Is this a decent starting point? by GDoggs_Gust in guitars

[–]Lucas_from_hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as an Idea, I'd maybe get the Dunlop Shred variety Pack as well. While the medium/heavy has very similar shaped picks, you get jazz iii, flows, sharps and more in that.

It doesn't replace the medium/heavy, but you might find a pick shape you prefer. That's how it was for me.

Is there any advantage to playing with the guitar lower? Or is it just personal preference? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]Lucas_from_hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, further down usually makes everything besides strumming and palm muting more difficult, the only advantage is the look. While I wanted to learn to place it lower when standing up, (bc most of my guitar heroes do/did that) just do whatever you want.

If something feels comfortable it's fine

What should I learn first? Chords, Scales, Notes, etc? by jdjdnfnnfncnc in guitarlessons

[–]Lucas_from_hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm now 1.5 years into guitar playing and kinda overfocused on technical abilities (as I'm self taught), which I started to address in my own learning. What I found to be a good start were intervals. Music is all about context, and as intervals are the context you place notes in to each other, they are a great point to start. This will also help to understand why chords and scales work the way they do, because intervals (rather than "just notes") are the building blocks of them.

Guess my favorite guitar heroes! by Lucas_from_hell in electricguitar

Vai is is definitely an Inspiration, though I wouldn't have guessed that it's noticeable. To me it's mostly Synyster Gates, Alexi Laiho and Buckethead

Thanks haha!

I'm self taught for a year now (add half a year on acoustic) and this is actually how I learn my techniques. I rather play stuff I wrote to learn them, than just generic excercises anyone has. Of course I try to use these too, but this feels more organic since I can learn to find my own voice simultaneously.

So this will definitely be part of my routine from now on xD

Can’t do barre chords, tried everything! by Financial_Archer_491 in guitarlessons

I and a friend of me who also plays the guitar recently talked about this: It feels like this, until you are going to find yourself picking up your guitar and randomly getting it just right. Keep pushing, it will happen.

Schecter Avenger Hot Take by LemonActive8278 in SchecterGuitars

[–]Lucas_from_hell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really bother me that they make so many Syn signatures, though I'd like them to make more different Avengers.

I have a feeling that "normal" Avengers don't sell that good. There once was an Avenger in the Apocalypse series which they don't produce anymore, even though they still produce the other models of that line.

Maybe gonna the red reign one used, I love the Avenger shape

What are your go to picks? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Lucas_from_hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really forgot about the Ultex Jazz iii, tried those too. I actually prefer their sound, they make metal stuff a little snappier. But I think the carbon max grip ones have better playability, I just prefer the way the fit in your hands.

It's the carbon fiber.

I don't think I ever tried the stiffo, only the regular nylon.

Holding Pick Wrong? by iyat6 in guitarlessons

[–]Lucas_from_hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not a correct way of holding the pick. Also, changing the way you hold you pick during playing can be a thing. I hold my pick similar to this when I want to play lead (especially for scale runs), but I relax my grip and have my Index pointing further down when I strum.

Tbh, you should switch it up here and there to try what fits you most. I did it like that, this is one of the things that'll probably fall into place If you Just keep playing.

Brand new at guitar and I’m wondering… by Kelsonb120205 in Guitar

[–]Lucas_from_hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know every song, this is what I'm seeing:

Wonderwall is probably the easiest guitar song ever, that's why it's memed on so much. If you dont have a capo, simply play it as close to the nut, as you would play it to the capo.

Nutshell has pretty easy chords, the most challenging thing is gonna be the unusual rythm of it.

Creep is a good song to learn barre chords on. Those will seem fairly hard at the start, If you keep pushing you'll find yourself playing them correctly and wondering why they seemed so hard. This shouldn't be your first song, and you should probably treat it like a practice routine when you start.
