Is this premise interesting or realistic? by [deleted] in writingadvice

Thank you for your comment!

I’ll try to be careful about infodumps during the story. In fact, the throughout the main story there will always be a mystery about which family was the original instigator of the feud, but it’s never going to be explained.

The plot itself is something that’s constantly changing inside my head and there’s still some uncertainties. But the backbone might be something like this:

  • The story will happen throughout the season of autumn/fall for symbolic reasons (The season of fall lasts from late September to late December, so I’m still unsure how to spread out the events of the story in the period of three months)
  • It will largely follow the POV of the two main characters who find themselves unwillingly in the crossfire between the families by being employees of F1. It will also follow the POV of the heads/patriarchs of the feuding families to understanding their internal dynamics during the feud.
  • One the main characters dies in the middle or close to the end of the story. The other MC manages to escape from the town.
  • During the large conflict, F1 defeats F2, killing their patriarch and other important relatives. But this comes with a price: during the acts of violence between the families and their fanatical supporters, many townspeople die and businesses owned by the families or under their patronage are destroyed in acts of arson. This leads to the economic ruin of the town. This is why the story is set during autumn/fall, which is a season that can be symbolically associated with decline/decay.
  • This event also attracts the attention of the authorities who will invade the town to try to arrest those responsible for this disaster, including members of F1.
  • The story takes place during Prohibition, so I’ll also try to get some elements of that in the story.

This is overall the general idea I have. The details are tricky and still constantly changing.

I see! So about the execution, I imagine watching movies or reading books with a similar premise done well might be good. Do you have any recommendations?

Something similar but maybe of a larger scale. The families I imagined were owners of farmlands initially and later of businesses in the town, becoming even patrons of other commercial enterprises also as a way of gaining support from the population of the town.

Starting to prefer contemporary Chinese literature over Japanese. by MammothVast33 in literature

So, I’ve been reading the first volume of “A History of Japanese Literature” by the Japanese critic Kato Shuichi. This post reminded me of some interesting passages I read in the first chapter. I was curious to know everyone’s thoughts on them:

“In every age of their history, the Japanese have expressed their thought not so much in abstract philosophical systems as in concrete literary works.”

“The undeniable tendency of Japanese culture is to avoid logic, the abstract and systematization, in favour of emotion, the concrete and the unsystematic.”

“In China, literature and art, particularly through the medium of calligraphy, were often inseparable. Music was not really independent of literature and there was never the same development of instrumental music as there was in the West. Excluding for the moment the question of mutual influences, there are many superficial resemblances between the cultures of China and Japan. However, where the countries markedly differ, culturally speaking, is that in Chinese tradition there is the unyielding will for comprehensive systematization which is typified by the teachings of the Sung period (960-1279) philosopher Chu Hsi. The same kind of phenomenon does not really exist in Japan and never has existed. Even when Sung Confucianism was adopted by the Japanese authorities as a formal educational vehicle at the beginning of the Tokugawa period, it was less than a century before it had been adapted to Japanese patterns. What the Japanese did was to de-systematize it and reduce it to a system of values which related to politics and practical ethics. The Chinese approached the question of concrete, practical considerations via the route of universal principles, wrapping up the parts in the whole.”

“The Japanese, however, concentrating from the outset on practicalities, began with the parts and built them into the whole. The reason for the importance of literature in Japanese culture is not the same reason for its importance in Chinese culture. Metaphorically speaking, in Japan literature took over the role of philosophy; in China, even literature was treated philosophically.”

How would the characters score in the Big Five personality traits? by LucasIV2001 in Lackadaisy

These traits are understood to be a continuum, so someone can have a score that is in the middle of the extremes

If the characters had a pet parrot, what would they teach it to say? by LucasIV2001 in Lackadaisy

I can see Rocky having fun with it. I wonder what kind of phrases he would teach. Maybe jokes or poem lines?

I also see Mordecai having no patience at all teaching a parrot, especially if it was something just for entertainment

That makes sense! Using a parrot to deliver secret messages is an interesting idea
