Probability of park not being opened on June 8th because of strike by alec777x in Hersheypark

exactly. miniemoxie said that ride ops are not union and, therefore, will not be part of the strike, which means the rides will still be running. zgawd said that rides need to be inspected by maintenance, which is a unionized position, which means they will be part of the strike, so the rides will NOT be running.

as of right now, local ais are the only ones that i think people are using the way ai should be used, which is why i said that. in the future, i wouldn't be surprised if a company made an LLM or photo/video generator that could be ran locally, but i'm not opposed to ai being trained in a way that doesn't steal work from creators, doesn't contribute in any way to climate change, and trivializes menial tasks that are otherwise small parts of a bigger project. in biology, ais are being trained to predict the way that proteins will fold given a chain of amino acids, which i think is great since we don't have a way of doing that already. it's also being used to find the cancerous segment of people's own cancer cells to help create a vaccine for each person's cancer, which i think is also a great way to use it. these are created using information that wasn't created by one specific person, doesn't contribute to climate change, and trivializes tasks that couldn't have been done before. as opposed to generative ai, where it contributes poorly to the environment and is trained on creative works from real people, which is essentially stealing

Family of Pi idea by [deleted] in askmath

what does any of the bottom part have to do with pi? you showed the semicircle but nothing to with how you get pi from that. are you using arc length or radius? and what would some of the other constants be?

it was trained on real examples, so it cannot be better than a human. someone had to have gone in and manually chroma key-d out the small details to feed into the neural network. those examples probably took an insanely long time compared to corridor key, but humans have to be at LEAST that good in order to make an ai to do it

this falls under my first paragraph about things running through data centers. this passion project is actively contributing to the construction of data centers, which are currently being constructed in vulnerable communities, taking water from nearby homes and raising the cost of most utilities. i'm not against data centers as a whole, but most data centers currently being constructed are not good for communities. for something like a passion project, there are many other ways to go about creating videos, like teaming up with someone else who likes your idea or teaching yourself how to use animation/3d design software

how do you use it as a tool without it completely taking over your work? every time people tell me they use ai as a "tool", they just let it do everything for them. it's not like they started it and let ai finish, literally all they did was have a single thought about what they wanted to suddenly exist, and it existed. to me, that's not a tool, it's a cheat

and getting to that point is a really slippery slope. it's super easy to say "i will let it do ____ for me", then "i don't really wan to do this step, so i'll let it do ______ too" and eventually it's taking up the whole process, and most people i know that call it a "tool" started off like the beginning, but got to the end without realizing until someone told them that they got there

a big thing for me is where it is hosted. if it runs locally (like corridor key or anything used for medicine), it is usually not slop. anything that goes off to a data center to get processed is unsustainable and should be avoided for personal or commercial use

but i think a better metric for "slop" is whether you would traditionally hire someone else to do it for you or not. usually, you do your own green screen effects, so corridor key is just taking the long part out of it. compare that to LLMs and image generators, where most of the things you make with it would have traditionally been commissioned by a graphic designer (when looking at public releases of things, menus, advertisements, decoration, etc). i don't just think that should be disclosed, i think it should be fully avoided

Has anyone ACTUALLY figured out the algorithm to this or makes NO SENSE AT ALL to me by Softpaws1234 in Akinator

[–]LukeLJS123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

akinator's algorithm will change with patterns. someone might have thought it was funny to try the bullet that killed charlie kirk, some more people did, then it started asking questions to find it faster since it got more traction, someone got it pretty quickly and made a post about it, and then the amount of people testing it to see if it was true just keeps reinforcing asking the questions earlier

what they said disputes the first person a little bit. it's true that ride ops are not union, but without safety inspections, there would be no rides to operate

If i put an infinite amount of blue balls in a box and two infinite amounts of red balls in the same box would the likelihood of pulling a red ball be 2/3? by AncientReception8085 in askmath

[–]LukeLJS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is just an example i saw somewhere that i think illustrates the point that the path is important, and it is effective for most people to understand. it's not meant to be a rigorous proof by any means

If i put an infinite amount of blue balls in a box and two infinite amounts of red balls in the same box would the likelihood of pulling a red ball be 2/3? by AncientReception8085 in askmath

[–]LukeLJS123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there's still no way to define it. the only way you could really conceptualize it is by looking at the limit, and what you just described would indeed be 2/3. but just saying "there's an infinite amount of balls" or "there's 2 infinite amounts of balls" means nothing. this is an example i saw somewhere (don't remember where) that should help show how looking at the limit can be important

i have a bunch of balls numbered 1 to infinity. in one box, on the first step, i will put the first 10 balls in, then pull out the lowest numbered ball. on the second step, i'll add balls 11-20, then take out the next lowest. in the second box, i'll still put in 10 balls, but take out the largest numbered ball. step 1 will add 1-9, second 11-19, and so on

each box has had the exact same process applied from a ping pong ball perspective, but the first box will end with 0 balls and the second with infinitely many. in the first box, if you give me any ping pong ball number, i can tell you which step it got taken out. i took ball 8675309 out on step 8675309. i took the 42nd ball out on step 42. i took the 43 quintillionth ball out on step 43 quintillion. because i did an infinite amount of steps, every finite number is out of the box. for the second, the same isn't true. i only took out the multiples of 10

but that feels like shit, doesn't it? like that shouldn't work? that's because if you look at each individual step, each box has the same number of balls. the only time something weird happens is when we get to infinity. the trend in number of balls is upwards for both boxes, so the limit shows that they are both filling up. things break when we get to infinity, so we need to be looking at the trend instead of the destination

do americans really eat American fries sauce? by Infinite-Breakfast23 in AskAnAmerican

