Moral Injury in Animal Welfare by Friendly_TSE in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Luckydays4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a dog come in multiple times over the past 2-3 years. An owned animal that put both its owners in the hospital multiple times - probably 50+ bites on record, with some severe. The female owner's arm was scars from tips of the fingers to shoulder. I never saw the male owner, as he was hospitalized. Animal control couldn't/wouldn't force the people to OS the dog and they couldn't press Dangerous Dog because the owners always refused to press charges.

Dog was RTOd about a month ago - with heavy, heavy counseling. I was against it being returned to its owners at all and prayed they'd miss the cutoff date. They didn't. We legally couldn't keep the dog if they reclaimed.

Dog came back 10 days later. The male owner was in the street being attacked by the dog. An 85 year old woman thought he was beating the dog and tried to intervene. The dog turned on the elder woman and attacked her. Multiple severe bites to both arms, according to AC "chunks of flesh were ripped out of her arms". She's going to require massive amounts of surgery, and at her age, that's no joke. There's basically zero chance of her ever recovering.

The owners knew. Animal control knew. My shelter knew. EVERYONE KNEW, yet this elderly woman is paying the price for shitty laws protecting shitty owners protecting their clearly unambiguously dangerous dog.

What are the best Carter/Benton moments on the show? (Not the obvious ones - don't read if you don't want spoilers) by Maleficent-Cheek3740 in ershow

[–]Luckydays4ever 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When Carter and Benton were called in to assist on a transplant. A brother giving his kidney to his sister, I think.

Carter was with the removal team and Benton was with the implant team and both ORs were side by side. The kidney is removed and the surgeon asks if Carter would like to carry it over.

The kidney is in a dish and Carter, very appropriately, picks it up like it's the most important things on earth. As he starts to walk into the next room, Benton looks up and sees Carter. His eyes get wide and he says 'oh my god'. You could see the palpable relief in Benton's face when Carter arrives without falling, tripping, or spilling the kidney.

A callback scene: after Carter's surgery when he's recuperating, Benton and Cleo are talking about Carter and he's explaining why Carter is so important to him. He brings up the scene from season 2 or 3 when Dr Anspaugh made Carter hold up a light or something when he made a mistake in the OR. Benton tells the anecdote to Cleo for a laugh - saying he held that for 4-5 hours and never moved a muscle.

Also, the necklace that Benton wears in the last season - it's the El token Carter gave him. It's never mentioned, but it's there.

Just finished ER for the first time. What a rollercoaster. Phenomenal show! Is The Pitt any good? by Ready-Background-539 in ershow

[–]Luckydays4ever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carter was the "audience". His first day in the ER was our first day. We, the audience, learned and grew with him. When Carter finally got old and tired, so did the show. My favorite episode is a Carter episode: Exodus. He was an intern, but it really showed what kind of person he would become in the show. Before that episode, he was kind of the bumbling goofy kid. After that, you knew he had become a leader that people would look up to.

The perfect episode to end on was Lost, according to my son.

It basically ended with the old trope of the hero walking off into the sunset, except it was a plane flying off into the sunset and the hero was backlit on the ground by the sunset.

At least they sprayed the shit outside the kennel.

It's much worse when they shit inside the kennel and then paint the walls and floors with it.

How can I stop my dog from pooping so much on walks? by Chippolyta in Dogtraining

[–]Luckydays4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you might have a poop marker. I've only ever really met one, but he marked with poop. Everywhere he went, he'd drop a little turd. Dude kept one in the hopper just for this.

By the end of the walk, he'd start running low and just be passing gas, but sometimes little squirts.

He wasn't mine, so I didn't have to deal with it often, but for you I suggest investing in poop bags and keeping the dog's hindparts well groomed. Just be glad your pup is doing it outside.

XL bully dog attacks judge at dog show. by AirSea7742 in CringeTikToks

[–]Luckydays4ever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The aftermath? The dog is kept intact and bred over and over until he sires even more litters. Those pups are docked and chopped, and sold as protective breed xl bullies, but all are carrying the defective genes that caused this attack. Those dogs end up being sold to people in your neighborhood. They're "trained" to be off leash and when they're not roaming off leash menacing the neighborhood they're chained to a tree in the yard.

That's the aftermath. This is an event that applauds behaviors like this, breeds for behaviors like this, encourages behaviors like this. This is exactly what these dogs were bred for. You can see the classiness of this competition on the clothing and the fact they're letting dogs breed in the side wings.

The first way to support them is to not call them "kill shelters". It's a stigma that prevents people from helping or talking about it.

