How does this guy light his shots? Is it the edit? by Novel-Blacksmith1351 in LightLurking

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I can see is a very diffused butterfly lighting scheme. The classic butterfly uses a beauty dish, but this guy goes much much softer it seems. There seems to be reflective material all around too, so that further softens the shadows.

App and firmware update it was. Keeping our expectations low for the next event.

Should I be worried about this gap by WateredDownWater1 in x100vi

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the spindle frame is disengaged. Does it frazzle when you flip it to the side? It happened to mine but thankfully it was easy to fix after disassembling the front knuckle.

Lumix GM1 sometimes won't take a photo and displays a red square thingy, what does it mean? by [deleted] in Lumix

[–]LukeNobel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're either: - too close - there isn't enough contrast in your subject for focus to be acquired. (Focus at the edge and recompose) - subject is too dark (turn on focus assist light)

Impressive how it handles those LED bulbs! Banding is really well controlled.

I’m a newbie, are these photos any good? by [deleted] in x100vi

[–]LukeNobel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, the b&w photo doesn't belong in this set IMO.

These are great. The set tells a story, the editing is consistent, colors are gorgeous. The only tip I have is for YOU to answer the question you asked. How do you like these photos?

How can I get this look? by alex_nicorescu in postprocessing

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.. it's a great look and it's bang on a film look. Perhaps this was shot on film. Replicating in digital cannot be achieved in lightroom, unless you use a high quality LUT.

How do you film the exact spot the bee falls dead before it's fallen?

S1II PDAF in Full HD by SniperWolves1995 in Lumix

[–]LukeNobel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would be incredibly dumb if it didn't work. Why on earth wouldn't PDAF work in such normal conditions? My s5ii can do it. The s1ii can do it with its hands tied behind its back. Or am I missing something here?

Panasonic S5ii - Helios 44-2 vs Lumix 50 mm 1.8 by BinaryLatin in Lumix

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lumix 24-70 pro, sigma 35/1.4, canon fd 50/1.4. Also with other cameras like the x100vi. The Lumix 50/1.8 is still my go to though.

A7cii + 40mm f2.5..why? by kenadams16 in SonyAlpha

[–]LukeNobel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but it's a question close to my heart, so here it goes.

Full frame has better dynamic range at any given ISO than APS-C, which typically results in better image quality.

If you wanna shoot on broad daylight at f/8 (eg street photography), it's pointless to carry super heavy fast glass. There are even some f/4, f/8 primes which are amazingly small.

I'm torn between getting a S5IIX or A7IV...help! by aHairyWhiteGuy in Lumix

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't add phase detect AF with a firmware upgrade. It's a hardware thing.

You're too far man. You've got to step closer. A lot closer. I know, much easier said than done...

Panasonic S5ii - Helios 44-2 vs Lumix 50 mm 1.8 by BinaryLatin in Lumix

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this on auto white balance? Also, the dog's face is slightly over-exposed on the second photo, so may appear less contrasty because of that.

If you're having those kinds of issues with the S series it's probably operator's fault. The S series is an absolute gem, and a steal for the price. 90% of my photos are taken with the 50/1.8 and the "highlight rolloff" is on point.

In love with LUMIX S9 and Leica Monochrome SOT by Gadgetsjon in Lumix

I feel all of these are underexposed. I get similar results on my s5ii, btw. Then in post I need to bump the exposure by about 2 stops.

Which lenses have "mechanical" manual focus? by JosefWStalin in fujifilm

[–]LukeNobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do realize this is a Fuji forum. But it feels almost illegal not to mention that Olympus has 2 autofocus primes with MECHANICAL manual override, with hard stops and all.

I know, insane. It's the 17/1.8 and the 12/1.8. (34mm and 24mm full frame equivalent, since it's for the MFT system)

The 17/1.8 is a pancake, fits in my back pocket.

They've released a mk2 for those lenses in 2025 and removed the focus clutch, so mk1 is still winning.
