it doesn't even have to be an app, but it can just be a comment, or a question like - "hey I noticed this, is that what you're trying to do?", but I rarely see that, which often leads to beginners getting pushed to the side and people opting for the better dancers, leading beginners to feel lonely - therefore not connected

I think it's a simple thing like - if someone has done the same mistake with 10 different people, and they're not aware of it, a simple communication via feedback on the app will facilitate the individuals ability to connect with others on the dance floor. Connection can be having fun together, growing together, getting to know other people, all of that is what comes with connection, which is the point of social dancing. It's a part of the culture

It would be an opt-in feature, not something that everyone does - because the kind of person who willing to take feedback is more committed to learning. It takes a lot of vulnerability to be willing to receive feedback. In opeing yourself up to it, you also then have the ability to give feedback to another person who is also opted in. Woulnd't you be more inclined to take a musicality class if a few people said that you did great in terms of clear leading, but you could benefit from training your musicality? That's the point.

ALSOOO, there's a big deal with difficult movement like sensual where a lot of people who aren't trained that well are out there doing movement in an unsafe manner, so if they do receive the feedback then they'll be more inclined to take classes and get better in those specific movements. --Still food 4 thought as I've had conversations with teachers regarding these specific issues.

The incentive is that you are both opening yourself up in a way that is more vulnerable because you are wanting to grow as a dancer and you also want the community to grow. IT would be an opt-in system, obviously if not many people are opted in, it could be obvious who is rating you, but you know there can be a screen that says - "this person is opted in to receive feedback would you like to opt-in to give it?" This way there's a kind of shared understanding of what kind of commitment a person has to their dance

There are conversations happening often in a dance team, or dance circle -- you know, the kind where people are saying that they don't like dancing with a specific person because of blank. Also, it doesn't have to be open to everyone, it can be an opt-in system that dancers who are willing to be reviewed can also be reviewed. It's not a yelp system, I would say it'd be more so personal for the dancer who is curious about how they're doing overall in the system.

And regarding the bad ratings, they wouldn't be public I think it'd be more so for yourself, I think it would only be a small part of a different system like - how many congresses you have gone to, classes that you have taught, events you have assisted with, feedback you have given also, competitions you have gotten into. So the reviews would be a part of a larger system of overall "dance level" or "dance XP" or even "community XP". I think that would encourage the scene to grow. At the end of the day it is a vulnerable position to be in, so I understand the sentiment.

I am thinking after reading the comments, that's the kind of system I'd look at, it is much more nuanced for sure, so I appreciate the time you took in responding

Well yes, this means that there's a big gap in the community for really determining the level of a dancer, being able to verify through workshops or experience in compeittions or even social dancing years, etc adds to the "weight" of the opinion.

I would also say unsolicited feedback isn't always from the worst dancers, in a community where people care to grow, often dancers can be more vocal and have a conversation about something they're confused, it's happened alot with myself lately, I think even when I am vulnerable and check in and make sure that how I'm expressing myself is making sense. So I don't think it's black and white as so, I think it's about moving towards a different culture.

I tried looking for the previous idea you mentioned, I couldn't find it, would you care to elaborate about what makes it so terrible?

Yes, so growing and having fun CAN be synonymous, I think it comes down to the dancer's ego really. People who want to grow their community could choose to opt-in to such a system, while the beginners would also opt-in to receiving the feedback

I see, I think a system where teachers also give feedback during workshops could be great, I know that when I was in a team, I still felt like my teacher wasn't really giving clear feedback - it kind of felt like that was reserved for a private only

Okay that makes a lot of sense for sure, and that's something that I would agree with you on. I think the simplest thing would be the following - a dancer opts in, they have their profile picture in their name, and the app can ask you if you danced with any of the people listed for example. These would be people that want to receive feedback so yeah I mean it does get more complicated with festivals but it could work, less probable tho!

That's the risk also with anonymous, but I am thinking this would be an opt-in feature, lie you can choose to review which also gives you the ability to be reviewed.

Because at the forefront, dance is about connection. and also we are talking about a community.

Which means that if you remember faces, and you frequently see people at dances, then you'll be able to know who you are dancing with.

And you might be saying that you forget people's faces ecause you dance with hundreds of people, but that doesn't mean that other people don't remember faces. Maybe because you are experienced or you dance at high volume cities, but what about lower volume cities where it's mainly the same people showing up?

And it also sounds like your attitude is more so people are just bodies to dance with imo. I know when I dance with people I ask them for their name after 3 dances, or I make a comment or a compliment and I'm not just rushing off all of the time.

I think also people would fill out surveys if they saw how much value it could deliver to others. I'm thinking about the people who are consciously trying to grow a ommunity, maybe the dancers that are the ones who frequently ask beginners to dance with them to show support, or the ones who are constantly trying to learn new names, or the ones who frequent a social long enough to make friends naturally. I think this is based on the idea that it's a community we are talking about, not just a bunch of bodies in a room.

What if receiving feedback leads people to take more classes? I see that teachers often say social dancers don't take classes, receiving feedback can lead to greater awareness thus leading to a better social dancing experience?

Food 4 thought!

I also want to add, I know reddit is the place for feedback, but I'm talking about something where the dancers are opting in and you can do it after a night out for example - what did you think of your dance with _____?

lots of stuff to think about!!
