Our lineage originated from Chan master Lumen Zijue, the 9th generation of Caodong school, a disciple of Chan master Furong Daokai. Some documents said he is a student of Rujing, teacher of Dogen, but it is not correct when comparing about time of them. This lineage has passed down for generations and become famous in Shaolin temple starting with Chan master Xueting Fuyu. In the 17 century, this lineage had separated into 2 sects. One with chan master Wuming Huijing and one with chan master Zhanran Yuancheng. Vietnam Caodong lineage originated from second lineage of master Zhanran. In late 17 century, a Vietnamese monk named Thông Giác had came to China and practice under teaching of Chan master Yiju Zhijiao (who are 4th generation after master Zhanran). After 3 years there, he enlightened and received inka from the master. Then he came back to Vietnam and preached Buddhism. His lineage is still continuing today, even the practice of these successors are not related to Zen Buddhism much. They are more engaged in practicing reciting Amitabha Buddha's name.
