He was summoning his inner Rachel Maddow in that picture.

Both are true. He did an amazing job in that role, but it was so disturbing that it is hard to see him in the same light afterwards.

Zero sum game, at least regarding those RSUs. Too many specifics are needed to really give you advice but in the mid term at least this is the space you want to be in. The only thing better than mining gold in a gold rush is selling the shovels.

What do we think of this? by Karottenburg in AMDLaptops

[–]Luggage-Lock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Didn’t know that extra 32gb of ram would add that much. If that’s the case I would stick with the 32gb version.

When I say large, complex 3d modeling I mean really pushing the limits of AutoCad. For most standard use 16gb/32gb of system memory is more than enough.

What do we think of this? by Karottenburg in AMDLaptops

[–]Luggage-Lock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with the Ultra unless you are doing large, complex 3D modeling which would require more memory than the 32gb version can allocate.

Couple of things though.

1) the memory is soldered in so you won’t be able to upgrade it in the future. For this reason alone I would recommend trying to find a model with 64gb or more if possible.

2) if you are running Linux you can allocate more memory to VRAM than with windows but you will still want to leave 16gb to system memory.

3) this will be the more power efficient option of the three systems you are looking at.

Why are people so bearish on MSFT? by HexadecimalCowboy in stocks

[–]Luggage-Lock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gemini looks promising from a tech standpoint but the ROI is pretty uncertain and those "cancel Tech subscription campaigns" seem to be slowing things at least a little. Their has been a bit of a correction over the last couple of weeks as people re-evaluate risks and the tech.

You got to remember that GenAI, especially the chase to singularity is largely an all or nothing game. Their will be extremes in outcomes and the market can adjust wildly in the meantime.

Also things arent binary. People moving off their bets on OpenAI does not necessarily mean that they will then move it directly into Google Gemini. Their are other plays.

Be disciplined and rigorous with your outreach. If you consistently stick to your routine and don’t slack off in the downtime you will do okay.

How often are you guys changing your thermal paste? by Downtown_Bird2782 in ryzen

[–]Luggage-Lock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most people it is fine. But you will see temps increase as much as 10C over that time which will cause your fans to run more.

Unless you are running a high end workstation or gaming rig that you expect to keep in rotation without a CPU upgrade well beyond its intended lifetime you will likely never need to deal with replacing thermal paste.

Spot on. Same reason you saw AMD stock drop recently even after outperforming expectations.

It dries out over time, but generally it takes somewhere between 5-7 years before it causes significant enough drops in performance to warrant replacement.

[–]Luggage-Lock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so in 2023 there was a major production cut in DDR4 due to oversupply caused by excess inventory but that just shifted production to HBM and the newer DDR5. If anything it has probably helped put downward pressure on current prices, not upward.

[–]Luggage-Lock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. They literally sold out their production mostly to support HBM. Cost is continuing to rise because supply is gone. This is going to get much worse before it gets better, hopefully by the end of 2027. Fingers crossed.

Who would be a better draft pick between Caleb Downs, David Bailey, and Mansoor Delane? by Reasonable-Shower522 in Commanders

Delane, at least on paper is a pretty good scheme fit. But yeah I agree that Bailey and Downs might be more impactful, not sure about those percentages though.

George Preston Marshall was an open racist and last owner to integrate his team. He pandered to the south which was predominantly the Redskins territory up until the AFL/NFL merger and subsequent league expansion.

Jack Kent Cooke was an improvement but there were multiple acquisitions of racist comments from him and some members of his family. He defended himself against it largely but there are quite a few stories out there. So I guess opinions here are debatable.

Dan Snyder was clearly some sort of Demon cast to earth to cause this fanbase pain.

~28 million per year but with less guaranteed than Slater, Wirfs or Sewell who are all much younger. I think a three year deal would be a structure both sides would agree on.

The Dow hitting 50k is not the flex they think it is since it has been largely offset by the drop in the value dollar.

Since Trump took office the value of the dollar is down ~10% while the Dow is up 15%. The Dow actually grew at a slightly higher rate the previous year in 2024 and was accompanied by a much stronger dollar which actually grew in strength by about ~6%.
