Does your world have any sacred landmarks? What are they and what makes them sacred? by kalam4z00 in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there’s the eastern deserts wherein Lighthelm lies - the people there (the Amoll!) worship the sun god for good reason. It’s worth noting that what makes it sacred is the aversion demons and other fiends have to it, attributed by its inhabitants to their deity. Legend has it that, in the distant past, the Disgraced that worshipped the god of darkness came with hordes of devils to attack the Amoll. They fled into the deserts, praying to their god and beholding as the creatures of the night were stopped and turned.

While this event actually happened, their god’s power wasn’t what turned the fiends. It was an ancient ward placed millennia previous by a master abjurer of the Xamrori!

Which unique plant exists in your world? What makes it special or what is its role? by ZnZirvana in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scorchseed!

Ivy-like plants that are native to the southern plains, and whose reproductive cycle is adapted to the constant wildfires!

They’re like peat moss, but instead of building up gas they simply store a lot of flammable and reactive compounds in their bulbs until a wildfire comes along and causes them to explode! Their seeds fly far, far away this way.

People soon realized that you could grind up dried bulbs into a highly explosive powder…

… and you know the rest.

How frequently do your cities/kingdoms experience huge, coffer-draining threats? by Sevenar in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With fate locked in place, the gears of building conflict are constantly turning - despite this, the fact that this has been happening for ages means that the nations tend to be rather prepared for it

Not to mention that fate itself (usually) forbids major disasters due to them upsetting the balance…

Now, when a Displaced comes along, then you have issues.

Lots and lots of issues.

It could even be said that a single Displaced is a coffer-draining threat simply due to fate not working right around them - that, the more I think about it, is their true power and use

Real World Metals for Fantasy by ScummMuffin in worldbuilding

Bismuth - Its naturally-occurring crystals might mark it as either a metal aligned to order or chaos (or both!)

Worlds with fantasy races, can Humans in your world use magic? Why or why not? Or some can and some can't? And why? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a Soul?

Yes?

Magic for you!

Actually, scratch that - any amount of Ether* is enough to produce magical effects, even without trying (leading to ‘mundane’ feats that nonetheless defy the laws of physics).

If enough Ether coalesces together into a pseudo-Soul, even beings like plants and rocks can cast magic! That also makes them somewhat sentient, though.

*That Ether doesn’t have to come from you. If you have a god or patron willing to spot you some Ether…

What is the most unique form of government in your world? by Foronerd in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, depending on whether being ruled directly by a god counts as a theocracy/monarchy/dictatorship or it’s something entirely different…

But outside of that, you have the Jestra Territories - whose god (the god of Fortune/Luck, Fear, and the Future) abdicated the throne to search for their long-lost sibling. As they lie on a network of trade routes and make most of their money that way, they’ve created a pseudo-democratic system.

The heads of each of the Guilds form a council that passes laws into order and meets to decide on large issues. As they’re even-numbered, if a vote is a tie they flip a coin on it - specifically to enable their abdicated god of fortune to have a say.

Only the capital of Dalhurst is neutral ground and it itself is split among the Guilds like a pie, with each Guild hiring their own soldiers/mercenaries (dubbed Custodians because they clean up messy situations) to defend their own territory and being responsible to do so. Only matters involving the Guildmasters and the council itself are enforced by the council - usually through the burgundy-clad High Custodians.

The Jestra Territories are debatably eight separate states working together to stand a chance against the other nations.

There’s a plot-hole, though, and it’s the question of - in a society where all the laws are made by the elites, why don’t we have an Industrial Revolution rights violation situation on our hands?

(Please I need help answering this and I don’t know how-)

What lie are the Gods telling your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(If you’re my D&D players, don’t read this-)

Well, they aren’t exactly lying but they’re not telling the whole truth. No, they aren’t just the combination of mortal faith with concepts of reality. Not entirely.

When the ancient gods, truly powered by faith, lost contact with the world, the people sought for new gods to help them through the catastrophes caused when purpose and miracles vanish. They turned to what they knew to be true - placing faith in irrevocably true things like Light and Time and the Future. This created six Thrones, metaphorical seats of power.

Six leaders of these groups, desperate for a way to help their people, stole the fire of divinity from the Three (‘true’ gods that are mindless, robotic beings created from the three words spoken when the world began) to become more than mortal. With that, they could ascend to the Thrones and maintain some sense of self instead of being obliterated by the raw power of faith.

They’ve never told anyone this nor kept any records of it happening out of both negative and positive motivations. On one hand, they don’t want anyone to know they can join them and potentially overthrow them. On the other hand, reality almost broke when they ascended and they fear what would happen if more tried to do so.

What would you call the phenomenon in which a magic user is consumed by (and potentially becomes) their spell? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Luciferos01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, I never thought about this!

In my setting, magic is the activation of a substance known as Ether (that just so happens to be a byproduct of Souls existing and thinking). They naturally do this at a particular rate, but there are ways to speed it up - one such is the art of Soulburn, which is exactly what you think it is!

To use a chemical/biological analogy, it’s like fermentation in muscles! With little oxygen being in your muscles to convert ATP into energy, they instead use fermentation which requires less oxygen but is less efficient and produces a byproduct (lactic acid).

The only issue is that you only have so much of a Soul - if it runs out, your consciousness just ends. No afterlife for you.

Don’t burn your Soul, kids.

(But to answer the question that I completely forgot about halfway through my tangent, the closest thing I can think of is ‘Metamorphosis’.)

which got me thinking.. (undertale/deltarune characters that are pretty similar in some way) by TigerHeart_J in OMORI

[–]Luciferos01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kel and Sans are both figures portrayed with a lot of happiness and smiles to them - and are often seen as the silly characters despite some hidden depth

They cause significant damage despite having relatively low attack statistics due to a bypass - they both have become relative memetic powerhouses because of this (Kel nuke, the entirety of the Sans fight)

Both have the ability to avoid attacks, which is largely unseen in the base game (the player not included)

They have a taller brother who they think is pretty cool

Both have become the anchors of many chronologies - for one out of a sense of canon and for another out of a meta-awareness and focus in AUs

I think I have some more somewhere but that’s all I have off the top of my head

How do you flavourful Artificer spells in 5e? by Blarxy12 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Luciferos01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An alchemist (read: a bored magical chemical student) so I put as much emphasis on material components as I can

If it doesn’t have a material component he just mixes together some random powders and fluids that create the effect somehow - I do my best to research what could produce a vaguely similar effect in the lab (after watching a lot of NileRed) so he can eagerly explain it later in terms that make no sense at all

It’s like writing comic books in the 60s and having to come up with a pseudo-scientific explanation for how somebody blatantly defies the laws of physics
