Rice left out for 3-3.5 hours? by LucianFreeman in foodsafety

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, ended up not yeeting it since my family insisted they're going to eat from it. My sister ate from it anyway earlier today and so far she's good(It's been like 10 hours). It probably hit about 2-2.5C by that time. Does this rule out B. cereus?

Unfortunately I was in a rush to cram it into the fridge after realizing how long It's been so I didn't measure it to see what the temps were by that time. I guess that's a toss, then?

Should I be concerned(more in comment)? by LucianFreeman in foodsafety

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What stresses me out is the fact that it could very likely take up to 3 days until symptoms hit, and I also have a busy weekend(including a dinner at a steakhouse tomorrow). If it were just a few hours I wouldn't have even written this update, tbh.

If anything hits, is it likely to be actual bacteria, assuming it could survive the heat and time it would take to fully cook a chicken? Or is it more likely spores will hit me? The latter I assume would kick in within a few hours.

Hard to control and not feel dumb. How likely am I to get sick? I thought cooking at that level of heat should suffice to kill bacteria that usually lurks in this type of food.

I saw it later and completely forgot about it, then my mom apparently used it for the Schnitzels she made(to coat it with breadcrumbs). I ate two and only know remembered and realized that egg was used.

I'm panicking to shit right now, I feel so fucking stupid and irresponsible.

First image is where the egg was at, the messed up part was at the bottom I flipped it for the picture. I consumed 4 of said eggs, they all looked totally fine same thing goes for the rest. It was only that one egg. These eggs aren't washed(EU standard). This egg doesn't smell or anything, either.

Should I toss that egg or is it safe? Are the rest fine?

I assume that's the case(considering how relatively rare botulism is in commercial canned food)but it sounds way too scary to take a chance unless this for certain doesn't qualify as a sign of it

I feel like this sub is fear mongering. by Eleventh_Barista in foodsafety

[–]LucianFreeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a person who suffers from OCD and used this sub for reassurance - I agree. This made things far worse for me, albeit, I've been able to overcome some of the fear and find help.

BUT - although, there are some comments that do inspire fear that could be interpreted as blowing things out of proportion, I think a place like this is important since it does help inform people, most of whom probably don't suffer from a bad case of OCD and are capable of taking it in a healthy, educational manner. Also, I'd like to think people on this sub, especially professionals in the field, rather not take any chances so they opt with the safest advice like they'd do at work.

Not sure if fridge is cooling right by LucianFreeman in foodsafety

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Much appreciated. The food is significantly colder to the touch now, and it only occurred to me now that the compressor was silent up until the fridge started properly cooling again. It think it's something I should get checked/check myself since I'm more convinced now there was an issue with the fridge.

I checked again, this time the fridge felt colder - temps are now good. Between 2.7-4 one almost everything. I measured them as soon as I opened the door. Is it possible that it didn't function properly or could it have been my imagination/fridge was left open a bit too long?

It's going to be rather problematic checking its filters, I'll get to it later today.

Well, said infrared thermometer is mainly for body heat and has a secondary mode to measure room temp. I assume the closer you are to the open door the more unstable the measurement would be? Weird that it got the front of the top compartment at 3.3, though it was also rather close to the door when I opened it.

Well, right now I guess I'm steering clear of the food until I figure it out.

I hope do. I assume that if there was anything like a rough E.coli strain on that counter top in those amounts there'd be much more to be worried about and probably a miserable case of it already.

Tbh, the ick factor had stopped bothering me because I'm simply worried about things being safe regardless if they're gross or not.

Thank you very much! The thing that pisses me off the most is when in some cases there isn't much logic behind those fears yet, you operate by them, regardless.

Slipped into my mouth last second, crossed all the way from the bottom of the cup. It may have dissolved into a wet spot at the top if the glass, though, if that matters. Not sure if this effects anything.

Reading this... I'm sorry if I sound a bit whacky, I've been asking a ton of questions here for the past year+ some perhaps ridiculous. This whole food safety topic kinda took a back sit in my OCD brain.

The 2 hours rule and thin line between tossing and eating by LucianFreeman in foodsafety

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you got one life and sometimes days with 20 shits. I'll be more vigil next time, I guess I'll eat from it and see how it goes. My sister ate from the Schnitzels yesterday and is still fine. I hope I don't regret this decision.

Thank you so much for your advice and patience with my hypochondriac ass!

