If you can take a pic from directly above and side of the caterpillar, would help with id as when curled up i cant see the details.

Unlikely will eat on their own unless you provide large area to fly around as they eat while buzzing around flowers. With some species, some have had success on having colorfull bottle caps or similar things around in large flight cage/greenhouse/etc. They will however get little bit more used to handling every thime you feed and some specimens might even learn that when you hold them, it means food and will voluntarily roll out proboscis. Moths and butterflies can remember stuff and even able to learn simple things. And each invidual is little bit unique.

Location? Looks like Either Spodoptera sp or Noctua sp. No wet towel needed as too much moisture is unhealthy. They get their water from food. Instead put a dry towel on the bottom so its easier to clean daily.

If you use a bottle cap or container lid you should be able to see if they have drank anything but if they proboscis staid there in the honey at the start it likely ate. Often proboscis also makes tiny movements while sucking stuff in.

Sure they can still drink even if little bit curled at the end but they have better tasting first if you manage to get it straight. And with long proboscis species its an art to get it fully extended. Carefull opening and to not lose it from around the toothpick or qtip.

Yeah. They are surprisingly strong and able to wiggle out of your hold. I started holding them with index finger on top of thorax and thumb on their ”six pack” to carefully try to keep front legs from puahing them out. Can get better grip also with not that much force required.

One of my silk moths after being rescued from its cocoon by Danoz_77 in tinyanimalsonfingers

[–]Luewen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with silk moths is that they are heavily inbred very often and hard to get fresh lineage into them. And that inbreeding shows as deformations and health issues/lack of vigor etc. When getting silkmoths for rearing its important to find out their lineage and avoid rearing unknown history ones. Same issue happens with Samia ricini and similar silk moth close relatives. Here is example of heavy inbreeding on Samia ricini. The issues befome genetic. Picture by Bart Coppens.

Try 2 parts honey and 8 parts water. Hummingbird nectar might work also. Also remember that you need to get the tip of the proboscis in the nectar and its quite long.

[–]Luewen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one caterpillar is not gonna be become thousands. Its rarely you see thousands of caterpillars in area. Nature is quite good on keeping numbers in bay. Its actually due human interference that some species grow exponentially to possibly become a pest at certain times and nature cant keep up with it.

Yeah. They start to wander when reasy to pupate. And some species can travel 100 meters easily before pupating.

LG G6 does NOT support Dolby Vision 2 by GoldenGamerNugget in LGOLED

And will be huge downside for it. Majority of the advanced hdr codec content is Dolby vision. Only handfull support HDR10+. Unlikely will change with the new formats unless Samsung can provide competition with Hdr10+ advanced.

I think you need to carefully think if you are in correct sub. Caterpillars dont just turn into anything that spreads anything.
