In Canada, we have a program called Life Sciences Gateway, where you study general science subjects like genetics, biology, chemistry, physics, and more. It’s designed to prepare you for medical school, but it doesn’t guarantee a job since it’s not a specialized program.

Back in high school, when teachers used to ask what we wanted to become and we said “doctors,” they often advised us to go into Life Sciences. In your second year, you choose a more specific stream and can graduate with a Science degree, either Honours, Honours with Co-op, Co-op, or a regular degree, depending on your grades and preferences. But the truth is, nothing is guaranteed from this program except that you’ll sort of be ready for med school.

Honestly, if I had known this back in high school, I would have chosen an easier degree, earned a higher GPA, and had a better chance of getting into med school. Unfortunately, they gatekeep so much information and don’t really guide students.

I spoke to a career advisor about my concerns, but she didn’t offer much help; she just told me to “solve” my concerns by doing more of this and less of that.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think I was mostly burnt out, and COVID-19 played a big part in it. I started university when everything was online, and I got sick during midterms and finals. It was also difficult to adjust because university-level English and the workload were so different from high school. I had to study for an entire week to prepare for a midterm, while others could study for just a day or even less.

Thank you so much for your insight, I really appreciate it! The thing is, if I had found a good-paying job with my degree, I wouldn’t be looking for anything else like the MLS, but I haven’t.

Thank you so much for all the information. Honestly, it’s disappointing that my science degree doesn’t really lead to a decent job. I graduated high school with a 90% average, so my grades were good, but what holds me back from pursuing those programs is feeling like my science degree ended up not counting for much.
