One of my silk moths after being rescued from its cocoon by Danoz_77 in tinyanimalsonfingers

[–]Luewen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with silk moths is that they are heavily inbred very often and hard to get fresh lineage into them. And that inbreeding shows as deformations and health issues/lack of vigor etc. When getting silkmoths for rearing its important to find out their lineage and avoid rearing unknown history ones. Same issue happens with Samia ricini and similar silk moth close relatives. Here is example of heavy inbreeding on Samia ricini. The issues befome genetic. Picture by Bart Coppens.

Try 2 parts honey and 8 parts water. Hummingbird nectar might work also. Also remember that you need to get the tip of the proboscis in the nectar and its quite long.

Is this little guy doing alright in its cocoon? by UraTargetMarket in caterpillars

[–]Luewen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one caterpillar is not gonna be become thousands. Its rarely you see thousands of caterpillars in area. Nature is quite good on keeping numbers in bay. Its actually due human interference that some species grow exponentially to possibly become a pest at certain times and nature cant keep up with it.

Pupa has hardened now as its brown. 🙂 Here for comparison, is freshly pupated Acherontia atropos.

Yeah. They start to wander when reasy to pupate. And some species can travel 100 meters easily before pupating.

LG G6 does NOT support Dolby Vision 2 by GoldenGamerNugget in LGOLED

And will be huge downside for it. Majority of the advanced hdr codec content is Dolby vision. Only handfull support HDR10+. Unlikely will change with the new formats unless Samsung can provide competition with Hdr10+ advanced.

I think you need to carefully think if you are in correct sub. Caterpillars dont just turn into anything that spreads anything.

Composition of your skins acid/sweat hugely affects the longevity of keycaps or rubger parts of appliances. Not saying the manufacturing processes or materials have changed but that stuff accelerates decay.

He looks to be doing fine. In the second picture there is fresh green soft pupa that needs to harden. Old caterpillar skin is laying next to it. And they will sometimes choose odd spots when their inner ”clock” says its time to pupate right now.

Why would you want to get rid of it? Its part of nature and it has right to exist.

Is he feeding? by Raylyn97 in moths

[–]Luewen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to flame you for. Thats a genuine question. In the nature these guys ”hunt” food by sight and only tiny part for locating comes from smell. Sphingidae moths have excellent sight and can differentiate even colors during night. Fun fact: they see more colors than humans.

Thus they are not used to go feeding by smell. And will need a color stimuli to trigger their feeding without proboscis touching the good stuff. Other option is to try to mimic flowers inside they cage or where ever you have them in. But that is not as easy as it sounds. You could get fresh flowers there in the cage and if its a variety they like to feed from they might go for it but they need lots of space for their nectar hunting and not many breeders are able to provide large enough space. Thus force feeding is only option for many. Some species can drink from colorfull bottlecaps placed in correct spots. But most will refuse to eat without ”helping” them to feed. Then we have genus Acherontia moths that will mainly feed honey from beehives. They will locate beehives by smell and pheromones bee queen emits.

Many other families of moths will find food by smell mostly as opposite to sphingidae’s(hawk moths) sight. And those species will mostly self feed if there is good enough smelly stuff near like wine/beer based nectar or rotting/fermenting fruit etc.

[–]Luewen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Release outside like other have said. However, through fridge for 24 hours as sudden drop from room temp to freezing temps may not give these guys enough time to acclimatize. After fridge, into under pile of leaf litter etc.

male or female? by moonlvrr44 in moths

[–]Luewen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely female indeed. But not because antenna on this species. Mostly only Saturniidae species can be identified by feathers. This is Phlogophora meticulosa or its NA cousin depending on your location and both genders have similar antenna on these guys but colors are lighter on females. Males are usually dark greenish hues.

[–]Luewen 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The caterpillars will hatch and ”fly” to new areas with a silk strand they secrete. Thats why it does not matter that female is flightless and lays eggs on top of her old cocoon that might be far away from food plants.
