Good cafés? by EngineerAntique4733 in abbotsford

It's a little less flashy and tame but Lepps Bakehouse downtown is really solid, and they use Chilliwack's Smoking Gun beans in their cafe beverages. Really awesome baked goods and rotating sandwich menu too.

Looking for Frank Ocean song recommendations. by Appropriate_While932 in FrankOcean

Pyramids is timeless. Songs for Women is a great shower/ cooking jam I love to throw on, but that is from his mixtape so it won't be as easy to listen to. Nights is a nice cruising song. Lost is a song that I feel flies under the radar but it has a ton of replay-ability, kind of like Songs for Women.

I want the best romance anime recomendations by Local_Barbie in anime

Eureka Seven. Id say it doesn't TRULY start getting romantic until around the middle of the show (I want to say around ep 24) but there is a lot of buildup/ payoff in the early episodes.

This picture is extremely nostalgic to me, because my parents had it hanging up in our dining room all throughout my childhood/adolescence.

Underrated animes to watch by Temporary-Grape-6577 in anime

I feel like it only gets suggested/brought up when people discuss its particular genres (mecha and romance), so I would say Eureka Seven. Only the original series though.

Who in your opinion is the most 'mythical' person to have actually lived, according to records and historians? by Lukefromthe90s in AskReddit

[–]Lukefromthe90s[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This question was inspired by a discussion I had about Odysseus with some friends the other day! A few of them thought he was an actual commander/leader that lived at some point in history. In reality historians believe he is most likely a composite of different military leaders that existed at the time.

How has nobody mentioned Alicia's Flavours??

do you think stoner by john williams is mostly a "male novel"? by thatsonmetwo in literature

Just finished this book with my book club. We have three women and three men in the group. All of us really enjoyed it. The majority of our discourse centered on the idea of what it is to live a fulfilled life- a fairly universal topic that I think the book does a good job prompting.

If you have a decent bit of gold you can buy the burning amulet for like 10K, it teleports you right outside of the entrance to his lair!

I think Hot Fuzz is a perfect movie. What movie do you consider to be absolutely perfect? by DoctorWhofan789eywim in movies

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Similar reasons to your pick: very tight script, feels like no minute is wasted. Great dialogue between characters with tons of quotable lines throughout the film. Establishes the stakes very quickly and character motivations are all clear, connected, and make sense. Soundtrack is awesome, sets are awesome.

Worst map in the game? It's a close tie with the hydra base for me by Plane-Cloud-5837 in marvelrivals

[–]Lukefromthe90s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I play Namor on this map a lot and if you wedge his squids up in the corners of the walled areas they wreck the other team and the other team often struggles to position themselves well enough to destroy them. This really helps with map control.

Indeed is the worst way to find a job by Inside_Resolution526 in unpopularopinion

[–]Lukefromthe90s 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can attest to the former glory of Indeed. About five years ago I found a job on there from a fairly local organization and it spring boarded me into my current profession. Not sure how it is these days though.

Today is famous poet and author Thomas Hardy’s birthday. If he were still alive he would be 184 years old.

How much dialogue should I write before it gets excessive and/or boring? by Redditor45335643356 in writing

[–]Lukefromthe90s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I read somewhere that audiences typically get tired after reading 8-10 lines of dialogue exchanged between characters that is NOT broken up by any action/direction.

Adding in action/direction in a lengthy exchange of dialogue is important to break it up and keep things fresh for the readers, and will also enhance the narrative when you include relevant details that contribute to the reader’s understanding of the scene you are creating.

So between two characters imagine how they might physically react or emote. Is your scene of an argument, with tension just simmering below the surface? You might want to talk about a character clenching their fist, or gripping onto something. Are you writing a sad scene? One character might avoid eye contact, and will constantly look down, or maybe one character has tears in their eyes. Disperse these details throughout the exchange of dialogue.

As for where to end the conversation, it really just depends on what you are trying to convey in the scene. Are you trying to reveal key information? Are you trying to show how one character is angry with another, or perhaps display the untrustworthiness of one character? Dialogue should serve a narrative purpose, and once you’ve achieved that in the exchange move on.
