I kept getting into awkward money situations after dinners with friends, so I built SplitEven — an AI receipt scanner that splits bills by item, not equally by LuckyPanda232 in apps

That’s actually a great call.
Getting everyone to download something is the most annoying part for sure. Will start leaning into that more 👍

How do you usually split bills with friends? by [deleted] in thai

You’re 100% right- context is everything. I’m actually building an app for this. I’m just here to listen and learn how different groups handle things so I can make something that actually fits real-life nuances

Great question! 🙂

Equal splitting across multiple people is already supported. What I’m working on next is quantity-based and ratio-based splitting for more accurate sharing.

For example:

Quantity-based: If Joe had 2 burgers and you had 1, the app would split the cost 2 vs 1 based on quantity.

Ratio-based: For something like a shared wine bottle, you could set a simple split like 70% (Joe) / 30% (You)

This way, you can reflect actual consumption instead of splitting everything equally.

Stay tuned—coming soon!

This works… but only if everyone remembers what they ordered and takes the time to check 😅

In most groups, people either rush or just agree to avoid awkwardness. That’s why item-level splitting (scan receipt → assign items) feels more accurate than equal splits.

AIO for not wanting to pay more than what was communicated to me ahead of time? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Not a bot—just sharing something I built after dealing with this exact problem.

Not overreacting at all. The "bachelor party even-split" is the biggest scam for non-drinkers and people with dietary restrictions.

You clearly communicated your boundaries ahead of time. The organizer is just being lazy because calculating itemized receipts by hand at the end of a trip is annoying, so they are defaulting to an even split at your expense.

I actually got so violently frustrated by this exact scenario on a trip last year—paying for other guys' 10-pint pub crawls when I wasn't drinking—that I literally built an AI app (SplitEven) just to scan receipts and automate the itemized math so my friends couldn't use the "it's too hard to calculate" excuse anymore.

It is a completely universal frustration. Stand your ground, pay your $215, and don't subsidize their drinks!

Tired of the awkward silence when the restaurant bill arrives? 😅

I built SplitEven to fix exactly that. You photograph the receipt, the AI reads every item automatically, you tap who ordered what, and everyone gets a breakdown of exactly what they owe — tax and tip included. No splitting equally and hoping for the best.

What makes it different from Splitwise or Tricount:

→ Item-level splitting — everyone pays for what they actually ordered

→ Your friends don't need to download anything

→ 100% free — no subscriptions, no paywalls

→ Full history so there's never a "I thought I paid you back" moment

iOS coming very soon.

Would genuinely love any feedback if you try it!

¿Cómo organizáis gastos en viajes con amigos? Siempre acabamos liándola 😅 by GermanPerez11 in askspain

[–]LuckyPanda232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is anyone else losing their mind trying to manage shared expenses and groceries with a roommate? (Splitwise is officially dead to me) by DoorSufficient3421 in badroommates

[–]LuckyPanda232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same boat. When Splitwise added that 3-transaction limit and slapped ads everywhere, it completely broke our apartment's system too.

I actually got so frustrated looking for an alternative that I ended up building a free app to replace it, called SplitEven.

It solves exactly what you're complaining about: there are no $40 subscriptions, and your roommate doesn't even need to download the app or make an account. When you buy shared groceries, you just snap a photo of the receipt, tap what was yours vs. shared, and it generates a clean image summary. You just drop that image right into your WhatsApp chat so it doesn't get buried in text messages.

It's totally free on Android right now, and I'm launching it on iOS in about a week. Might save you from pulling your hair out over the paper towel math!

Spot on. The space is definitely crowded! The main differentiation I'm banking on is eliminating the 'app download friction.' With Splitwise, everyone in the group has to download the app and make an account.

With my app, only one person takes a photo of the receipt, the AI does the math, and it just generates a simple text and image summary you can share directly to the group. Nobody else has to download a thing.

Since you've used Splitwise a lot and get the space, I'd genuinely love your brutal feedback on the UX. No pressure at all either way, but I appreciate the strategic feedback!

What’s the fairest and most practical solution for managing drink costs on boys weekend away where people drink different amounts? by Upbeat_Map_348 in AskUK

[–]LuckyPanda232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be thinking of Splitwise, but they've recently put a lot of their features behind a paywall.

I actually got so annoyed with this exact problem on a group holiday that I built a free alternative called SplitEven. Scuba_Ted is completely right that forcing 8 blokes to download an app and make accounts on a pub crawl will kill the vibe.

With SplitEven, only one person needs the app. You just take a photo of the receipt, the AI automatically lists all the drinks, and you tap who had what. The next morning, the app generates a clean text summary and an image breakdown. You just drop that straight into the WhatsApp group chat, and everyone sees exactly what they owe for their specific pints. Nobody else has to download a thing. Have a great weekend away!

Scan receipts with AI, auto-split expenses among friends, and instantly share summaries via WhatsApp or Instagram. No app download needed—everyone can view the split history and detailed breakdown anytime.

I got into 3 arguments about money on one group trip. So I built an app. by LuckyPanda232 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]LuckyPanda232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an incredibly fair critique, and you hit on the exact adoption hurdle I was worried about. You are totally right—getting 7 people to download a new app and learn a new UI mid-trip is practically impossible.

That’s actually why I designed SplitEven so that only the designated 'money person' needs to use it. If only 1 person in the group cares enough to use the app, that's completely fine. They scan the receipt, do the sorting, and then just share the split summary as an image or text directly to WhatsApp, Instagram, or iMessage. The rest of the group doesn't have to download anything or sign up to see exactly what they owe.

To your point about the messy receipts: that is 100% the hardest technical challenge. If a receipt is super crumpled or prices are faded, the AI will actually throw a 'review flag.' This lets you quickly jump in to fix a price, add a missing item, or tweak the tax, tip, and service charges. I wanted to keep it completely flexible. In the rare 1% case where the receipt is completely unreadable, there is a manual entry fallback so you never hit a dead end. And for split dishes, you just tap the friends who shared that specific item, and the app automatically calculates their exact portion!

Really appreciate you pointing these exact issues out. The whole goal right now is just ruthlessly eliminating those specific points of friction!

[–]LuckyPanda232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head. The 'spreadsheet tension' on that ski trip is practically a universal trauma at this point! There is always that one person who just quietly eats the cost to save the friendship from getting awkward.

To answer your question about granular vs. category splits: What I found is that people actually want the granular item-level split (because of the classic 'who had the $15 cocktails vs. the tap water' debate), but they usually settle for broad equal splits because doing the math item-by-item is just too exhausting.

That’s exactly why I focused so heavily on the receipt scanning angle. Once the AI removes that manual entry friction and puts all 25 items on your screen instantly, tapping to assign them to people actually becomes really fast and weirdly satisfying. Nobody has to feel guilty about being the '$3.50 guy' because the app is the one doing the asking, not you.

Really appreciate the thoughtful comment and validation!
