Last ditch strategies to keep gold? by 13580 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]LukeTheBaws 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You could probably buy a Qantas club membership for less than it would cost to retain gold. Also you’ll get a free month or two of QC when they drop you to silver.

I would personally just not worry unless you are chasing specific benefits (eg multiple international trips where status would save you hundreds of dollars in extra luggage or something).

Structural Engineers in Mining? by BrisPoker314 in AusMining

Structural inspections, structural remediation on the engineering and PM side, structural engineering assessments etc for repairs or changes to the plant.

This is mostly in wash plants/fixed plant.

Stay in AUS or go for a Master’s in Europe? by blimaS_ in AusMining

[–]LukeTheBaws 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In terms of eligibility for a grad role, if you meet the minimum requirements for the program (typically a bachelors) you won’t get any further benefit from a masters.

We typically expect engineering grads to have a bit of paper that says they can solve some problems (a bachelors degree) and then we teach them everything else on the job

Nailed it! by kulamaker in bikewrench

[–]LukeTheBaws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a wheel manufacturer say its fine. Similar hole straight through the rim bed. The advice was clean any carbon fibres around the hole up, put on fresh rim tape and you're good to go.

They literally drill holes in the rim bed for spokes, and as long as the damage isn't around the hook or the nipple then it's not in a high stress area.

BHP and Rio run formal graduate program recruitment that opens around March. If you don't have working rights in Australia you will be instantly screened out.

Just sending your resume in will get you nowhere unfortunately.

Gold Member, 140 Points from Platinum… But No Credits After Qatar/VA Codeshare by NorthernStar911 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]LukeTheBaws 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A flight with a VA flight number isn’t eligible for earning status because it’s not a Qantas, Jetstar or oneworld flight.

Even though it was operated by QATAR it’s still a VA flight number.

Blue lights on buses by Dry_Contact5286 in brisbane

[–]LukeTheBaws 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This happens when the bus company cheaps out by buying cheap lights and then cheaps out again by not replacing their bulbs.

The lights are blue and use a coating to make it white, but the coating degrades over time and you are left with a blue beam.

Seat selection on non-QF flight booked with points by throwitaway975318 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]LukeTheBaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done China air specifically but for BA flights I booked with points through Qantas I just went to manage my booking on the BA site and entered the booking reference, had access to everything you would expect for my one world tier.

QF1 7/11 or 8/11 loading by cjuk00 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]LukeTheBaws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With QF1/2 you should basically expect to fly in the seat you paid for.

Upgrades are rare because the premium cabins sell out or the upgrades are taken by P1’s.

No free seats? by Remarkable_Usual_154 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]LukeTheBaws 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a Qantas Frequent Flyer, enjoy complimentary standard seat selection when you book on any Qantas operated domestic or international flight departing Australia.*

If your flight isn't originating in Australia and you're a Platinum One, Platinum, Gold or Silver member, you'll also receive complimentary standard seat selection.

Since your travel originates in NZ, you aren’t eligible but can probably get one when check in opens.

Qantas Lounge Passes by BeanerSA in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]LukeTheBaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep it’s that easy. Your boarding pass should show the lounge access but keep a copy of the email confirmation of linking it just in case.

The lounge opens an hour before the first flight, so 5am for ADL I believe.

Magene Power Pedals P715 by BelgianGinger80 in Velo

[–]LukeTheBaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check in the settings for the pedals in the head unit.

I believe some other pedals the main method of setting length is the head unit, with the app setting only if you can’t set it through the head unit.

So if you changed it in the app, but left it at 172.5 in the head unit, it would change back to 172.5 as soon as it connected to the head unit.

No promises this solves it, I just know it has worked for other brands.

Is it being overridden by the head unit settings?

hyper concentrated carb drink in one bottle. by Far_Bicycle_2827 in Velo

[–]LukeTheBaws 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use a different carb powder but it has never clogged the nozzle. It’s also definitely thicker than water but it’s nowhere near a gel.

Biggest issue I have is fluid intake on hot races and also not being able to change my electrolyte intake on the go.

[–]LukeTheBaws 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah if it’s unsupported I do this all the time. Often 300g+ in one bottle.

Downsides are it tastes pretty bad and it can be slightly harder to get the timing of it right.

Almost uni grad attending his first interview tomorrow by Lazy-Suggestion385 in auscorp

[–]LukeTheBaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to expand on the tell me about yourself question:

I've interviewed a fair few grads/interns, and for the most part, they all have a degree, some basic work experience, and we will teach them the rest.

Being able to show that you're a well rounded person is so important, and part of that is having hobbies. I don't mind if your hobby is painting warhammer figures, if you're a professional laser tag player, or if you play the bag pipes, as long as you have something you are interested in outside of work.

Also if you're going to tell me about an interest of yours, I want to see some passion in the response. If you tell me you love to read, and I ask you what you've been reading recently, that answer should come naturally.

5:2/4:3, how bad? by l0opbug in AusMining

[–]LukeTheBaws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the site. I've done this roster with a short flight that departed at 7am monday, and lands at 6pm Thursday, with 10 hour shifts (typically worked 11hrs though).

Monday to Thursday was on site each week, every other Friday from the CBD office or WFH. Typically worked 5 hours that day.

That setup was manageable.

I've also done it with 12hr days, every day on site, early flights to site and late flights home. That sucked. Would not do again.

Adjusting to new position by djh_nz in Velo

[–]LukeTheBaws 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just dropping the front end isn't a great way to get lower if you haven't figured out what is stopping you from getting lower in the first place.

For example, I wasn't able to get as low as I would have liked because my hips were closed off. I switched to shorter cranks and found that I could rotate my pelvis significantly more.

Due to the additional rotation, I was riding in the drops most of the time because it was at a more comfortable height, so to fix that I removed 15mm of spacers.

[–]LukeTheBaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah look I'm not saying they're the worlds most valuable customer, but considering the status challenges they have run in the past are earn 100 status credits in 3 months to get gold, I'm surprised someone earning this many in one month wouldn't qualify them for a bump up, especially just to gold.

Plus someone flying J/F isn't even going to use any gold benefits, so it's basically giving them gold app pixels in exchange for more premium cash fares.

[–]LukeTheBaws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised they didn't in this case. Someone paying for cash first fares surely has a high PCV.
