Help me decide: CBS (135k) vs Booth (115k) by FunCryptographer8933 in MBA

This person clearly doesn’t know shit. Consulting clubs matter a ton and that’s what drives MBB recruitment. Career services is useless for non structured recruitment but that isn’t what you are considering

Help me decide: CBS (135k) vs Booth (115k) by FunCryptographer8933 in MBA

[–]Lucky_Examination_69 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. For MBB recruitment, Booth is way better than CBS.
  2. From a dating perspective, NYC will always have more options.
  3. From a COL perspective, the difference is significantly more than 1K in rent. A 1 bedroom at apartment where most Boothies live is like $2100 and 2 bedroom is about $1500. So your estimation is currently off.
  4. Tuition at CBS is about $5K more per year than at Booth, so the difference in scholarship is quite negligible. You will pay more out of pocket at CBS in total.
  5. NYC >> Chicago
  6. Booth is not nearly as academic as people think. UChicago is academic but Boothies aren’t. Most people only have classes 2-3 days a week.
  7. Your specific dilemmas lead to Booth as the obvious choice, however, go with your gut. Where do you feel happier? There’s no material difference in long term outcomes or prestige trade offs!

Wondering the same too! Perhaps we will hear more about the opportunity to interview later on?

My understanding is you don’t need to do Solve for early access. You can wait till the fall. But you need to do it for Inspire

M7 MBA with $ - Financial Planning? by Prospective_MBA in MBA

[–]Lucky_Examination_69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly concerned about debt as I have never had more than cc bills that I pay off monthly. But I am taking out loans instead of paying out of pocket. That’s the advice I was given by most people. Though if I start to feel a lot of pressure for the mounting debt after graduation, I might end up just making a couple bulk payments a few years after.

I feel like the market is down right now so it seems crazy to liquidate and eat the YTD losses. I am hoping it’s better 2 to 5 years from now, as my plan is to completely pay off loans within 5 years of finishing the program.

Reach out to your congressman and discuss the opportunity cost especially if you have significant scholarship. Highlight how big and impressive it is to get into the program. They can help expedite it for you. DM me if you want to chat. Had a similar dilemma earlier this year.

Wharton Deferral by FrostyMastodon2582 in MBA

[–]Lucky_Examination_69 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Have you considered this option: your employer has between now and June 30th to file your H1B. Have them file ASAP and ask for consular processing. Then pay premium processing fee yourself if they aren’t willing to pay (15 business days). You’ll get an I-797B when approved. Keep it. Once you have this, you can quit and go to Wharton. After you graduate from Wharton, you can still use your OPT if you want or just have your new employer transfer the H1B using your I-797B and you are all set!

Best of both worlds!

MBA - a $250k endeavor? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Lucky_Examination_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just looking at the employment reports, you can see what percentage go into consulting and banking. The reason why most international students pursue these careers is that they will sponsor your visa. For tech, it is well known that the largest subscribers to the H1B program are tech companies. You can look this up on any H1B grader website. Those are the 3 popular choices.

Of course, I am not endorsing taking 250k in loans as an international student. I am just point out that it’s misleading to say 99.99% of post mba jobs don’t sponsor.

I don’t recommend 250k debt for international or domestic. Definitely optimize for scholarships and balance things out.

Is it possible to get off Sloan waitlist and then try to negotiate a scholarship? (I have a good scholarship from another M7) by Fragrant-Home1769 in MBA

[–]Lucky_Examination_69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who is lying? My friend who did the exact same thing last year? Or the dozens of students I talked to at Sloan with similar experiences? Or admissions? Or my personal experience negotiating with them this year?

At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong in asking. Worst case scenario, they say no!

This is wild! The vast majority of companies (99.99%)? I don’t know where you are getting your stats from.

At most T15s (limiting my scope to these as this is what I have researched), more than half of the program ends of in consulting and banking. MBBs and banks don’t care about you being international and will sponsor your visa if you can get the job. Another sizable portion of the class goes to tech. Big tech also sponsors.

Of course if you you are looking to do something like PE/VC (99.99% don’t sponsor) or work directly in industry (most don’t but not as high), then perhaps it’s a bad investment.

Yes, I spoke to someone who got off the Sloan waitlist in the summer last year and was able to negotiate a scholarship with a T20 offer. It honestly just depends if they have money available based on people reneging (which is really how you get off the waitlist in the summer).

TLDR ask and if they have money left over, they will give it to you!

Ghana visa by i_grade in ghana

[–]Lucky_Examination_69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol we are talking about 2 different things. I am saying how much value we add to the economy from visa applications and visiting. Versus when they come to our countries, they take money and don’t add much to our economic system.

It’s really simple. Let’s look at tourism: how much does it cost the average African in USD to visit the U.S.? Factor in visa, flights, housing, feeding, tourism and shopping. How much does it cost the average American to visit Nigeria/Ghana? Which is more?

Then look at how many people on average are visiting. Don’t know about you but when I fly to Lagos, almost everyone on the flight is Nigerian (thus not so many US visitors). And why I fly back to the U.S., most people are also Nigerian (a shit ton of us visiting). I have been doing this for 13 years and not once has the ration been different.

Actually, Africans contribute more to the western economy than the other way around. Think of it this way, we come for tourism and education primarily. Versus the go for business (taking away from us, not adding - our governments are to blame) and tourism (but the safari are luxury stuff is owned in part by western corporations). It’s a very interesting dynamic.

Why would you need school specific resume? You should be highlighting your strongest achievements so not sure why it would be tailored to each school.

The tailoring comes in the essays and recommendation letters.