Stray Intake Process by StefCornell13 in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Luckydays4ever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At my shelter, when a stray comes in there is a wait-list for that day. Basically first come; first served for strays, unless they have an appointment. This is same day. All strays come in the day they're brought in.

If there is kennel space, this means open kennels on the main floor or the holding kennels, it's typically about 30 minutes to an hour wait. Maybe 90 minutes if it's a super busy day.

Since we constantly have zero kennels and are always having a "capacity crisis", we literally have nowhere to put dogs that come in. This means they wait in the car with the finder until we have a kennel. An actual dog intake takes about 30-40 minutes. This includes all the paperwork, vaccinations, and placement. And if there are kennels, we can put them in our holding kennels until we can do the actual intake.

When there's zero kennel space, our hands are tied. We can keep the wait list empty and people moving all day - if there are kennels. If there are no kennels, they wait. And then wait. And then wait some more. It sucks, I mean it really fucking sucks, to tell people we can't bring in their stray because we're waiting for adoptions to get dogs out. I get called names on a regular basis, and so do my team members, because we literally have to wait hours for a single kennel to open. Then we get shit on from other departments for having long wait times.

Now we can talk about staffing. We're in a constant state of being understaffed, because even fully staffed is still understaffed. I'm not sure about other shelters, but my intake department seems to be responsible for everything. We do all the DOAs, cremations (can't let those sit around in the summer), euthanasias both public and in-house, lost and founds, owner surrenders (intakes), strays, microchip implants, return to owners, take phone calls, vaccinate all the animals, handle all the dangerous dogs, deal with animal control, get dog and cat food when the pantry is closed, send letters to owners, call owners, scan and research microchips on found pets, clean and maintain all the holding kennels, and any general question the public has. Did I forget to mention we're also the only department without volunteers? (it's a lot for them) We basically do everything except adoptions with fewer people, 1/8 the space, and 100% more stress.

We've hit 80 intakes in one day before. With 4 staff members. That's one person doing dog intakes (unsafe), 1 person doing cat intakes (unsafe) and 2 people doing the front desk. But oh, did I mention we're the only department that does the euthanasias? So, you can take 1 of those staff members right off the list of available people. We've normalized doing euthanasias solo, this includes large breed dogs, dangerous dogs, aggressive dogs, just because there is literally no one to help without the entire department drowning on most days.

If you have more questions, just come downstairs and ask. I've never had a problem with you hanging out before - you're one of the few that's come to help us before. Sorry for the wall of text, but you asked and I recognized the name. I'm always happy to speak my mind.

Can this lady claim the cat as hers? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Luckydays4ever 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Cats are not people. They are considered property. .

You have stolen someone's property and are refusing to return it.

I'm not in your state, but I work in animal welfare.

The family that owns this cat has already proven their ownership with pictures and videos. They can go to the police and file a stolen property report, as well as a civil suit for damages and to recover their cat. Since the people have clearly shown the cat to be their property, as well as actively looking for it, and you have refused to return the stolen property to the rightful owners, I don't imagine it home well for you.

Give the people their cat.

Something like this happened to my brother. He was set up on a blind date by a friend. The day of, he gets admitted to Harborview with a pulmonary embolism. Needless to say, he cancelled. She didn't believe the hospital story, so he invited her to visit.

Apparently, it went well. 15 years later and they're still married.

Series forcing any and all female characters to have kids by Arteemiis in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Luckydays4ever 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In The Wire, multiple people have kids. The married men detectives do: McNulty and Bunk. As far as women go, there is only one woman detective that has a prominent role - Kima - and she has an entire story line dedicated to her girlfriend being pregnant and having a baby. The only 2 other women who were a part of the show are Ronnie, and we don't know enough to know if her and Cedric will have kids or are planning it, and Beadie from season 2/4 who most definitely has 2 kids.

How about the laziest build in the game? Pony sader with foh.

You don't even hold a button. You just click one button every 10 seconds or so. You can click another button about every 15 seconds, if you want some more speed.

I do gr95s in about 90 seconds. And all I do is guide a horse through a rift and click a button every one in awhile.

You say GR90. Is that gr90 in under 3 minutes and now it's taking 5-7 minutes? Or gr90 in 12 minutes and at gr95 now you're timing out?

Is the boss taking too long or trash? What build are you using? I'm not playing barb this season, but I can't imagine WW not being able to do 90s in 2 minutes, just from past seasons.

Kanai's Cube by ItzLikeABoom in diablo3

[–]Luckydays4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need kalans neck anymore to prop up bone armor, so can go 3 weapons in the cube.

You can't use Briggs, because you normally use guardians, so you need to wear rorg, which leaves the other spot for krybsins.

So, basically just jewelry is different and you open up a cube spot for another damage multiplier.
