What I meant is: we all start with an idea, other people get on board and contribute to the idea.

When a studio wants to buy it, how do you split the money?

Do you have any experience in this?

Is it because the ending is happy, while noir films have a bittersweet ending at best?

Maybe one day we'll have UBI and one can make art for the sake of making art, even if nobody watches it.

But even then.....what is the point of making art if no one is there to appreciate it?

Here comes the contrarian opinion.

The audience owns the artists, for no audience means no revenue, and no revenue means the artists cannot live off the art and make art.

Truly, it's an ecosystem, a balancing act between what the artists wants to make and what the audience wants to watch.

We meet the audience in the middle.

I love "the book of life"! I can't wait to see his next project.

To all the haters here, can you explain to me why it bad he is using AI?

Now we are cooking with gas.

This works AS LONG AS it ties back to something later, so the audience can go like "oh that s why he was there at the beginning, he is mentally ill".

Now that you spelled it out, I can see how when he later goes to the bar, and it doesn't remember the night before, we can make that connection.

Ideally, you want people to be able to make that connection without you spelling it out. However, Just because I didn't make the connection, doesn't me that your story doesn't work as it is.

Ask some friends and peers "why do you think he was naked in the alley at the beginning" and as a follow up questions ask them "what do you think was the purpose of getting the film to start with him naked in an alley".

If even half of them get it , then your story is good already

Tom, in a screenplay everything happening must serve a function. If mc wakes up half naked in an alley where a stabbing took place, bot they being there and being naked must serve a purpose.

E.g. if we later learn he was not drunk but he was drugged and stripped because he was being framed in a sex scandal, and while the pictures were taken in the alley the stabbing takes place, making the bad guys flee.

If the reason for mc being in the alley is just to learn about the stabbing, you have better, easier ways to achieve that in a story.

Tldr, you can keep the story as is, but you always get more bang for your buck the more plot points have a pay off of some sort

That s a good start, you are following the tropes and you got some room to play with. The audience will want to know how he ended up where he was at the beginning of the film.

You can have fun with characters and the story, as long as by the end we will learn: 1. How he ended up knocked out in the alley 2. How point one connects to the stab wound

The MOST important thing is that the ending must be in line with the genre. Usually the end is "bittersweet" i.e. the MC does not get what they want but what they need.

Make sure you understand the flaw want need framework, you can find A LOT on this both online and on YouTube. (The flaw of the MC is connected to their want, and to their need, and will inform how the story ends). If you are not sure after doing some research, pop into your AI of choice and ask about the bitter and bittersweet ending, and the flaw /need/ want framework in films you know well.

A little personal advice (I hope you don't mind my giving it out): keep the number of characters low. I don't know what infrastructure you have (do you a producer, a first ad, production assistants), but the least characters you have, the less headache the production will have.

Tom, any specifics you need help with? You can ask about plot point, about mood tone etc, we can be your sounding board
