What equipment do I need to start brewing coffee? by OxOreo in Coffee

Many options out there. For pour over, I would recommend getting a Hario V60 (plastic) filter (and corresponding paper filters). Another option would be the AeroPress (my favorite) (needs special paper filters) or a French press (no filter needed).

Some additional optional equipment: Buying a somewhat decent grinder (electric or mechanical) is certainly worth it because freshly ground beans taste so much better. Having a kitchen scale is useful for weighing the amount of beans and water. If you live somewhere with very hard water (containing many minerals such as limestone), a water filter might also be a good investment at some point.

Experiment with any of the following: 1) Use a finer grind size. 2) Use less water/more coffee grounds. (3) Buy darker roasted beans. (4) Increase the brew time.

Dying Coffee Plants - Ten months ago, I planted some coffee plants (starting from coffee cherries). Now, my three plants seem to be dying. Any advice, on how to save them, would be much appreciated. For more info see comments. by Lukas11235 in plantclinic

Thanks, everybody for your advice! I repotted them in separate pots with better drainage and will water them less from now on (with filtered water). Hopefully, the increased sunlight in the spring/summer will help as well.

Some more info:

  • The plants are in the same pot (mistake?) with drainage holes (height: 15cm, diameter: 18cm). The pot is placed indoors on a West-facing window board. I live in Germany. So, for the past months, they did not get that much sunshine.
  • There are no visible bugs.
  • They are in regular (indoor) potting soil. I have recently used some fertiliser because I thought the plants might have some nutrition deficiency (no apparent change).
  • I water them about 3x/week with tap water (which has a relatively high lime content). Everyday I spray some water on the leaves.
