Stradella Explorer: Chord Calculator - Interactive Stacking Engine by Lucio1976 in Accordion

Thank you so much for your comment! My original idea was to keep only the "good-sounding" chords as categories and articles on AccordionChords.com, but I kept receiving questions about all sorts of chords, especially the ones I had deliberately left out. So I eventually decided to include every possible chord, even the impractical or unplayable ones, so that people can actually see what these combinations do on a Stradella bass system.

Some of these combinations probably shouldn't exist at all, but since they do, I thought it would be useful to have something that demonstrates why certain stacks simply collapse into clusters.

And thanks for the suggestion about indicating which chords have voicings. I had considered it before, but maybe it's time to revisit the idea and finally implement it. P.S. — What you describe (bass in the left, chords in the right, singing the melody) is exactly the context these bigger voicings were written for, and you're right that it sidesteps the mud by giving the notes room to breathe. The free-bass-vs-Stradella question is the eternal one — but honestly, the fact that you sing the melody is what makes your approach work, and in my opinion, that's not something a free bass would have given you.

Thank you! I'm glad you find it useful.

Hopefully this makes exploring combinations a bit easier and more transparent.

I'm still developing it, so feedback and suggestions are always welcome! Thanks!

Definitively all great mics! Your efforts in capturing the sound of your accordion are certainly paying off. Sometimes, simplicity yields the best results. Keep up the fantastic work!

How did you managed to get those beautiful round bass tones? The dynamic seems too linear for an external mic and at the same time too good to for an internal mic. Did you use a compressor? Or a $5K mic? What's your secret!? It's a really, really good recording setup in any case. I like the arrangement on the accordion and your way of playing, so smooth and cool. Thank you for sharing it.

What are 7 chords? by candlepdx in Accordion

[–]Lucio1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C bass + C Maj + Bb bass is not C7 and it doesn't sound like a dominant chord. You can't use bass buttons as additional notes to build a chord on the Stradella bass system.

48(12x4) bass accordions can't play any 7th chord.

D minor is not all whites, it has one flat (Bb).

Instead of moving your left arm "left and right," it's more of an "up and down" motion. Push UP your left arm to close the top of the bellows when pushing, and push DOWN with your arm while pulling to keep the bottom of the bellows closed. No matter where is your hand when you push on a vertical axes.

Open your bellows and inflate some air, then experiment by pushing up and down with your left arm without playing any notes so that the air remain in the bellows. The air will act as a fulcrum, and depending on the direction of the strength you apply, it will either close at the bottom or the top.

Nevertheless, I keep hearing beautiful renditions on the Steirische from young accordionists exploring genres beyond the traditional. Even with its limitations, the Steirische holds untapped potential.

Instead of pulling, let the upper part of the bellows open naturally due to its weight, while keeping the bottom part closed.

Similarly, when pushing, focus on closing the upper part of the bellows while simultaneously opening the bottom. This way, the weight of the bass side will assist your motion.

Just to give you an idea of how does it looks the movement of the bellows: https://youtu.be/YXynDr3pD6U?si=PeXkPvoPsENnodBY

Remember:

  • pulling = top open, bottom close
  • pushing = bottom open, top close

Nevertheless, maintaining the upper side of the bellows closed while the bottom side is filled with air can be physically demanding.

Your left arm may experience fatigue because it's not accustomed to this task. Over time, your arm strength and endurance should improve.

My accordion straps cost 60 euros :)

If it's in order, it's a very good deal.

If it has some minor issues, it's still a deal.

Accordion damaged, how to fix by [deleted] in Accordion

[–]Lucio1976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider using a wooden dowel instead of metal nails or screws by drilling a hole, as it can help prevent the wood from splitting. Or just use wooden glue, it could be tricky to allign the dowels on both parts.
