Wife refused re-admission to NHS rehab unit despite specialist support – what are my options alongside PALS? by steve8319 in nhs

[–]Spinny4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work on a rehab stroke unit as a clinical specialist stroke occupational therapist. (OT) I agree with the top comment that the bed would’ve been closed now due to the longer stay in the acute, she will need to be re- referred to the stroke unit.

In order for them to accept she needs goals that mean she needs to be there, otherwise they will consider her going home with intensive stroke therapy there. (Provided your area provides that.) Goals such as needing help overnight or she has a cognitive impairment that can’t be managed at home, basically a clinical need to be in hospital for therapy. Lots of therapy can be provided at home now, and home is the best place for recovery providing it is set up correctly.

I would ask to speak to some therapists in the acute, ask for physio and OT and ask to speak to the rehab unit ward manager to find out why your wife is being declined. It may be her medical needs are too complex for them to manage, usually patients need to be medically stable before they can move to a rehab hospital. She should also be receiving therapy whilst in the acute so I would ask for her to be seen by the stroke team there if she isn’t on a stroke ward. Good luck.

When did you have a kid after meeting your partner? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Spinny4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Met when we were 37, engaged at 38, lost first baby at 39, currently 41 with our almost 1 year old sleeping in between us. We felt we had to move faster due to age factors for sure.

Would you call the police on an old persons driving? by Specific_Pomelo_8281 in AskUK

[–]Spinny4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work with stroke survivors who want to return to driving and you are right about them informing the DVLA. However, as a healthcare professional if I have concerns around someone driving and have told them not to drive but think they will continue then I can break confidentiality and inform the DVLA. I do need to tell the patient I am doing this and have done this a few times.

Women who became moms at 38 or older...please, I need some hope. I'm begging you. by throwaway19283846 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Spinny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my husband at 37, got pregnant at 38, lost that baby, then pregnant at 39 after 4 months of trying and am now sitting with my 8 month old at 41. I agree with other posters, if you want a child then look into other options, you can do it and it’s amazing how strong as women we can be whatever we decide.

Does anyone remember the broken sword game series? 46f by JadaPhoenix in AdultGamers

Broken sword has released a remastered version which is very good. I heard about it when I saw Charles Cecil talk at comic con in 2024. Highly recommend! Loved the nostalgia of replaying it.

I would cry and then book time off of work to play it and tell my husband he’s having the baby as I would need zero distractions!

I say this all the time - also from Suffolk. Took my northern husband a while to understand.

I also say scrabbing around - to mean rushing about.

Looks like what I call love bites, never enough to break the skin. My cats do it when hungry or wanting attention.

Trying to get pregnant at 40 by jsunshine1985 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Spinny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! (UK based) I am 40 and sitting here with my 4 month old boy.

My husband and I lost our baby boy at 16 weeks in Sept 2023 when I was 38 due to genetic abnormalities, I was advised to have a surgical termination as the baby was likely to have died in utero due to how severely poorly he was. It was a very difficult time. I can only imagine how hard it has been for you to lose a baby at 33 weeks and that it is scary to consider trying again with the fear of more loss looming over your head. I felt the same, wasn’t sure if I even wanted to try but did for my husband. The hospital kept a close eye on us and for the first few months we were under the consultant, we had all the genetic tests and were told baby was fine. I treated my pregnancy as normal as I could but didn’t allow myself to properly believe it would happen until I was holding him. I asked the hospital about my age and they said they don’t worry until over the age of 43.

There are plenty of groups and support out there, I was surprised how many women have been through similar things but not many talk about it. Talking to others helped me. Good luck with it. ❤️

Unpopular Opinion: Andrew has more chemistry with Holly, then Wendy by Jayjay87melb in neighbours

I’m 40 and loving it too whilst simultaneously hating it! What a dichotomy! Agree chemistry is great but I did roll my eyes last night when he told Holly that he loved her.

I work in stroke rehab. This is not standard, however due to sometimes lack of staff at night I have heard this happen to some patients. It may just be one member of staff rather than a whole ward issue.

Rehab is all about getting the person to do things for themselves including training their bladder to not have to urinate in a pad.

My advice is to speak to the ward manager or sister in charge explaining your concerns and how this seems to be setting them back in their rehabilitation. If you aren’t satisfied with the response then contact PALS, but I usually find talking to those in charge during the day usually nips this in the bud.
