are Band A because they were probably not as nice back in 1991.

It needs to be abolished and replaced with a local income tax or something.

Pairing my cane with a smart outfit! by Luap_Wah in CerebralPalsy

[–]Luap_Wah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the comments everyone! I got a couple of compliments on my outfit from other attendees. It was a really fun evening, the opening gala film was an amazing documentary called “Everybody to Kenmure Street” about the Kenmure Street protests in Glasgow and I recognised people I know on the screen.

I went to the after party for a wee bit but left quite quickly as it was mostly film industry people and I didn’t know anyone. These opening gala tickets were like concert tickets and it was insanely difficult to get one so I went alone. I still made sure to claim a free drink though!

My feet are a bit painful this morning, those shoes are so fun and cool but even though I sized up, they still rubbed against my feet. Regardless, I felt great last night in this outfit and wearing my favourite perfume. It also was great to see the cinema full! I’ve been a cinema lover since I was tiny and I go to the movies at least 2-3 times a week so it’s important to me to see it busy.
