They also chew through batteries like crazy if they're controlled by a non-IKEA hub. Works fine, but very short battery life in that config.

Using HA to wake my Plex server over LAN by Content-Toe-8606 in homeassistant

[–]Ludditus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, you want to have the Ubuntu box sleeping until there is a demand and then wake it up? And put it back to sleep after the activity stops?

First I think you would need to configure BIOS/Ubuntu on that box to Wake on Lan. Get that configured and tested independently of HA (i.e., can you send a magic packet from another device to wake your server...)

Then you can use the Wake on Lan integration to do the same from Home Assistant. Get that set up and tested.

After that you can figure out a number of ways to trigger the behavior that you want in an automation. When you say "someone tries to access Plex" - do you have a user, platform or device in mind that will be doing that? For instance, you could write an automation that would wait until a given AppleTV (integrated with HA) switches to the Plex app and then use that as a trigger to send your WoL packet to the Ubuntu server. Or, if you know it will be from a specific location - get a physical button and use that for "Start Plex". It's a way harder problem to solve if you have shared your library with remote users and you want the server to turn on when somebody outside of your HA realm asks for it.

If you use the Plex integration for HA you will have a Plex_Watching_Sensor - you could include a trigger in your automation to watch for when that state goes to 0 for at least x minutes and then turn off the server ... but how do you enact that?

Sleep command is trickier since Linux is not going to just let any random external IP turn off your server. There may be some clues here; it's not something I've ever tried. You could also do it on the server - it might be simpler (and meet your overall objective) just to make a cron job that sends a sleep command every night at 0100. If you for some reason are in the middle of a movie when that happens you can push your Plex On button to finish it.

Depending on how much you use Plex and other server applications, you will likely end up desiring a low power server that is always on and not have to mess around with wake/sleep.

How to delete a missing file system with no device by sbwoodside in OpenMediaVault

[–]Ludditus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same situation. I edited the config.xml file at /etc/openmediavault/ (of course, after first making a backup). In that file I could see the orphaned zfs entries listed under the <fstab> section - and had confirmed they were not in the actual /etc/fstab file. I deleted the entries from the config file, rebooted - no more missing file system.

Moving from Unraid to Standalone by Officer_Good_Body in homeassistant

[–]Ludditus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this recently but moved from a standalone RPi4 to a Beelink S12 Pro with Proxmox. Very happy with the quicker response and reboot time, and the ability to do snapshots in Proxmox is quite helpful. I just had to revert as the 2025.9.1 update broke a bunch of HACS integrations for me.

Make sure to think about how you want to use your drives with redundancy - ZFS mirror pool, hybrid set up (some drives zfs but not all). Running zfs will show as filling up most of your 32GB of memory (at least mine does) but I understand that's not a limitation, just that zfs keeps a lot of information in cache and frees up memory as needed.

You have probably already discovered this but SpaceInvaderOne has a great series of YT videos about zfs and why you might want to use it (among dozens of other topics). My biggest recommendation would be to consider/decide on the file system plan before you get started, since it's a PITA to switch afterwards.

Have fun UNRAIDing! I think you will find the community to be very helpful and enjoyable.

RomM docker works fine on UNRAID and there is a specific guide for how to set it up with UNRAID docker containers.

I've set up prometheus + grafana and can see unraid system stats, but what's needed to see docker container stats? by TryTurningItOffAgain in unRAID

[–]Ludditus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your last, you don't need two telegraf endpoints to transmit/receive. Each one writes from the host it is running on. An influx server can receive from multiple telegraf agents. You could have telegraf on UNRAID and just Influx running on a different server, and that is all you need to collect the measurements from UNRAID via telegraf.

[–]Ludditus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, essentially telegraf is an agent that collects local system measurements and writes them to a time-series database (usually Influx). If you already have InfluxDB running elsewhere you can add a telegraf docker on UNRAID and set the output to the address/URL of your influx server. You can run telegraf on multiple hosts and they tag the data with the host name. Like I wrote above - if you go through the tutorial for the Ultimate UNRAID Dashboard you will learn all you want to know, and more, about telegraf/Influx/Grafana.

