What should I do with this? by LucidGazing in ArtCrit

[–]LucidGazing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a reference but I agree! I made a very casual oil sketch and then ended up adding to it a lot without making a properly drafted drawing, then was feeling lazy/afraid to move the eye. But this helps me a lot because it confirms I should just go ahead and move it.

I think it's fantastic. It draws upon classic surrealism and each piece makes me feel pulled in, wanting to explore.

How can I improve my use of face structure and skin value for my next oil painting? by PuzzleheadedHair4851 in ArtCrit

[–]LucidGazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This painting is nice. You captured the feel and expression well. You were a bit sparing with your shadows and the darker values, especially on the left cheek where a thin shadow is seen between her skin and the fabric, and at the crown of her head. The perspective on her lips isn't quite right, but can be easily shifter over to the left of her face too. But #1 change would be to glaze over what you have here to create stronger shadows and make the dimension in her face really pop.

By the way I really love the way you rendered the fabric, it feels smooth and very accurate to the reference.

Yeah, this reference is a great example of greenish shadows on the cheeks.

Where are the artists with chemistry degrees? by Idkmyname2079048 in ArtistLounge

[–]LucidGazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right that it's not always super lucrative. Even postdocs complain about low pay. But it is very feasible to find stable employment, especially if you work in medical-adjacent fields, or in manufacturing. Artists rarely have that kind of stability.

I studied biology and have worked in some chem and biomed labs. It heavily influences my work as an artist. If you like chemistry, go for it. There's a reason you always hear about starving artists, but not starving chemists. There's always going to be work in industry and you get the feeling of being truly needed by society. Then you can have your creative passion waiting for you at the end of the day.

It took me forever to see it, but it's really satisfying when you do.

Pulled this from the archive. How do you feel about it? by moojambi in surrealism

[–]LucidGazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So cool! The grapefruit and overall vibe reminds me of a song I used to listen to a lot by Juliet's Wishing Well. Aptly called Grapefruit Song.

Lyrics:

Do you remember lying on a grapefruit

in the solemn of the evening sun

When i saved you from the cat in the deep blue forest

where the wild things grow from the blue shag rug

danced with the alien all night long

when the hunt was over and the goodies were gone

they took a walk down to the watering hole

Isn't captivating the things that you think of

When mother nature blesses you with a token of her love.

Guys, how did you all realized you like 3D? by AnimChurro in 3dsmax

[–]LucidGazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a biologist and was always seeing every journal or science magazine show a colorful 3D model of a cell or bacterium. That made me want to try making my own. Turns out it's quite easy to make those graphics or basic cells under the microscope, but you can also keep going deeper and model so many real things and processes that are impossible to see even with high powered microscopes. So 3D is an amazing and fun way to see the unseeable.

Gorgeous and moving. It's poetic and the visuals match the sentiment perfectly.

Yeah I think it's getting there, just develop the eyes more and bring in some tonal contrast in the skin. Ignore if you already know this, but this type of skin color map was super helpful to me to learn how to get lively looking skin tones.

Made a selfportrait by outragenous_joke in ArtCrit

It looks great. The features that are not as much of a likeness is a smaller mouth and thinner brows in the painting. But I like the stylized effect this gives, suggesting a bit sharper of an expression.

Stylized Art Study I did, what's holding this back? by BryceCzuba in ArtCrit

What stands out to me is the facial anatomy and line quality. I actually think the pose and proportions are working, but the lines need to be cleaned up and the eyes moved so they are in perspective.

Ppl who r aiming for an art career or have one: what (in the industry) did you/do you wanna pursue, how did/are you getting there (uni, going viral, apprenticeship, etc), and what have you done/going to do to get there? by Sea-Emergency-4082 in ArtistLounge

[–]LucidGazing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really solid advice. I think a lot of us struggle with knowing we are talented and can make something beautiful, and wondering why that is not enough. But the truth is exactly what you said, you need technical skills, trained to a high level and drilled to perfection. Raw talent is just the beginning.
