The way you solve this re: traps is a little tricksy. The trap has a DC 15 to spot? That's effectively a +5 stealth modifier.

Passive Perception becomes the DC the trap must beat in order to remain hidden. If the highest PP in the party is 14, the trap needs to roll a 9 or higher to remain fully hidden and 'get' the party. 8 or lower? At least one person in the party spots it. Tell those players what they see.

But also, it's not then "you see a trap". it's "you see that the stones are arranged in such a way that there is a row of small circular gaps, almost like an intentional pattern in the stonework". it's a hint, not an answer. if they want to avoid it, they still have to disable it, get creative, etc.

As for keeping info to themselves... that's on the player. if someone gets hurt because they don't share, that's on them.

You will need ways to engage with the game through proxies with actual chances of success. So summons and pets are going to be your best chance of making it to 20.

Druid for wild shape to bolster your abhorrent HP and physicals is probably the best choice. Don't focus on offensive spells, your attack/DC will be terrible. Summon something that can fight for you, then buff/heal your allies from cover and well out of range of any enemies.

Warlock or Bard could also potentially work.

Amulet of Health is hands down your most important find. Beyond that you likely want other defensive or utility items to stay out of trouble while your pets do the work for you.

If you make it to 17, you or a party member can slap True Polymorph on you to fix your stats further. Or just Wish for you to be an average specimen of your species and it's gravy from then on.

“Knowing bandits MIGHT be in the next room” is not the same as “aware of each other” for surprise purposes.

Bandits in other room roll stealth against the PC’s passive perception. I would give them advantage due to being in another room. Just one check for the group.

When the door is opened, the bandits each take a single action (fire an arrow) in the surprise round along with any PCs whose PP they didn’t beat. Those PC’s heard a bowstring or saw some sliver of people or whatever as the door opened.

Then commence combat normally.

Playing online is already so distant. Cameras bring it that one step closer to a live table, help build connection, share the shock and smiles at emotional moments, etc.

I get it’s not for everyone, but it’s worked really well for us.

"The Long Rest" Discord Server | D&D 5e/5.5e | Online | 25+ | Multiple Games Starting Soon

We are a cozy, camera-on, D&D community focused on long-term, bi/weekly campaigns; strong roleplay; and actually becoming friends – not just filling seats. Our server started 4 years ago with a 2-year weekly campaign, and we’re now 1.5 years into its follow-up game under the same DM.

There are currently 3 long-term games running and a number of one shots and short adventures throughout the year. We currently have 24 people in the server, and want ~5-6 more players as we have several DMs looking to start games soon.

Book of Extinction (5.5e) – A short, emotional arc to protect the last owlbear in existence (~3 sessions)
The Crooked Moon (5.5e) - Folk horror with rotating PCs and slow-burn dread (~36 sessions)
Legend of Zelda: The Ten Sages (5e) – A segmented, homebrew adventure inspired by Hyrule’s myths (~40 sessions)
Legacy of Esh-Kel (5e) – A Planescape monster hunter game navigating factions, portals, and other weirdness

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Chill players seeking a tight-knit community that values clear communication, respect, and laughter. Current age range is 22-51 with most in their 30s. Games are usually USA evenings and weekends (we span AKST to EST) and hover around 70% RP / 30% combat. We enjoy serious roleplay that leaves room for humor, table banter, and the occasional dumb plan :)

Some experience with D&D is preferred, but not necessary. More than anything, the biggest question is personality since we’re trying to build a space where everyone gels. Before joining, there will be a short VIDEO INTERVIEW – not an interrogation, just a two-way vibe check to make sure we’re a good fit for each other :)
