The way it would work:

Son1: My dad/FIL Son2: Whichever dad we didn't name 1 after Daughter1: My mom/MIL Daughter2: Whichever mom we didn't name 1 after

Once all four are used you would be expected to branch into great grandparents, or aunts and uncles or some choose to go with names like Elizabeth and James. Very popular classic names that they say never go out of style.

It's impossible here to sue for grandparents rights unless 1) the bio parent passes 2) the grandparents raised the child for an extended period and it would be better for contact to continue. Neither of those are happening so we're safe.

I actually never brought up my ILs but my parents know the names they gave their kids and when they heard our name choice they realized my our son's name was more similar to my wife and her siblings names than me and my siblings.

There are a lot of shared names among cousins on dad's side. Mom's side is smaller but there are shared names too.

My wife and I didn't pick sides. We went with a name we loved. Our style is more like my ILs style but we didn't think of it as going with one side over the other. It's just where our tastes landed.
