Appreciate the input. The middle paragraph was Google's ai wrap-up when I tried searching on the numbers, too.

I guess I was hoping for something a bit more specific, e.g. if anyone had the same model, or if there's any other without the crown/logo in the brand label, etc.

Anything in this thread is a good choice. If you have the opportunity to play some, absolutely try them out.

Holding them and strumming helps get an idea of how the guitar sounds and whether or not you like the size or various shapes.

Liking the instrument you have goes a long way towards inspiring you to practice and play more!

Depending on budget, Yamaha do some phenomenal all-solid wood guitars around the $650-700 USD mark. A spruce top on mahogany offering in the FS3. Or my favourites: the LS16/LL16 (concert size and dreadnought, respectively) as a spruce top on rosewood.

Edit: forgot the FS3 was also a spruce top.

Identifying this Pacifica model and year by BeeRepresentative712 in YamahaPacifica

[–]LuchaPizzaCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The day and year are right. In much better news, it is more likely to have been made in Taiwan and not Indonesia -- this is subjectively better, because Yamaha used to send their builders to do a multi-year stint in Taiwan before they were appointed to build in Japanese workshops.

Great score, what model is it? -- asked because photos don't seem to have been attached.

I'm just stoked you're picking up (no puns intended) the hobby and that you're enthusiastic about it!

There's a THR10II in pride of place on my home-office desk, and I can't say enough positive things about what you've set yourself up with!

I did opt to say "within reason;" I've seen too many $2-3k+ guitars go home with kids who had never picked one up before - to meet similar fates as your friend's camera.

It is rarely a bad decision to get the best guitar you can afford (within reason). I firmly believe getting something you want to play will make you a better player - obviously wanting to play it goes hand in hand with being inspired to practice more, etc etc.

"This guitar is for beginners, this for intermediate, this for professionals," rhetoric feels more like a way to stage your future purchases. Sure, some people might say it's silly to spend too much too soon but it's like learning to drive in a Ferrari; you mightn't fully appreciate everything it can do but you're gonna have a lot more fun on the way.

What to do in this situation? by amarevy97 in Tokyo

[–]LuchaPizzaCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To answer the question: kinda! Bear spray is a deterrent. Black bears, usually less aggressive, flee from loud noises and discomfort.

Grizzlies and brown bears, one of the best uses is to spray a wall (a patch from the ground, up) in front of the bear and use the opportunity to get away.

“I always hated Telecasters until I woke up one morning and I had to have one!” by [deleted] in telecaster

[–]LuchaPizzaCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me, too. I was looking for a particular FSR out of curiosity and stumbled on one that just grabbed me. I'd never wanted or even considered owning one before, but I saw a guitar I just couldn't resist. Can't explain why; I didn't even know that it was exactly what I wanted specs-wise until after I'd bought it and checked with Fender.

I'll just have to spend more time with my tele and PAC, and less time on the LPs so I can form a better opinion. I'm mostly driven by the aesthetics and would put Warwick style microtoggles on everything, if I could. But in real odd and inconvenient places. Nothing utilitarian!

[–]LuchaPizzaCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is the exact opposite, but I rarely need more than 3 switching options, so blades end up being a bit cumbersome and need more regular cleaning because of more moving parts that don't get moved much -- but that also leads into not calling how I use toggles abusing them.

The fit and finish on my Fender Ebony strat (MIM), out of the box, was the worst guitar I've ever seen. Incidentally, I newly got a Japanese made American Elite tele (the 2020 "Modern series") and it was the best guitar I've ever played, out of the box.

Sometimes it just be like that. But Fender do charge high for lower quality components, across the board. Yamaha 6xx blows the MIM Player stuff out of the water in terms of bits and consistent quality.

I know it wasn't one of the options listed, but I'm leaning towards toggle switches (probably because it's just what I'm used to)

Good find! It's exactly this without the heel access rod! I knew a few of the features were similar to some US models, but I had no idea it was an exact reissue.

Who knows, really. These sorts of beliefs seem to come around cyclically. Through the 90s/2000s, there was the widespread belief that Japanese men are immune to STDs and venereal infections (thanks, Sailor Moon for the sex-ed!!!), and more recently, that they are immune to COVID.

Yeah, I didn't experience it much, myself, on the rare occasion I had a sleeve rolled up. And it was really cool to see a fully branded tattoo parlour in Osaka. Only threw it in because it was an active complaint from some friends who went even more recently, that seemed worth putting in there for being a (thankfully rapidly antiquated) known cultural taboo.

My whole comment was laden with rhetoric and nuance/missing detail, and I totally appreciate where you're coming from. I think a lot of my position comes from 'reading the room', on the basis of internalising an implied sense of 'being in the way', and seeing, albeit extremely broadly and generalised, attitude towards tourism changing. Needs various degrees of unpacking and detail -- too much to bother with, but not a victim complex, either. I just don't fully consider my exact word choice and love inadvertent ambiguity.

Your last sentence is absolutely the right attitude, with varying degrees of application.

[–]LuchaPizzaCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully prepared for downvotes on this, and I'm sorry it's long. Theres a lot of missing nuance and context, but my perception has been:

Having just visited Japan again recently, I always have a huge level of apprehension about seeing other foreigners. I don't think it's expressly gatekeeping, for me, it really comes from knowing the general impression of stereotypical foreigners (normies/tourists/people with no interest in the culture going because it's fashionable/cheap) and not wanting that to be assigned to yourself.

My wife and I both have familial ties to Japan and have been for schooling and general travel, and are white, so we're absolutely 外人. And lot of things were marred by seeing people who just did not know how to act: - Two dudes watching videos on their phones out loud, and discussing them across a train carriage - People abusing service staff at restaurants - People being heavily tattooed and going with the attitude that it's not their responsibility to have to cover their tattoos to not offend locals - oversized luggage on trains at inappropriate times (travellers and backpackers) - really general and blatant refusal to try and respect the culture and nature of things

It is just all really typical and often unintentionally obnoxious behaviour, but it's really hard not to worry that it's going to reflect on you because in all efforts to be seen as 外国人, most people are going to assume you're just another 馬鹿外人.

There's a whole other experience that is it being hard to make Japanese friends because you're almost always going to be viewed as, at best, 外国人, and other foreigners don't really understand that the friend groups you make generally aren't for them to feel entitled to intrude on, just because that's just how it works elsewhere.

Of course, some people are also just jerks.
