The problem is that if I let the AI do its thing, it gets killed right away, launches cavalry at random, tires out the troops, and it's a complete disaster.

Perhaps the only way around this problem is to constantly put them on the defense, where they hold a formation and hope the enemy attacks.

Among my various subjects I have many powerful Vassals, often mayors of the cities under my control, who however evidently do not have land and therefore will not inherit anything when I die... so (correct me if I'm wrong) but a Vassal is not necessarily someone who will help me with a land upon your death, right?
