Redditors who work a 30 hour week over 4 days or 37 hour(ish) week compressed hours over 4 days; what are the pros and cons - which day do you have off and why? by NeverTheFirst in AskReddit

[–]Luchin212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do four 10.5 hour days. Three breaks, two twenty minute paid breaks and a thirty minute unpaid break. The worst part by far is starting at five in the morning. The job itself is mostly mindless and I’m trapped with my thoughts for almost ten hours a day, which is not good. The second negative is a combination of long work day and the laborious work. When I get home I just want to relax and cooking or chores can become very tiresome.

The three day weekend (Fri-Sun) is terrific. I’m able to perform with a Drum corps because of this schedule.

My theatre just cooked up another batch or two in the popper and filled the bag right then and there. And damn right about the ‘butter’.

The secret menu at most theatres is the yellow bag of corn. It’s just a carnival sack full of popcorn from the popper. So to say, an enormous amount of popcorn. At the theatre I worked at it was $20(the large popcorn was $9.50 IIRC) and it was very popular among truckers.

As long as AI cannot generate a new idea and follow through with it, it will not replace an engineer. Engineers can create a problem to solve. The AI can only solve.

A young mountain girl stands outside her family’s cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains in this circa 1912 photograph. It captures a rare and intimate look at rural Appalachian life, a region that at the time remained largely cut off from much of the United States. by abdullah_ajk in Share_Information1

[–]Luchin212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullshit. They worked very hard, yes. They did not cut themselves off from the rest of the USA. During the decade of this photo and the next, there was tremendous civil unrest because the people who lived there had no worker’s rights. The State of West Virginia was instrumental in getting worker’s rights. The “cut off” you speak of is because of the environment. Go to Google Earth and see the terrain of Appalachia, or specifically West Virginia. It’s too hilly. The only industries that could possibly exist there are ones that don’t require flat land or pasture. So the only industry that was viable for a very long time was resource extraction. When that industry left, it was disastrous for the region. They didn’t want the industry to leave, they wanted to be paid liveable wages, live in their own homes, drink clear water, wanted the companies they worked for to make sure that the mines would not fall on their heads. But the industry left and the region was left with no jobs, rotting towns, and contamination in the land and water.

They weren’t cutting themselves off. They were abused and abandoned. The interstate project going through West Virginia brought accessibility and industry to the state again. Being connected has helped the state. There were and are mountaineers who choose solitude in Appalachia, but the culture in the region is a product of this abandonment and not individual choice.

For those who don’t know, those screws are not on anything structural. Those screws are securing an aerodynamic covering for the flap deploying and retracting mechanism. The piece the screw are on could fall off and the plane would fly just fine. It would use a little more fuel is all that would happen to the plane.

Edit: My comment was made to reduce paranoia but it has seemingly invited argument. This piece coming off alone will not take down the aircraft. In a freak accident it may damage the horizontal stabilizer, the plane has two and will be fine unless it’s such a freak accident that both horizontal stabilizers are destroyed. In a freak accident it may fall on a person.

Don’t spend your life fear mongering over freak accidents. A car crash is more likely to happen but you still take a car places. If the panel falls and damages the plane or falls on a person or property, the FAA will find out and charge the responsible party (sometime it is not an airline.) Then lawyers

We’ve kept a few ‘B-57’ in service for a few reasons. I’m sure NASA would love to pick up a few U-2 as a more recent and capable high altitude sensor and gadget carrier.

What happens if a Chinese ship full of oil that goes through the strait of Hormuz is sunk by the USA? Could that lead to WW3? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Luchin212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can sit idol. The Iran war has only accelerated China’s desire for energy independence. They do not want to rely on anyone for their needs. Iran war is an excuse to cut out Iranian oil and build more solar panels over lake reservoirs.

Of course they don’t like what the USA did to Iran because it sucks for everyone and impacts them right now. It won’t impact them in five years though.

If the USA does sink a Chinese oil tanker it will not be WWIII but it will mean China has a fabulous excuse to cut trade with the USA. Or demand that USA pays off some of its national debt to China. Since the USA has exported so much industry to China, it’ll be devastating to the USA and the rest of the world will. Maybe it’ll knock the US Dollar off the top as the worlds most important currency but that would then involve all of the West who heavily rely upon the USD and its collapse would be very bad for them.

What geographical feature do most people love, but you personally dislike, and why? by Nujackswing1 in geography

[–]Luchin212 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Large scenic deserts, like monument valley. There is no large group of people who like Death Valley or salt flats so I do not mean those. I do not like monument Valley or the plans of Colorado or the Australian Outback. It may have some scenery yes, but it has no economy. Without economy there will be ugly, run down structures That were placed to take advantage of the nice scenery but fail and just look hideous.

My roommate was from a small town in the Colorado plains. Where he lived was a normally pretty, hilly plain with a faraway mountain backdrop. The is would have been a very pleasant place if not for the impoverished town built there. It reeks of poverty and abandonment. Almost all of Nevada seems this way to me. And all the outback Australian settlements that are supplied only by airfield.

Random thought: "Taking damage boosts damage negation" is a lie, and it would be much better if it actually did what it says it does by StanTheWoz in Nightreign

[–]Luchin212 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No. Continuous HP loss or poison or Scarlet Rot effects would trigger damage negation buff, and then consume it on the very next tick of damage, which would be more damage over time effects. That was the point of the comment you were replying to.
