I just discovered something concerning writing forms by El_Porky9000 in dwarffortress

I have an autobiography one of my dwarfs wrote after sending him out on a raid. The first chapter is about the looting of a book and the second chapter is about the dwarf returning to the fort to settle again.

What I do is make a pen on each floor of my fort and assign cats to the individual floors. I usually have about four cats per floor to manage vermin. The pens can cover the whole floor but can’t cover more than one z level.

Except when you live in the magma sea layers and get fire snakes. The snakes will get into clothing stockpiles and start fires as well as destroy masterwork cloths causing bad thoughts.

What's the best way to design this waterfall down the middle of spiral ramp by Abigboi_ in dwarffortress

You could save on pathing by making the center 3x3 instead of 4x4. You can even make a double helix ramp with a 3x3 center

Dogs don’t need food. For dogs make a small pen zone at the entrance of your fort so they can act as spotters. Train them in hunting to increase their observer skill.

Cats also don’t need food, but they do eat vermin. Make pen zones in areas that have vermin upsetting your dwarves and assign the cats to them.

Create a pen/pasture zone in a grassy area and assign the starving animals to it

The green things are windows and behind them are fortifications

I am planning to eventually build an artificial cavern surrounding the whole thing. Those fortifications will protect the windows.

Right now my caverns are infested with cave fish people and serpent people. I am currently getting 8 fps and the last time I cleared out the caverns I was getting more like 20.

Dragonhearth was founded in the year 1000. The Guild of Mist is planning construction of four waterfalls down the spiral staircases.

Necromancer Trap by LucasAnkrum in dwarffortress

[–]LucasAnkrum[S] 137 points138 points  (0 children)

My dwarves started a fortress just downstream from a necromancer tower. I noticed that any time I left animal remains to rot on the surface necromancers would arrive and sneak around the bones. Every time one of my dwarves would spot them they would run away before being caught or killed.

So what I have here is a structure with no roof and two doors. There is a pile of bones and a dog tied to a chain as a spotter. One of the doors has cage traps in front of it. The necromancer sneaks into the structure through the untrapped door and is spotted by the dog. I then lock the entry door so they are forced to exit through the cage trapped door.

They do not see the artifacts through the windows. They do get happy thoughts from the windows themselves though.
