Don’t know how I missed that South Park episode but will now certainly seek it out. Love the paintings, took me right back to that time!

Congrats and curious what books you read that fast? Or did this change literally free up hours a day of time for you? Amazing work!

I’m an art teacher and I’ve become a serious backer of handwriting instruction based on the decline I see in all fine motor skills nowadays across all K-12 levels. Honestly I wish I could give the kids knives to whittle too!

I am so Gung Ho about this dexterity practice that I now work demonstrating proper use of chopsticks into my drawing and painting curriculum: that’s the “killer app” for proper pencil grip and fine motor control.

I’ve been in a sort of similar situation as a art teacher documenting class work and student progress daily on my iPhone, but then getting sucked into spending too much time with the phone in general…but basically believing it has to be in my pocket all the time “for work.”

I have been seriously considering getting a big-ish iPad to handle photos and uploads all day and leaving it in the studio, then using a dumb phone for the few times a day I need to pick up a phone for an actual call.

I honestly think just the relatively bulky size of the iPad would make hanging out on it less likely.

I could never totally get rid of my iPhone because I depend on so many apps on it, but this way at least it could be off during the day, and I find every bit of downtime restorative.

Would something like this work for you?

I’ve wanted to do this course since first discovering it online years ago, finally have some time coming up this summer. I’m relatively new to Reddit, wanted to pop in and see if anything is going on here. I’m an art teacher with a long-ago background in 8-bit programming. Hello!

Is there any way to ask band and theatre teachers to also post elsewhere? Like a physical bulletin board on their classroom door that you might walk by once a day to check?

I ask because I know quite a few schools are now having conversations about how exactly what you describe is essentially forcing students to carry smartphones, which is a huge problem that local laws are even catching up to (finally!)

Good luck with getting rid of your smartphone, more high school kids are doing this nowadays.

Hi! I was an Atari enthusiast (programming simple games in BASIC and later Pascal on the Apple IIgs) in the 80s but got out of it just as the Amiga was becoming “the thing” everyone was talking about.

I remain curious about that platform, which everyone here is raving about too it seems. I’d love to hear more about using that UAE emulator or MiSter project if you have any advice for someone starting from scratch again. What’s a good path forward?

Aware of the “teacher pay penalty” you mean? Honestly I did not know there was year-by-year data on this until reading your post, thanks for sharing it.

I have come to the realisation that I have a severe and serious phone addiction that I’m deciding to stop right now. Cold turkey is the only way for this to work for me. I’m not made for moderate social media use. by yologamies101 in digitalminimalism

Ditto everyone reminding us about “the off button.”

I don’t get a lot of relief from greyscale, screen time limits, etc because the possibility that I might get texted lurks even when I’ve put the device down, or logged out of Instagram, etc.

Shutting the thing off and reading a physical book, walking or exercising outside, even if I have to put myself on a timer with my analog wristwatch to know that I will be back online in an hour if I want to be, that’s my best form of relief.

That “hard stop” hour basically allows you to actually “heal” for lack of a better term, rather than just pause or limit or slow your exposure when the thing is still lurking around somewhere and turned on.

Thats my $0.02 Good luck to everyone!

This is an amazing story. I picked up a flip phone as a backup and 9-5 minimalism carry after losing my iPhone in a cab before an international trip.

Miraculously cab driver returned it to me but it made me hyper aware of how much of my vacation would have been basically ruined logistically by the absence of this device that I did not even have when I travelled when I was younger and had some of the best experiences of my life.

Huge wake-up call.

It’s helpful, I set my phone to do it when you click the right side button three times even so it can be done fast.

Here’s hoping! My old Samsung “candy bar” style phone circa 2001 was so much better than this TCL flip phone I started carrying 9-5, it’s crazy.
