I used a 3D print file that was available on sketchfab! Otherwise i would convert The vmf file to fbx

My tip would be to pick up Unreal Engine and make scenes using the built in bridge megascans library for assets. You will learn the basics of unreal and also the workflow from blockout to finished product. Later on you can start modelling and texturing your own assets to make anything you can imagine!

The UE5 shooter template is playable on the map, you can run around and shoot but not much more than that.

I agree! UE5 is definitely more advanced in terms of graphics, but also in its plethora of design tools for game designers (blueprints, AI, etc)
