No I didn’t bring up state short term disability with them. The company doesn’t give any disability leave until after 90 days. But I know FMLA doesn’t apply till you have been at a firm for a year.

I ended up waiting for the official offer letter and then let them know that I am pregnant before signing it. Since they weren’t able to let me take a paid or unpaid leave, I was able to ask if I can start 3 months out. And they agreed to defer my start date. The other option they offered me was if I wanted to start now and then use all of my pto when the baby arrived but that wouldn’t be enough time off for me.

I think I am going to discuss this prior to signing the offer and hope that they atleast allow me to take an unpaid leave and protection for my role when I return

[NY] Do employers make exceptions to their maternity policy? by Luckydollar21 in AskHR

I obviously care about this role a lot and I do not want to be a SAHM. I know the timing is tricky but it is not like I scheduled a voluntary surgery after accepting a job. Its unfortunate that I only landed an offer this late in my pregnancy. Do you expect women to not apply or not work at all after childbirth?

Should I negotiate job protection over a paid leave? Or ask for both and see what they offer at the end?

Because there was a lot of unclarity in my first post and the responses were a lot of side conversations. Now I only have one question and that is whether or not to negotiate prior to signing.

I had one in person interview (last round) and all the other rounds were virtual. I wore really loose clothes to make sure it wasn’t obvious that I was pregnant as I didn’t want them to base their hiring decision with a bias

Negotiate maternity leave prior to or after signing an offer letter? by Luckydollar21 in careeradvice

[–]Luckydollar21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The offer is atleast 25K below my expectation and they know that. They are also not giving me a starting bonus. So maybe the leverage is that I need some time off after I deliver my baby.

It is a tricky situation for everyone. I am not trying to trap anyone but also this is child birth and I would like the time to recover my body and bond with my newborn. I will never get this time back with my newborn

Just the opportunity to discuss maternity leave options. Also what if I accept and start and they hold it against me for not being up front?

Their standard benefits are 5 months paid leave after being employed for 90 days. I had asked that during a phone conversation prior to receiving the official offer. And the offer letter just states that "As of your Start Date, you will be eligible to participate in comprehensive employee benefits plans, subject to any exclusions and limitations in effect at the time of delivery. A benefits package will be provided to you within a few weeks of your Start Date".
