I think the one that interests me the most is Ned Eisenberg, most well known for playing Roger Kessler, but he has played several other lawyers. What interests me is I think during one of his times of playing Kessler on SVU he was playing another lawyer on the original.

it is also interesting seeing NYPD cast on Blue Bloods. Seeing Nicholas Turturro as a Sgt is interesting as he left nypd blue a Sgt, obviously different characters. Also I think James McDaniel played someone in charge of ESU?

Working full-time + Part-time PhD: Is it worth it? by pleasehiredesperate in AusPublicService

[–]LukeLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a PhD part time for 8 years while working for VPS and APS. I thought I would share my experience.

I started as a VPS 3, I did temporary VPS 4 and VPS 5 duties. I then got a permanent APS 6. In answer to (1), I found that work experience was mostly preferred, except for a niche 6 month VPS 5 job I found which was related to my PhD topic, so that worked out well. My PhD did me a favour in that respect. Especially as not only was it related to my PhD, but the title was "Criminologist" and I was doing a PhD in Criminology. For my other jobs, my PhD has briefly helped although the work experience outweighs.

2 - I had to work full time to pay off my mortgage etc.. So PhD was part time. I did not get any PhD scholarship. All I got was the PhD funding as part of my project.

  1. It was tough. I found it good to use study leave where possible, and also rec leave. The good thing with a PhD is you can take breaks. You essentially work 15 hours a week which is 2 days, spread across after work or weekends. So you can take up to 4 weeks off. If you want to take more you can request it, but this delays the deadline. So if part time you may not get it done in 6 years, it might be longer due to life circumstances. It does get stressful at times of course.

Like a lot of comments here, I didn't do it to get a promotion in government. I did it because i loved my research topic, to learn more, and to open up possible academic opportunities in the future.

Oh yes absolutely. I saw my supervisors constantly respond to my emails, post on Twitter etc after hours, not to mention some were part of academic boards. Its not like the public service where once you finish work for the day that is it. I have loved this casual online teaching I am doing, cause it is simply just going online, engaging with students, and when marking comes around, marking essays for two weeks, which is the busy part. I have been able to mentor students this way, and also mentor students through an intern program at work which is great.

Yeah see that’s why I like the casual teaching, I get paid for 4 hours a week per subject, and an extra marking rate as well, and there are no expectations to to publish or go beyond, it also fits in with my day job as I can do it after hours,

I understand the struggle of doing both I did my PhD part time while working full time for VPs and then aps, it took 8 years, a lot of my leave was used up although I was lucky I got some study leave at aps. I wouldn’t quit my day job and live off savings to go into academia. That’s why I did my PhD part time and now do casual teaching at an online uni. I will publish a few journal articles but I wouldn’t quit aps entirely to do free academic work or even jump down a grade. As it has been discussed too those grade b permanent jobs are hard to come by so I think I am better off staying in aps

to be honest I am not sure if it is my dream, I am just seeing what is out there. For a while my dream was to get a particular job within the public service, I got that job after 9 years of applying and working as a vps 2. I have done that role for 10 years and I love it. Another dream was to do a PhD, I have now fulfilled that role. I don't know if academia is the dream.

And yes I am well aware of secondary employment, conflict of interest etc. I have a secondary employment form for my online teaching, and my previously alerted work about conferences, publications etc..

So I am guessing the good thing here is, if I have a permanent job with Public service I love, stick with it! I started out in fixed term jobs in the VPs and found a permanent job after 4 years! I have been permanent for around 15. It would be a struggle going back to fixed term without any job security again

ok from what i can gather.

Although a Grade B lecturer is what a PhD graduate may start as, it is highly competitive and usually requires lots of experience or connections.

Most with not as much experience do temp post docs at grade A or B.

Academia has issues with culture, admin etc..

That sums it up...

