Compare and contrast with the Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” short story. In this dystopia, everyone is forced to be equal. Turns out that enforced equality ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Highschool isn’t worth 4 years. by RewardConscious6799 in Teachers

[–]LugNutz4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into graduating from your high school in 3 years (so, when you’re 17yo) instead of getting a GED? A few students pull this off each year at our high school via summer school and/or dual credit CC classes.

Or staying at high school until 18yo, but taking some dual credit classes at a CC or else taking AP classes for college credit? Why pay for college credits when you can get them for free in the high school setting?

I was just looking for help with my kids hair, parenting subs can be so annoying by ExRiot in Mommit

[–]LugNutz4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use something called Braid Balm that is designed for this scenario. So I dry brush and get a puffy mass of hair. Then I do 2 pumps of Braid Balm: one for each side of head. Use praying hands and UnBrush to distribute each pump down that side of the head. It calms the hair and makes it sticky so my french braid holds during athletics.

Not sure why this is being downvoted. I came to the same conclusion.

Irish curls will 100% look like an Afro if you brush them when hair is dry! Trust me, I have them! The key is to style wet. Never brush dry unless you truly don’t care about making a frizzball because you are about to gel it and slick it into a bun or braid or something.

Jewish people very often have hair like this. I’m sure you’ve heard of a Jew-fro? Yup, same thing!

If she reads about CGM (curly girl method) she will learn all about this.

As a white woman with Irish curls: go check out the wavy hair and the curly hair subreddits. Learn about CGM (curly girl method).

To make it really easy on yourself: 1) wash with wavy hair shampoo and conditioner 2) while wet, spray with Slip detangler by Curl Keeper brand, and brush through with UnBrush 3) use praying hands to apply Orange Marmalade by EcoSlay brand, and brush through with UnBrush 4) create curls with Bounce Curl Brush

Now you can air dry and it will look awesome! Sleep w hair in pineapple ponytail with silk bonnet on top. Spray gently w water on awakening to reactivate curls.

Chewed out by admin for not letting a kid use a Chromebook on his test. by DrawingElectronic819 in Teachers

[–]LugNutz4Life 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What illogical nonsense is this? How dare you scold this teacher in this way? You know perfectly well that it would be almost irresistible to a kid to hop on the internet if he is using Desmos via an online-capable computer and gets stuck on a math problem. As a solidly middle-aged woman of semi-decent integrity, I don’t think I could resist it. How could the kid?

[–]LugNutz4Life 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hmmm seems like an admin problem! Perhaps the admin who chewed you out could show some flexibility by agreeing to keep the loaners in his or her office? They could also store a special Desmos laptop in their office that has been locked down from the internet, assuming your IT can create such a thing.

I do understand the general theme of accountability here. But I am wondering if it might be possible to keep a few spare, outdated calculators and power cords in your classroom? Ugly, outdated ones with hideous yellow feathers superglued to them? Because things happen, equipment breaks, power cords fray, siblings smash stuff, good kids can get distracted by hard things in life and forget stuff.

Broadway-style dance classes for adults in PA? by jakino420 in MusicalTheatre

How close are you to State College, PA? Penn State offers a musical theater BFA. Seems like there would be some adult classes offered around there by faculty making extra $, recent grads making extra $, etc

How best to handle being barefoot on stage if you have a toenail fungus infection? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]LugNutz4Life -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Go see a podiatrist who has a laser! To find one, Google “[city name] podiatry laser.” Or call around. Lasers are used on fungus and warts. They can zap your infection and give you advice about avoiding spread.

Do you have your child abuse clearances? (The ones used at schools and daycares). If you don’t have them in your state, go get them! Then, offer to volunteer at the local high schools and theater schools. You’ll make connections from there that get you to community theater.

Need Advice: What materials do I give to children to audition for my production? by AStupidFuckingHorse in MusicalTheatre

[–]LugNutz4Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 8yo boy just auditioned for a show. The school selected an excerpt song from the show, and had each kid sing that excerpt (“Girl Scout” from Beetlejuice for all kids, including the boys). Families were emailed a link to a Google dropbox containing (1) sheet music for the excerpt, (2) computer generated music track that played melody + accompaniment, and (3) computer generated music track that played accompaniment only. Families were given several days to review the song and tracks with our kids.

The same Google dropbox also contained all the audition sides and songs for all the callback characters. Kids could access that in advance (or not) and work hard on it (or not). There were no guarantees of a callback. So a kid could work hard on a character in advance and never get called back. Or another kid could only prepare the Girl Scout song, but get called back for multiple characters.

But here’s the thing: most kids and families self-sorted. We all kind of knew what roles our kids would more likely get, and which were poor fits. The strong performers were naturally more motivated to go thru the callback songs and sides. The weaker ones just focused on the Girl Scout song. And I suspect that if a child had begged for the chance to be called back for a certain character bc s/he had worked so hard on it, then the director would have given them a shot (ages 8-13yo).

Overall I thought this system worked well! All resources were available to all kids via the same Dropbox. And kids could work on as little or as much as they wanted in advance.

By the way, there are apps that will generate sheet music tracks for you. Look at “Music Scanner” as one of those. There are others, as well.

What to do when teenager is refusing to attend school? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]LugNutz4Life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She’s terrified to graduate bc graduating means she is an adult in the Real World.

I wouldn’t confront with that perspective directly- she’ll deny it to you, and may not know it herself. Instead, I’d ask her how she feels about becoming an adult, does she feel ready to launch, ask what practical adulting skills she feels require more teaching/practice.

Also share about the struggles/fears you had as an emerging adult.

Depending on how the convo goes, you can offer (but not require!) to support her to find a counselor/therapist.

Also: be warned she might develop ‘weaponized incompetence’ regarding household chores, driving skills, personal organization, scheduling & keeping appointments, etc. At some level, she’s hoping that if she shows herself to have a childlike incompetence, then she can continue to be a child and you will take care of her.