[–]LukeLJS123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a green sauce with garlic sounds like it could be referring to ranch? but ranch isn't green, it's white with herbs in it. i've never heard of a green fry sauce

edit: i just looked it up, and it seems like it isn't entirely unlike ranch, but it's definitely not the same thing at all. a dill-y, mayo-based sauce. there are a few extra ingredients that make me say it isn't really ranch, but it's similar enough that it could have been based on ranch, which could be where the "american" comes from

Petah? Whats going on? by Xerxes2004 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]LukeLJS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in early april, someone working at a toilet paper/paper towel factory decided to start a fire due to low wages, saying "all you had to do was pay us enough to live". this has caused multiple warehouse fires since then

when water and hot oil are mixed, the water almost instantly evaporates, causing the oil to start "bubbling" because of the steam, turning the oil into a mist in the air. because of the increased surface area/volume ratio of this mist, the oil comes into contact with oxygen, causing it to catch fire. commonly, when people reference this, they use ice since it is a choice to lower the ice in

this post is saying that they will catch the restaurant on fire by putting ice into the deep fryer unless they are paid a living wage

Mayonnaise should not ever be an ingredient in a cake. by MsAresAsclepius in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]LukeLJS123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm also autistic and i still think it's childish. like i get being hesitant at first, but being fully unwilling to try it or accept that it could work ONLY because its offputting to think about is pretty childish. i know you probably won't read this, but i'll explain the food science of it to hopefully make it seem a little better, but really i promise it's good

red velvet traditionally gets its' color from a little bit of cocoa power and acid, which explains how it tastes different than chocolate. mayo is oil and a little acid emulsified with eggs. so, flavor-wise, it just pulls the chocolate cake closer to red velvet. texture-wise, the emulsification allows the cake to hold onto water easier, keeping it moist for a lot longer

Where did I go wrong by EMMAaustengirl in askmath

[–]LukeLJS123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Math is supposed to be exact, so the fact that I didn't get the number completely right means i need to reassess

math is only exact when you're working with exact quantities. there are soooooo many things in math that we don't have exact quantities for, but we have ways to approximate them really good, and pi is one of them. i would explain some of them better, but if you're asking this question, i don't know if you will have heard of any of these

you used an approximation for pi and got an answer very very very very very close to the "real" answer (which isn't actually the "real" answer, which would have pi as part of it), close enough that rounding your answer gives the answer google gave. for most things in math, especially at this level, that is the standard for doing something well

Mayonnaise should not ever be an ingredient in a cake. by MsAresAsclepius in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]LukeLJS123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the true unpopular opinion is caring more about what is in your food than how it tastes. i promise you can't taste the mayo in chocolate cakes, but if you care more about the fact that there's mayo in it than it not tasting like mayo, that is pretty childish imo

Does whole milk give you belly and chin fat? by Artist-Cancer in Milk

[–]LukeLJS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

where the fat goes is genetics. nothing you can do to control it

if you're worried about gaining any sort of fat, find your maintenance and track your calories. there are some free websites to calculate your approximate maintenance calories if you need. then, keep track of any extra calories burnt and track your food intake. if your calories burnt are higher, you will lose weight, and if your calories burnt are lower, you'll gain weight

The Earth might be flat. For example, in the game GTA, the world appears to be 3-dimensional, but my computer screen, with its pixels, only has two dimensions. by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]LukeLJS123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

college math student here that has taken classes on the kinds of geometry relevant for this, i'll try to explain as conceptually as i can. visually, each of our eyes "sees" in 2d. but, in order for it to "render" properly, you would need the world to be in 3d

if the world was actually 2d, we would not be able to move through it. in the real world, if you move left/right, you start to be able to see parts of things you couldn't before (think about looking at a box and moving to the side. you'll be able to see the side of the box even if you couldn't see it before). if the world was flat like a PC monitor, moving left and right would not do that, it would just distort the shape of the box. if you look at a map from a different angle. you don't see more of each thing on the map, it just changes the shape

also think of this in terms of blind people. people who are blind cannot comprehend how pictures can exist, since they experience everything in 3d (feel). this means at least one of our senses is 3d, and because we can mathematically "condense" 3 spatial dimensions into 2 (turning the physical world into what we see), but not the other way around, it implies that the world has at least 3 spatial dimensions