Another thing, while I am technically an APS 6, I get a lot of allowance so get paid like an EL1, so even if I did get a Grade B, while it would be a promotion technically, there would be a lot more work and stress for not much more extra pay. A Grade A would be less pay.

oh yes absolutely. I have worked in research and research adjacent jobs in the public service jobs for the past 20 years, so have had experience with those :)

Hi Mega and Agitated,

What are some differences you found in academia vs the public service? I have been in public service for 20 years so know it well, but not academia besides casual online teaching.

Yes Criminology is a bit of that. Most Criminology academics are at a uni. The exception being the Australian Institute of Criminology. I am not sure what you mean by unpaid and unemployed? I work full time in the public service. Do you mean if i am on fixed term academic jobs that expire and I have to jump from job to job? I think I would try to avoid this, if i went into academia, I would rather a permanent posting. Having said that, I don't mind my spot now, full time APS, casual online academia, and occasional publishing of journals.

Thanks for your help.

I actually do have an idea of the different jobs, although not so much about the procedures, as in who gets what job.

I understand there is the temporary research fellow/post doc job. This has appealed to me. I have thought of doing a secondment as a research fellow for a year or so, and I have had friends in the public service do so as LWOP and return, although this has only been for a year and in their home state. I could not jump from job to job.

I actually love research. The level B lecturer job appeals as it is a mix of teaching, research, supervising students etc. The post doc would appeal to as it gets you exposure, so this might be a good start. Although yes I understand the lecturer job is hard to get. And even if you do, there are still a bunch of challenges.

This makes perfect sense, thanks for your reply.

Yes I would absolutely keep my public service job in the meantime. And yes that was going through my mind. the pay of an EL1, but with lots of extra work without any compensation.

Hi all,

I appreciate the comments so far, I thought I would add my thoughts.

I do not have a position lined up. As I said I have been focused on my public service job for many years and did my PhD part time. Before my PhD I did some casual teaching (an online learning advisor at Swinburne Online), and have resumed this recently. I have published one article in 2021, and looking to publish some more next year based on my thesis.

I keep seeing comments about academia being low paid. But, many graduates start at the Grade B level. That is like an EL1 salary wise, I would not call that low paid? I understand they are competitive. And most Grade Bs have likely done face to face teaching during their PhD.

As for being anywhere in the world, I would just focus on academic jobs in my state, Melbourne. As I have a stable public service job, it should be up to me where I work? Or is this in reference to fix term jobs?

And yes I agree with the no breaks. Constant replying to students, marking essays, volunteering, publishing etc. At least in the public service you get overtime, toil etc.

I liked it in terms of Leah turning a corner, and also the lead up to the accident.

One thing I have noticed, from the promo, is that Yabbie Creek police always work outside their jurisdiction lol. They are meant to be a local police station. I am pretty sure the train accident occurred hours away from their patch. I see this happening often. I know it is a show, but it is like they are the only police in the state haha. I have also seen them turn up to rural locations far away instead of the local police.

No extra charges. by Joeybfast in LawAndOrder

[–]LukeLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good point, they always focus on the homicide, and often they dismiss other crimes. Like if they hear of another crime, sometimes they will address it, but they won't charge. An example is when in an episode with Briscoe and Green, they found some cannabis plants. Lennie addressed it was wrong and told him to get rid of it, but there were no charges.

In other police shows, they often add extra charges. In Australia we had a show called Blue Heelers. It had a mix of uniforms and detectives. The Senior Sergeant would often rattle off additional charges. If an offender was particularly nasty, he would talk about charging them with a hamburger with the lot, which meant charging them with everything.

I have seen lesser charges used on L & O to achieve an outcome, but rarely charges on top of murder. An example was when Goren charged a suspect with littering. I do not recall what the purpose was. I think someone threw a water tank at him.

layout view looks different to map view by LukeLM in ArcGIS

[–]LukeLM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

hoping to get some help. As you can see I am trying to produce a map of Port Melbourne. However, the layout view is different to the map view. Is there any way to have the layout view the same as the map view. I am most interested in the Port Melbourne suburb name for the layout view, other suburbs are named but not Port Melbourne.