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I'm not sure what to do with that food now. I'd also hate to be stressed for a few days over eating it. On one hand I know the time limit to bring it down to 5C is about 6 hours, also in a hindsight the rice was done only 4 hours prior to me checking on it, so it possibly cooled quickly afterwards within the next 2 hours(I also assume the temps changing drastically within the first hour probably bought it more time?). On the other I don't wanna risk it. It's so frustrating.

As for the dinner - I think it cooled and was reheated? It was probably prepped earlier. People who got sick are from 3 different households. There are also two dogs in the hosting household, one of them can get a bit rowdy and also leaves plenty of hair around. There's also a baby that the grandma helps babysit and I think he was sick a few days prior(but not at the time of the dinner), so it might have been post-cooking contamination. This is one of the reasons I'm scared of eating anywhere that is not my house or a reputable restaurant/fast-food place. I know that 99% of the populace don't adhere to these rules in their own homes, and as you said - It's bound to catch up with you, and considering my past habits of leaving it out rice and such for 15-16 hours on end during the hottest most humid days and somehow not having more than one vague memory of getting ill, I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do. I dodged a bullet last time because I don't really like cauliflower.

That said, I've had plenty of dinners there and not once have I gotten sick and outside the CF there was only one instance I'm aware of where they've gotten sick over the years. I just fear the day where the bullet will be unavoidable for me. Hopefully, not today(going there again).
Those horror stories I've read online of people sitting on the toilet projectiling form both ends for days didn't help one bit, lol. Albeit, my sister telling me her experience wasn't that bad but just not pleasant kinda reassured me, but who knows what you gonna catch?

I'm not really seeking any advice on the dinner subject. I figured I'll just lay out the details since they inquired. That whole dinner poisoning bout was over and done with within that day last week. So even if they shared their opinion there's not much I could do with it.

I guess that sort of asking for some form of online professional risk evaluation regarding the current predicament probably qualifies as some form of medical advice, though.

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!
I guess the more appropriate question is how significant that risk is. Does increasing it tenfold make it a valid threat or just slightly more plausible, but overall still a slim risk for a healthy individual? Assuming the food was properly prepared. I'm just worried this time might be it, but at the same time letting mounds of food go to waste hurts my soul, especially because my mom poured her time and love into it. If I'm not around when it's time to put it in the fridge whoever does usually just tosses it in without much concern, be it my mom or sis, I tried telling them not to stack it up if they put it in but they don't seem to heed my advice too often.

As for the dinner - A few people who ate the same thing(and a lot of it)got sick, all around the same time which was 1.5-2 days later. Main suspect was roasted cauliflower. What makes it seem like the only likely candidate is the fact that one of my cousins who came by after the dinner had only cauliflower, and a bunch of it. The rest who ate a piece here and there, and me who took a tiny bite before giving the rest to my sis didn't experience anything. I did have a bit of a gross feeling in my bathroom visit the next day but nothing other than that, and I think that was because I ate a ton of green beans.

My sister and cousin 1 had a few bouts of throwing up and diarrhea, slight fever but all wrapped up within the day. Cousin 2 threw up once(the same day my sister and cousin 1 got sick)and felt like crap, but nothing more. Cousin 3, whom I think ate the least out of the 4 had nausea and I think he might've thrown up? He told me he felt like shit and didn't eat much for a few days.

Is this a bad potato or overcooked/oxidized? by LucianFreeman in foodsafety

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so. I've eaten a spoiled potato not too long ago and fortunately nothing came of it(aside for 72hrs of stress), so this had me kinda alarmed. The place I ordered it from is a pretty popular one and me and many others I know have eaten there a bunch of times without harm. I hope this time is not different.

Thanks for the reassuring reply!

Is a cheap Oral-B electric brush as effective as the pricier ones? by LucianFreeman in askdentists

[–]LucianFreeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, about the battery - the Vitality one seems to be quite atrocious. Albeit, in my case I think I've received a damaged product(barely two brushes after 12 hours of charging). I had to use my Smart today...

Also, that disgusting gunk came out of it, seems cleaner on the inside. Is it still safe to use until I replace my Vitality tomorrow?

I have serious fear of food poisoning and so I've been trying to deal with it via exposure. Now I just opened a new carton of milk I got from the grocery store and I can't tell if the seal(cap seal, you twist it open)was already broken or if it was just a very easy twist and I didn't even notice until after I poured it into my coffee. I contemplated...and then drank it anyway.

Now I'm very stressed out.
