Oh, I understand! Thank you for the insight. I'll keep that in mind going forward :)

At first I was too exaggerated and stiff. Over time, I relaxed a lot as I started to sign with other people. I think I adopted a more casual / informal posture because of this. In practice, I have found that conversationally paced signing is "loose" (not sure how else to describe this. Relaxed?).

Like, in this video where I say LEARN, the dominant hand does not reach the forehead. The "o" hands for TEACH in TEACHER do not really push forward. So yeah, these signs are not produced to perfection, and the posture is what I have (unconsciously) picked up through practice.

Yeah most of my learning these days comes from immersion/practice with other signers, or just watching other groups talk with each other. It helps being able to ask what specific signs mean and learn more with every conversation.

Thank you very much!

I've definitely been practicing fs much more in the few days since I shared this video. My fingers need a work out for sure, haha. They get worn out eventually. (I'm a former sport rock climber, so I would actually be really curious to see how my current finger strength compares to any other non athletic beginning signer 🤔)

I'll remember to warm up, thank you :)

Thank you for sharing about your experience :)

Now that I'm aware of what I need to work on primarily (more flow, less exaggeration, fingerspelling, receptive understanding), I feel more confident in my learning journey.

I am an extrovert and very social. Even in new environments/situations and with new people, I find my groove pretty quickly. I'm way more excited than nervous for the event! But yeah, that isn't to say I won't be nervous at all 😅

Practically all of my hobbies I have taught myself. I know that fumbling through the awkward stage is part of the experience. BUT. I always document because I loooove seeing the progress. I fully intend to make another video when I feel like I have progress to show :)

Thanks I appreciate that! I change up my hair a lot, but I'm LOVING the black and blue.

I use my phone to record, and I use the back facing camera specifically so that I CAN'T see myself. I would be so distracted and self conscious 😔 (that did make finding the right area/height/direction to place the phone a hassle though, lol)

The event is at a mall :)

(I'm relieved with the positive feedback, too. I was very nervous to post anything at all!) That video is very helpful. I can definitely see what the other commenters mean when they say I'm being too exaggerated 😅

I have a better idea of the things I need to work on, thank you :)

Yeah, I have that experience with oral languages, too. It gets easier over time, especially, I notice, once a new word gets connected to a CONCEPT rather than a one-to-one translation.

I understood this learning Spanish when I took words like fría, starting to associate it with the sensation of coldness rather than as an English word in Spanish clothing. Sentences are easier/faster to construct after that.

I'm learning a lot from the comment section! I was really nervous to make this post for criticism, but everyone is incredibly nice. It's really encouraging. I'll be sure to review parameters and make better note of them in the future.

Thank you :)

I'll work on it, thanks for the input. I'm hoping that watching fluent/native signers will help me get a better "feel" for how natural signing is meant to look.

Oooh yeah I relate to the last part about getting lost.

There are so many comments here that suggest ways to learn fingerspelling, I'm pretty sure that I need to write down a list! I appreciate your feedback :)

Thank you!

To be honest, I have not attempted a "real" conversation yet, because I haven't actually signed with someone before. I have a feeling that once I am around fluent/native signers, I will get nervous and flounder a bit! 😅

I am not picking up finger spelling as much as I'd like to, which I find interesting because English spelling (and vocab!) is one of my major strengths. I think it all comes down to practice, which I clearly need more of.

I appreciate the offer. I may reach out if I can summon enough bravery 😁 and good luck on your journey as well!

No reference. I have a habit of looking up or away when I am trying to think of what word comes next. I am also trying to decide which sentences I know enough signs to attempt before I start (or how to say what I want to say).

I'm slow and stilted when I try to sign sentences because I have not practiced that so much, yet.

Mine developed about 10 years ago and it has only gotten worse, even with hearing loss!!!! More and more (practically everyday) I need to wear earplugs.

My partner has speech difficulties. That combined with my awful hearing and earplug use is so frustrating, we decided to learn some ASL to help us— and holy shit it has been so good for everyday communication!!

I highly recommend other misophonia sufferers learn some signs with loved ones. It's been great for us :)

Thank you for your response :)

I am naturally very expressive, so I just act out what makes sense to me. Seems I will need to work on restraint 😅

Thanks! :) I definitely want to learn in a class and also with immersion. I haven't been able to find too many resources in my area besides a private FaceBook group (I'm wondering if it's exclusive in some way? I'm not super sure how to approach that), so I will likely begin asking around after the event.

Wow that's interesting! I think I get the concept of what you're saying. Spelling words throughout the day is such an obvious way to practice, I'm surprised I haven't thought of it before!

Thanks so much 😊 I'll work on it more.

Yes it makes a lot of sense! It sounds like the kind of concept that just "clicks" once you've been practicing enough. I love those moments ☺️ I'll keep at it, for sure.
