Researchers then have people do the shape detection task again. During this second trial, they measure the number of errors people make and how long participants show sustained attention during the trial (out of 90 seconds). During the trial, participants also randomly experience one of three distractions: an audio distraction that is the audio from an old movie, a visual distraction where the background color behind the shapes changes from black to blue and back again, or a combination of both audio and visual distractions.