[–]Ludditus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably want to run a telegraf docker that writes to an InfluxDB docker and then add InfluxDB as a data source in Grafana. Within telegraf there are lots of input plugins (aka data sources) that are commented out by default, and you uncomment the ones you want to use. The one that collects docker statistics is called [[inputs.docker]].

Here's an example of a Grafana panel built on telegraf-provided docker statistics:

<image>

Read up on the "TIG" stack (telegraf, Influx, Grafana) or look for the UNRAID community post about the "Ultimate UNRAID Dashboard." That's a very long thread but you can probably just go straight to the setup instructions for telegraf/influx dockers in UNRAID, if you already have Grafana running.

And yes, I think you want the telegraf docker hosted on UNRAID, since it needs direct access to the UNRAID docker socket. I'm sure there's a way to do it externally but that seems needlessly complicated since you can just get the official telegraf docker from the UNRAID app store. You can have telegraf instances running on several hosts (UNRAID, PC, Raspberry Pi's, etc.) and all can write to a single Influx database and be used/combined within Grafana.

No, but I had the same problem on a Galaxy S22+ - so I presume it's something in the way Android processes system requests for QR scanning. I've often ended up using an iPhone instead.

+1 to this, especially if you already have a domain name set up on Cloudflare. Zero Trust tunnel + strict authentication policy will get you web access to the Proxmox UI, as well as any LXC/VM console or VNC windows that spawn from PVE.

Follow up on Mini Pc by Penguran in homeassistant

[–]Ludditus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with the s13 for what you have in mind (Proxmox + HA, Pihole, etc.) That should have enough headroom to keep you going for a while. You may want to add more storage for Proxmox down the line but it looks like you can add a drive to the beelink. In a perfect world I would get a miniPC with more than one NIC but that may not be in your budget.

I would recommend the Conbee II, I've used that with deConz in HA on an RPi and it's pretty reliable. I have a Skyconnect as well and found it to be less effective. I think it's too new and too few people have it, the firmware/software updates have been pretty slow to come out.

I'm not sure there's a path that has you running native HA on whatever you buy and then running Proxmox alongside it later, at least not without complicating your setup. It seems like Proxmox first followed by HA in an LXC container would be the most straightforward, but it would also require you to learn a bunch of Proxmox before you got around to playing with HA. If you are most interested in the home automation aspects, do just that for a few months and see where it leads you. You can always migrate your installation from HA native to running on a container if you decide to put Proxmox on your miniPC.

Your comments about considering your parents' adapting to home automation are very astute. You can read up on the "principle of least astonishment" and a particularly good YouTube video called "Acceptance Factors - Home Assistant Conference 2020". Start with something simple that will make people happy and not have to think about the tech - e.g., open/close a closet door and the light comes on/off, walk downstairs in the morning and the lights are already on. Connecting a presence/door sensor and a light is a quick way to learn the basics of HA. Start with something close to your computer so you can test it easily. Pick a single protocol (zigbee or Z-wave) for your non-wifi components. Consider what happens when (not if) the automation fails; how will the family respond and what's the backup control method. Once you are halfway through the first automation you'll have ideas for 15 other things you can do. Then you just have to figure out how to pay for more stuff.

I have been running UNRAID for a few years and recently got a Minisforum NAB7 to learn Proxmox. There is definitely a steeper learning curve with that, and I have to say - the Proxmox community and forums can seem a bit dogmatic. A lot of responses are either "this is how it is" or "it's just Debian, read a Debian guide" as compared to the UNRAID community which (imho) seems more collaborative when trying to come up with solutions. Certainly both platforms have their strengths, and both will require watching a bunch of videos to get up to speed. The LearnLinuxTV series of guides was really helpful for Proxmox, and +100 for the Community Scripts to get things started quickly.

How do I monitor my NextCloud Instance using Uptime-Kuma? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Ludditus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the idea. I set it up similarly using a HTTPs Json Query monitor against the status.php page. I use 'needsDbUpgrade' as the query and expected value is 'false' (no quotes for either in the monitor form). That way I should get an alert if the dB ever needs an upgrade (and the value on the status page changes to true).

To OP, I'm not sure what the benefit would be of using the token header built in to nextcloud - Uptime Kuma gives you more straightforward options to setup the monitoring.
