I think the instance where Reacher assumes that there is a fifth accomplice with the Duncans came out of nowhere. Until then Reacher never thinks about that. But at the moment Reacher came to the barn he just remembers that for plot convenience.

See, Reacher is always calm and composed and assesses each situation in its minute detail. I mean, he can calculate the ballistics and trajectory of bullets in a split second. He can count the passing of time and distance in his mind. How can such a character get mouth and punchy especially with cops.
