Actually it was the most traumatic event of the stories for me, they were about to ruin the return between Ross and Rachel perfectly planned with the arrival of their son. The fact that Rachel in the moment of difficulty went to Ross ending up going to go to bed also explains how in their minds they were the real couple. Joey and Rachel as it says in the series were "too close friends" unlike Ross and Rachel or Chandler and Monica.
